  • In this series I repair and then review the Cobra CPI2575 2500W/5000W 12V to 120V power inverter. This is a common and popular inverter. Is it a good inverter or just an inverter with a good profit margin? In this series I find out if this inverter is a keeper or one to pass on.

    Well this test explains my prior failures with same inverter. Fortunately, my Cobra now sits on back bench, reserved only for light camping duties. Great job dissecting this inverter.

    Sad but expected, Cobra like so many once trusted Brands are now complete junk. Based on your channel I recently purchased a 1000 watt Xantrex Xpower and I am so pleased with what I received for my hard earned buck. It's rated surge at 2000 I calculated was much closer to 2200. Thanks for your channel my friend I have enjoyed it very much!

      No Comparison at all actually :) I found a refurb on EBay for the inverter, so only 35 bucks free shipping. Arrived as new, I was stoked :). Still gotta find a deal on a Pure Sign, thinking Samlex/Go or whatever looks promising. Really only need about 500 watts there. Take care!

    The instructions say use double cables for the 2500 watt range.

      That right because how he has it set up it’s only pulling half of what it can do with one set of cables.

    • @user-mt4zr5kp7h
      @user-mt4zr5kp7h 3 года назад +1

      Not exactly. If you saw the previous videos you'd see the heavy connection inside, off of the lugs that tie the 2 connectors together. Because his cables are so short, and he's using larger cables than what it says to use, it's just fine doing what he's doing. The reason it doesn't do what it's supposed to is because it's junk. The guy is an engineer. I'm sure he knows what he's doing.
      The internals of this device are and never were designed to run 2500 watts. 4 mosfets are not enough for that kind of power. My 3kw has 12 fets, for example.
      It also only has 2 transformers, where, at 2500w it should have at least 3. A good one would have at least 4.
      Anyone who's purchased more than a couple inverters over the years would take one look at the insides of this thing and laugh when it says 2500 watts. Even just at first glance. It's too freakin small!

    In the days, Cobra were one of the top notch brand in 1980's. As Cobra has out resource to China, 'then what?' Even new Cobra CB radio really has gone down hill, as the price has dropped too.

    I have never really liked that cobra 2500w inverter thanks for conferming this, I ran a similar test on my Eliminator 3000w and got 2800w out of it and my cabling was not enough for 300Amps

  • @flyingflapjack5133
    @flyingflapjack5133 4 года назад

    I have put 3000 watt load with no beeping. I also have two #4 wires feeding power. My thought is 12 volt batteries have a tuff time feeding that amount of power, and it needs more batteries I mean a lot of batteries rather than 1 or 2 big batteries. And then the extra 2 wires really help. I do like your testing setup though.

  • @HellBoundWizard

    Yeah, that's what I thought; 1500W. I can't remember the internals but I think it might be possible to reverse the two fans in the rear by flipping them over so they blow inward.

    Hello I buy a 2500 cobra inverter I conectes on a big rig but the problem is that has a green light that shows the battery bolts and if I conect a microwave light start blinking in red light goin down and microwave it’s only 700

    • @knurlgnar24
      @knurlgnar24  4 года назад +1

      This sounds like inadequate batteries or cabling. Your microwave will likely draw about 100A from the batteries so something like 0AWG cable or heavier would be best. This inverter will also require at least 200Ah of batteries to perform up to its rating.

    Do I need to put some kinda fuse on this? Also have solar panels coming into the batteries. Thanks

    • @knurlgnar24
      @knurlgnar24  2 года назад

      While electrical best-practices and codes will say otherwise I contend that no fuse is necessary on inverter inputs on this type of unit and I never use them. The inverter is internally fused and if that fails for some reason any additional failure internal to the inverter will open traces on the circuit board and outright turn the conducting path it into smoke and then open. My main thing regardless of fusing or not is to make sure the inverter is not in contact with any combustible materials. If it fails a plastic cased inverter like this could ignite in a worst case scenario. With the fire retardants they put in plastics it won't burn vigorously but it can still cause a fire.

    I have an inverter exactly the same, it’s all hooked up and it shows input voltage, but no out put. I hooked up a 700watt microwave and it looks like it’s too much for the inverter.. any recommendations!?

    • @knurlgnar24
      @knurlgnar24  3 года назад

      What battery and cable setup are you using? A 700W microwave will draw about 1000W and require around 100A from the battery so a typical car battery will be marginal. Also cabling should be 4AWG or better and fairly short. Not sure your setup, just a few ideas.

  • @Xboomer1
    @Xboomer1 8 лет назад +1

    I am wondering if there was ANY difference when you hooked up ANOTHER SET OF CABLES to the other cable posts on the inverter.....thus more power connection.
    I do notice that you have it hardwired to the batteries, so that should give maximum connection. And I am sure you are correct about the inverter....I am wondering if it got MIS-LABELED at the factory, and just did not get caught.

    • @knurlgnar24

      Both positive and both negative terminals are connected internally so you do not have to use all 4 for lighter loads, but all 4 are should be used to avoid cable and connection heating if you want to run at high loads for extended periods of time.

    I have the same inverter. Is it worth to repair and who would repair such a thing

    • @knurlgnar24
      @knurlgnar24  3 года назад

      No commercial entity will repair such a product for a cost that makes sense to repair it. That said if you yourself or someone you know is interested in giving it a go it is highly likely that you can repair it for only a few 10's of dollars - maybe less. Yes, I'd say definitely worth it as a hobby activity if you're into that sort of thing. It's the time and risk of non-repairability that makes repair a commercial no-go. If you just want to get rid of it and not throw it away sell it on eBay as broken. You'll probably get a good $40 or so out of it.

    • @knurlgnar24
      @knurlgnar24  10 лет назад

      If those inverters do what you need then that's great, but if you are considering purchasing another inverter I would recommend a different product. E.g. The older Cobra inverters that come in metal cases are much better than the newer ones in plastic like shown here.

    • @kevin1201ful

      ***** Hi! I installed a Missouri Wind Turbine with a converter from DC to AC connected to a charge controller and a dump load (the latter still not connected). The charge controller is connected to a six-battery bank and from it to two power inverters (Cobra 2500) and the inverters the main breaker. The inverter output is only 95V each. I saw in your video that the output of the inverte was 110V What am I doing wrong?

      most likely you are using a non true RMS multimeter which does not accurately read the voltage. These inexpensive inverters are not phase corrected and can read grossly incorrectly with non-RMS meters. A true RMS multimeter should read the proper voltage.

    • @mickeylewis8094
      @mickeylewis8094 3 года назад

      @@knurlgnar24 that's because the inverter is not a true sine wave inverter so the other half of the voltage is on the neutral wire especially with the 2500 watts ones from Cobra.

      +ken ber If you want a good, inexpensive 1500 watt Pure Sine Wave inverter, go to Amazon or Ebay, and look at the OSP Tiger Claw....mine has been running for 1 1/2 years, no problems...look at RUclips Videos and Knurlgnar's review, and comparisons... price...$199 US dollars...you might need a .01 micro farad Capacitor to put on the negative terminal to the ground screw, that is to help the fans run properly. Other than that, I had no issues.
      I run my 850 watt power consumption Microwave Oven on it. I don't think it can be beat for the price. Also...STAY AWAY FROM ACCURATE TOOLS INVERTERS....see the review on those...badly built.
      Hope that helps.
      It also depends on what you want to RUN...I did 1 full year of RESEARCH on the internet before even BUYING an inverter....I learned about Batteries, Cables, FUSES...Solar Panels, and of course inverters.... Best suggestion, go get an education...it is not all that complicated, though time consuming...:-) Then build a small system like I did....

    • @MrKenberk
      @MrKenberk 8 лет назад

      I've been doing tons of research for months. My inverter is the last component I need to buy. Ive been running everything off of a Cobra cpi850 but need something bigger/better quality that is a pure sine wave. I've been in eBay for ever. So many dam inverters to pick one. I think I'll just have to close my eyes and pick one.
