      The game is way way too similar to BOTW. I’m in disbelief that everyone seems to have amnesia and is not mentioning that it still has awful pacing. Awful cutscenes from the past AGAIN. The same music. The same bad guys. The same shrines. The same towns. The same stables.

    This game is a freakin masterpiece. I have been playing games little over 32 years and not many games grab my attention these days. I am literally glued to my Switch. This game is so polished and managed to exceed all my expectations. It dethroned even OOT for me. I feel like BOTW and TOTK are like the best possible remake of Ocarina of Time. Normally I don’t even do all side quests and with this game I wanna do everything and don’t want it to end. After like 150h with this game I can honestly say this just became my most favorite game of all time! Phenomenal gameplay which gives me Dark Chronicle 2 vibes. It surpasses every game in the series, great story that super deep. Each culture well realized, everything interconnected. Mere words can’t describe this game. I got bored with some most anticipated games this year-like GOW Ragnarok and RE4R-great games, but these games didn’t really do much novelty except for looking great. But Zelda TOTK blows everything miles away. This game feels more next gen to me than anything on PlayStation I have played. The world-depths, sky, weather, story, gameplay, characters, art style, crafting,…. This is a symphony, a masterfully crafted gaming poetry! This is the new standard for new gen gaming and finally we get a polished game( while there is some pop-in, but well aging hardware) but this is almost flawless game! If this was the last game I play in my life-I would feel happy! While playing this game, I have zero desire to play anything else! Absolute Masterclass of a game that deserves 99/100. The 1% is for minor issues.

    It's the npcs that elevate this game so much for me. I love that we get to involve ourselves so much with the towns and all the little side stories of these characters. As serene as botw was, it's so lonely sometimes! Do agree on the combat as well; the reach of some weapons, link's "dodge" capabilities outside of flurry, fumbling with menus mid combat - not a deal breaker, but it does detract a bit.

  • @samwoodley1653
    @samwoodley1653 Год назад +9

    For weapon durability, I think if there was none we'd just find the weapons we liked very early on (you have so much variety and opportunely to get good stuff early) that by not even the 10 hour mark we'd have our "end game" gear.
    That means aside from getting the horns from the few stronger enemies you've yet to kill, you'd just use the same stuff for dozens upon dozens of hours.
    With weapons breaking, you're constantly on the lookout for gear to fill in gaps. You'll find more two handed weapons which make you fight differently. You'll get to fuse new items to stuff you find. Fighting enemies and exploring has an opportunity for you to find cool stuff. And then it still fits the theme of this Hyrule being overgrown and wild, where arms and armour aren't sold by blacksmiths in every town everywhere.

    • @haxx1707
      @haxx1707 Год назад

      Tbh if they really wanted to make people use other weapons for variety I wish they just made weapons have unique attack animations instead of durability and when you start fusing stuff on it the animations would change accordingly but I guess that's too much work so it's easier to just go with the durability system.

    • @samwoodley1653
      @samwoodley1653 Год назад

      @@haxx1707 the problem with that is you'd still eventually land on your favorite and it's all you'd ever use. You'd have a weapon for every situation all the time and you wouldn't need to look for new gear once you had them.

  • @paulharries696

    Botw was a living breathing world you could escape to and adventure in, and in my opinion Tofk just amps that up even more. I think the new powers and returning weapon durability work well to encourage you to vary your approach to combat much more (especially being able to fuse items to weapons & shields, and attach anything you want to arrows). In Botw I mainly stuck with a few favourite techniques in combat but I find I'm varying it much more in this game. The hours I've spent playing this game so far have given me some of the most intense, exhilarating and enjoyable gaming moments I've ever had (plucking a star fragment out of the sky whilst skydiving? That was a joyous moment!). And such a strong sense of place! And a better story. And so many small quality of life improvements...

    I agree about the voice acting, but what bugs me the most about the VA is that characters WITH voice actors will sometimes have lines they voice and then other times you have to read what they say instead and they just make grunting noises or something. The same scene can have a line with a VA voicing their character then the very next line from them they say nothing and you have to read it. It’s like they randomly decided when they wanted a character to actually speak or not. It feels so outdated for where we are in gaming these days. That’s really my only major complaint with the game.

Apparently, in the original Japanese text, Link actually talks/gives his own opinion via quest diaries in BOTW. But in other translations, these entries are given the second person narrative. And unfortunately, I'm sure this is probabaly going to be the same case in ToTK :/

    As a BOTW hater I gotta say the durability system is way better here. Just the fact that you can fuse with monster parts makes it a non-issue, if you're weapon breaks just slap another lizalfos horn on another stick and you're good to go. And now you actually have a reason to fight monsters late game. In BOTW I was actively avoiding them to not waste my weapons. Also I don't understand how the new Temples are anything like Divine Beasts. The Divine Beasts had the same enemies, same aesthetic, and same final boss, it was trash. These definitely felt more like traditional dungeons which I really appreciate, and they all had a unique style as well as unique mechanics. I'm happy that they actually thought about what didn't work in BOTW and improved it here. I was worried that since it sold so well, they would just copy paste the formula.

    The world definitely feels more lived in , it's expanded itself from the last game and I love that.
    I love the underdark, it was a complete surprise!
    The durability can also be expanded based off of what you fuse together. There are some combos that will last far longer than others.
    Silent Link is intentional and will probably always be so... they've stated multiple times that Link is to have your own voice and they feel that giving him one will take that away from the players. Who knows if they'll ever change their mind there though.

    One thing not mentioned really here is the removal of the bomb ability from botw. I think it's really important to mention, as it actually substantially changes the gameplay. I relied so much on using the bomb ability as weapons in botw that I came to rely on them for so much. Attacking enemies, breaking ore deposits, killing wildlife to easily farm meat/food items, chop down trees, etc. Them removing the bomb ability forced me to actually approach all of those scenarios in ways you probably should have in botw and I find myself enjoying the weapons and gameplay so much more now as a result. I personally also really love the weapon degradation especially this time around since as long as you keep something fused to all your weapons, the durability is increased to last a lot longer, not to mention it will always increase the damage output it's kind of a dumb move to not use fused weapons. Not to mention the sheer level of creativity you have with making fused weapons!

    G’day guys, I’ve just discovered your channel. I’ve never played Zelda before and I’m very much a beginner gamer . I’m 54yo and recently bought a switch OLED. I agree re Link not speaking. It’s 2023! Give him a voice or at least give the player the option to turn his voice on or off if you really are that nostalgic. It’s been a steep learning curve for me but I’m really enjoying the game. To me, some of the rewards are a tad mediocre (chests etc). You work quite hard for some of them and you crack it open to get an old broken stick or an arrow? 😂If you’re lucky, you might get 5 arrows. Maybe I’m more used to other games (WOW and Elder Scrolls etc) where the rewards seem a bit more substantial depending on how hard it was to discover or reach. Also the weapons don’t seem to last very long compared to the few games I’ve played before which I find a bit annoying. Finally, the way you can’t organise your ingredients, stuff you pick up, things you can attach to arrows etc into groups and organise them like other games is annoying to me. Having to scroll through a huge long list to find something (especially when in a battle) is irritating to me. Maybe I’m just old and cranky 😂To get a game like this to run so we’ll on what is essentially a 6yo tablet is incredible. Keep up the great work! Craig - Australia

    Great review!!! I wanted permanence in weapons for the sequel but early on I discovered why it might not work.
    I was in the depths with 5 hearts and completed an area that gave me two chests one of which had a 40+ damage weapon that was also sturdy. I killed so many tough enemies with it (life saving super sword). For my level it would break the game if I was allowed to keep it.
    In Soulsborne games you must meet the requirements to wield a weapon and then find smithing stones to upgrade. It takes significant quests in Elden Ring to fully max a weapon. Tears allows you to wield anything at anytime but only for a limited time. It’s a fair ‘break’ pun intended.
    Edit: I’m only 35hrs in and haven’t even beat a temple yet. I would like endgame permanence/repair to fav weapons…blacksmiths that could do so is fair kinda like the special build function (no spoilers) you can get through a quest.

I think fusing a rock/rubble etc. really ups the durability on the weapon, and one of my new favs is fusing the iron spike ball 😁. It packs a PUNCH! Love exploring the depths too, it is always a challenge. Will be playing this one for awhile, I can’t even argue about the price. I very much understand the complaints about weapon degredation in BOTW, but IMO the way weapons work in TOTK the breakable weapons both make sense and are totaly fine... When a weapon I like breaks in this game, I almost always have on hand the bits I need to make another similar weapon, even if the end result stats aren`t quite the same... I still would`ve prefered that the weapons, shields, and bows lasted longer, though...

There’s never a shortage of fusion materials so you can always make a new equally powerful weapon as soon as the old one breaks. They both leave sour notes with me. Given you can get the physical cheaper, I don't agree with your 20 for value. Yes, it's a very good game but still full of flaws. I would have gone 19, cause value for money could have been improved (ie cheaper, better framerates, combat systems, odd voice-over choices etc)... as usual great review. Combat is actually very complex and has a huge skill ceiling with the environment and tools. There are players engaging it as a sandbbox with shield surfing + time bombs + bows, recall and ultrahand, parries and cancels (just look at the expamples postead daily). If someone just locks on into the enemy, swings until the weapon breaks, and repeats the process as long as the enemy endures, of course it would look not polished enough, even dull.

Value: being the highest priced base game out there in digital form at $70, i find the value a little overscored. Performance: just basing it off if other titles, if there were framerate drops from 30 to 20, that score would be hit a little harder in my opinion. Thats my personal take and, granted, i have not even played the first one yet so take it as you will. Still i think its a great title, one of those must plays on the Switch and a true classic in the Zelda franchise!!!
