      The barnacles should be released by submersion in fresh water, to avoid damaging the sensitive shell structure.

    Barnacles can hurt the turtles. They can get on the nose and mouth and cause the turtle breathing problems, and if the turtle gets to many they can make it difficult for the turtle to swim!

  • @treehouse2902
    @treehouse2902 6 лет назад +3

    I don't know what their shells are made of but in removing the barnacles, there are holes left on the shelf. It would seem to me that makes the turtle vulnerable to things getting into the holes and causing infection. It's great to remove those parasites but is there something, some salve used to cover the holes. Just wondering.

    Does removing them from the shell not leave the shell exposed? It looks as if open pockets are left where the barnacles attached. Could this not cause infection and, in itself, cause drag from the water?

    • @darksidelead
      @darksidelead 6 лет назад +6

      The shell is meant to be "exposed" Its a shell, protection for the turtle. Its made of Keratin, the same stuff your hair, finger nails and hooves, claws etc. are made of. The "open pockets" is just slight cosmetic damage with the "barnacle glue" compared to the actual barnacles that weight down and drag the turtle.

    believe me sir, he wants them off. they burrow into the shell & probably cause an itchy sensation, besides weighing them down when they get so many, they cause bacterial infections also. always help turtles by removing them or bringing them somewhere they can do it.

    • @darksidelead
      @darksidelead 6 лет назад

      They don't itch tho. The shell is made of Keratin, the same stuff your hair and finger nails are made of. There are no living nerve cells in the shell.

    Barnacles add drag and as they get bigger they have a harder time moving..
    Barnacles can hook fish lines and other ropes and then need I say more.. It kills them.. Or if there lucky, someone will see them and remove the net, rope and fish line.. So it all started with just Barnacles...

    Do the barnacles harm the turtles shell or cause it pain ???

    • @tnoi

      A G once they get many it will be heavy for the turtle. some stick to airways too.

    • @remasteredgaming1411
      @remasteredgaming1411 7 лет назад +29

      A G it's commensalism for the most par which means that the barnacles benefit from being on the turtle while the turtle doesn't get anything out of it and is not harmed

    I thought barnacles are harmless? Are you removing them because they are parasitic?

    • @eehrkamp82
      @eehrkamp82 8 лет назад +40

      Mikhaila L they take them off because it creates drag force on the turtle, causing them to have to exert more energy to swim. Energy they need to find food with.

    • @freddykrueger5503
      @freddykrueger5503 8 лет назад +5

      Freddy Krueger they are dead now so none

    • @thangvuong9196
      @thangvuong9196 7 лет назад +33

      Mikhaila L Barnacles are not parasites but they do cause tremendous harm to the turtle when there is an infestation. The barnacles not only grow on the shell, but on the flippers, face, and belly, sometimes causing tremendous weight gain and drag in the water which reduces the turtles ability to dive and swim efficiently.

    Those hitchhiking barnacles are not parasites. They don't affect the turtle in the slightest and removing it would just stress the animal. Please don't disturb the nature and just leave it be.

    But he is not helping the turtle by removing the barnacles this way! His actions could be causing the turtle significant pain and may lead to severe infections or even death. Placing the turtle in fresh water would cause the barnacles to fall off within two days. Sea turtles can withstand fresh water for up to six days, while barnacles can only survive for a maximum of two days before they perish and detach.
