Already Getting Boring?? Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

  • The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has been out for a few weeks now and people are really digging into it. While some of the highlights in videos involve duplication glitches and cool stuff that’s getting built, the simple fact of the matter is that a large portion of the game is slowly moving around, climbing up mountains, and doing boring stuff. Even the side quests can be rather dull at times. In this video, I address these concerns that people may have that I’ve seen spread on Reddit and go over my own thoughts, what I’ve found dull, where I think there should be quality of life improvements, and then what I’ve really been enjoying from the game.

I heard that they originally made many more sky islands but they were told to remove most of them since it filled too much space in the sky, this is probably why there are islands in the trailers that are impossible to find in the game
But the skies should’ve had much more content to justify the heavy marketing they placed on it, also I would’ve preferred for the depths to be smaller but have much more content and have original rewards (I’m looking at you amiibo chests) I think Totk would’ve had much more of it’s own personality if they focused more on the skies and the depths rather than just focusing on the ultrahand stuff

At first I was obsessed with the game. I was playing for over 8 hours a day barely sleeping, just glued to the game for one week straight. It seems that “high” went away as soon as I started feeling the hollowness behind grinding for items that will almost be obsolete to beat the main story line. Most of my time playing the first week was spent doing side quests, finding shrines, and exploring. Again, it was fun at first. But after grinding for clothes and items, and continued to the main story, I realized I didn’t need half the things I spent to much time getting to beat bosses etc. I can’t quite explain this, but everything in Hyrule feels redundant. I think balance is key to everything, and this game lacks it, I was already reaching areas I wasn’t supposed to be at till I progressed story-wise, that too is weird. There should be consequences to reaching areas your character isn’t ready for, there should’ve been a more complex mechanic and purpose behind farming items that would become valuable or play an important role in beating the game. In conclusion I feel that the size of the game doesn’t = a good game by any means, it’s a huge world with what feels like two different concepts, concept 1. Beat the main story line, concept 2. Waste your time farming things for no reason and complete side quests that have no effect on the main story. Had they made it so that a majority of side quests and exploration had a direct effect on the outcome of the main story line then I would’ve been impressed.

    • @r.torres5991
      @r.torres5991 Год назад +11

Another observation was that after farming and wasting so much time, I realized I had no more time left to be doing this. So I started using glitches for weapons and shields and other items, and now I understand why the devs make weapons break. We all know they want to encourage exploration through weaponry breakage, but it’s pretty sad that after using minimal exploits the entirety of the game fell apart and felt pointless. I get that the purpose is to work your way to things, but at the same time I feel like if duping weapons makes the entirety of the game and the excitement fall apart, that there must be a huge missing piece that’s making this game not as advanced and as amazing as it could’ve been. Their attempts at forcing you to explore by making your weapons break is too cheap of a tactic with lazy outcomes.

This game has some very tedious things in it. If you have gathered a lot of Korok seeds and you want to expand your inventory slots, you cannot do it all at once. You need to expanded the inventory slot 1 at a time and you need to skip the stupid dance all the time.
If you take out a horse at the stable, you constantly need to skip the same text boxes of information I already heard 10 million times before.
The sign guy is constantly saying the same thing every time you meet him at a different spot. If you build something that you know will hold the sign, he still is afraid it will fall and you need to speak to him a couple of times before he agrees that it's stable. After he secured the sign, he is saying the same thing, gives you an item, says the same thing, gives you another items, is saying something again and gives you the third item. There is no way to just close it immediately and get the items directly. It's super slow en tedious.
Don't get me started on the same text that pops up at the beginning of each shrines. It's a pain in the ass to skip. If you finish a shrine, you get the same shit again.
I'm also really sick of the same shit the Korok that wants to be with his friend is telling me. I'm constantly skipping the same text boxes.
The problem with this game is that it is constantly slowing me down and is nagging me with tedious things. I have know idea why they designed it this way. Why is a lot of stuff you do in this game so cumbersome? The game isn't feeling snappy at all.

At one point I had spent like eight hours in the depths and felt like it was such a crappy balance of tedious and hard vs reward, but then I spent five minutes on a sky island and found many items I was starving for in the depths (like sundelions) and I realized that Nintendo didn’t want me to spend eight hours in one place but to bounce around a little bit more. I realized about thirty hours in that I was completely missing the cadence of the gameplay. Basically in BOTW you just cruise around, and along the way you’ll find everything you need, sometimes you’ll have to stop and cook and even less frequently you’ll want to stop to trade in your orbs or whatever for hearts/stamina. In TOTK if you wander on foot for too long you’ll find yourself sorely missing assets found above or below, and in addition to prepping some meals and trading in orbs for hearts/stamina you’re setting aside a moment in a safe place to build vehicles and weapons, and then you remember you also need to go trade in those blue pyramid things for longer battery life, and when you miss the beat with any of these things you’re smacked in the face with some boring, tedious, and/or hard. In fact due to this sort of massive pendulum swing between prepping and adventuring, I’ve started reserving certain tasks for specific IRL instances- if I have ten minutes to play while I’m at work I’m mindlessly collecting mushrooms and fish, if I have an hour to play I’ll enter some shrines or explore some side quests, but when I get the rare window to play for hours on end I go back to the main quest. First couple of hours were fun ngl, but I just couldn't bring myself to finish the game. It's EXACTLY like botw. I'm around 45 hours in, and ppl denying it are just coping hard.
I absolutely loved botw, don't get me wrong - probably one the best games I've ever played, but this game is exactly the same, disguised as a new game under Minecraft mechanics.
The overworld is exactly the same (with some additional rocks thrown here and there to make it look "different"), the skylands are a copy pasta disappointment, and the underground is just a dark vacant barren joke. The Legacy Dungeons are literally Divine Beasts, and not Zelda Dungeons. We got the same old koroks and tiresome shrines. Building sucks (personal preference - if you like building simulators you'll love it, otherwise you'd hate it. Personally I hate Minecraft). The caves are boring and copy pasted too.
I just can't finish the game. I don't get how it took them 6 years to create this game when they alrdy had the vast majority of the physics engine done. I don't know why it costs 70$ if it's the literal same game.
This game is 100% a DLC

The game gives you nothing. You can create hoverboards and flying mini fortresses? For what? The shit you do has no world building consequences. It means nothing to the actual game. As linear and tightly spaced games like Ocarina of Time may appear, there was purpose to anything you did. You were experiencing an actual plot. Everything in the game was part of it. This may be a hot take, but Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom prove that Zelda shouldn't have gone open world. The developers clearly don't know how to fill that world with interesting content. There's only so many breakable weapons, one-off shrines and koroks you can discover before thinking "what's the point". This game is my first Zelda game and it mentally drains me. I can’t play it for more than an hour before getting bored or frustrated. I’m only 15 hours in and I understand a lot of people love the game but I just don’t like it. I feel like I need to restart my progress because of all the mechanics thrown at me that I’m brand new to and not good at.
Also the combat system is horrible. It has to be one of the worst combat systems in any game that I have ever played. Controls are extremely clunky and equipment breaks very fast. A sword should last me more than just eight or so hits before it breaks. Now I understand I’m supposed to merge other objects onto the swords but what items do what? And what’s the point? There’s no point to make a good weapon if it’s just going to break after five minutes.
The map is also very hostile. I’m finding it difficult to progress because of all the random boss fights and enemies I encounter. I find it extremely frustrating. I know I’m supposed to complete shrines to make myself stronger but that just leads me into my next point.
I’ve probably done 15 shrines and all of them have sucked. They’re boring and feel repetitive. I don’t want to do them. I’ve heard people talk about the shrines and how they like them, but they killed the game for me.
I hope I’m not the only one who feels this way.

If you have the online membership, I would suggest you look at one of the retro games to play. Most would suggest Link to the Past or Ocarina of Time, since they're franchise pillars, but I highly recomend the Minish Cap for GBA. It's a 2D style one, and shorter but it's a really charming adventure. And if you don't click with it, it doesn't drag on, and the story is more standalone than most so you don't have to worry about going deeper into the lore if you don't want to, even though it does bring in a lot of common concepts. But it's a great option since it's a nice balance of older charm and newer quality of life additions.

I'm supposed to love Tears of the Kingdom. Then you see how much everyone else is enjoying it and you start to doubt yourself. I'm just finding it boring and frustrating. This video makes a fair point. I'm nearly 20 hours in and I've only just arrived at the Wind Temple, so maybe I've spent too much time doing shrines. But having got to the Wind Temple, my overriding feeling is just, "is this it?". I'd heard that dungeons were back and this first one is just so underwhelming. I'm also finding the ultrahand and fuse mechanics really frustrating. I was worried when I watched the build-a-boat trailer because I knew I wouldn't be into it. I've also died far more often than in any other Zelda game, outside of the NES titles. I feel like nearly 20 hours in and all my gear is still garbage. If this wasn't a Zelda game I think I'd be dropping it. I'm going to at least finish the Wind Temple but I don't feel like I have the motivation to journey across to the next one because it feels like it's going to be another 10 hours of drudgery. I could rush through the entirety of Link to the Past in that time and have a brilliant time. I think that also comes back to one of the points in the video. I'm older now with a child, some days I might squeeze in 30 minutes of gaming. I need to feel like I've achieved something in that time, or progressed the story. In TotK, those 30 minutes can easily be spent just travelling from point A to point B, without doing anything of note. I feel really down about it. So after 10,000 years of growing more and more powerful, what’s the damage on the master sword? …30. 🤦🏻‍♂️ It’s literally the same as BOTW, EXCEPT all the monsters are ramped up in damage and HP in this game, which means the master sword is actually LESS powerful than it was in BOTW. 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️ What the hell were they thinking?

I'm pretty much at end game but trying to level ups a couple armors and such. The whole game has just been a slog for me much like BOTW was which I didn't care for. TOTK to me is getting to the point of how I felt play AC Odyssey which I never finished since I looked at the map with all the stuff to do and just felt so overwhelmed I just quit. Adding the depths and the sky doesn't help things for me either with that feeling. I also don't really care for how open it is in from the very begining, I think your first play through they should give you more direction and make it so the story keeps moving and you don't see anything or get anything when your not supposed to. On a new game + thats when I think it should be do whatever you want from the very start.
I'll still finish it because it's Zelda but I'm just taking my time and playing it when I feel like it at this point.

I am a huge lifelong fan of Zelda. I have played every entry available to me. With that said, BotW and TotK are terrible Zelda games. They took everything that was amazing about previous Zelda titles in favor of some very mundane and boring sandbox elements. I feel like this game is a polished up minecraft clone with Zelda paint. Give me back a coherent and in order story, unique dungeons, bosses, and items. Get rid of these generic run of the mill shrines and bring back real heart container quest hunting. The weapon degradation, stamina bar, and weather effects are extremely annoying. The open world is not an issue at all, its the sandbox nature of it. It feels like 90% of the game is irrelevant, and just there to give you a lego box to play with.

50+ hours in: completing the memories was fun but caves and side quests are getting repetitive. The last trailer before release actually gave me a strange feeling, like more of a “look at all the silly and wacky stuff you can do!!” Rather than getting me excited for a mysterious, heroic, and grand adventure. I’m not the biggest Zelda fan but I have played and adored every mainline console game with TP being my favorite because I feel like they are very important entries in gaming period. BOTW was refreshing and very much needed, faults for sure but had no problem sinking over 100 hours into it, though it did get tiring but it was a blast. Got very concerned when it was confirmed the same Hyrule map would be reused and was hoping at least magically some traditional form of dungeons would return, but all this just looks the same.. like sort of a definitive expansion edition of BOTW. They seem to be dead set on keeping this as the mainline Zelda formula now and that is VERY concerning. Similar to the exhausting period the 2D Mario series went through with all the New Super entries.

I've been a Zelda fan my whole life. Back when BotW released, I was blown away. I always said to myself, "this is the pinnacle of Zelda." I never had so much fun in an open world before. Needless to say I was insanely hyped for TotK for 6 years since BotW released
Now, I've only been a Souls fan for about 3 years. I only had Dark Souls Remastered for a while before I got into the rest of the series. I played through Dark Souls 1-3, Bloodborne, and finally Elden Ring in the 6 months leading up to TotK release
It hurts me to say it but playing Elden Ring right before TotK really killed all hype I had for that game. The combat in TotK was EXTREMELY underwhelming in comparison. Like, it made me not want to fight anything. It was all just the same 3 rehashed attack animations from BotW. I didn't mind the weapon durability in BotW but it was made even worse in TotK by also losing fused monster parts unless you want to keep a bunch of half broken weapons in your inventory to take to Tarry Town. A whole underground area that looks the same everywhere and looks bland. There doesn't seem to be any point in actually exploring the Depths unless you're farming Zoanite for upgrading batteries. You get old maps that put an X on the map where a chest is. There's mines all over with constructs. But again, there's no exploring because the chests are pinned on your map and the mines are all under major locations on the surface
I thought the sky islands would be really cool after the tutorial on the Great Sky Island but no, the rest of them were really small and didn't have much to do on them besides the odd copy and paste flux costruct, or shrine crystal that you put on a flying vehicle and trivialize the quest. Sundelions are the only other reasons for going to the sky islands
I'm not biased towards Elden Ring at all. I know it has copy and paste catacombs and mines but at least there I get souls and upgrade materials for killing enemies while navigating my way through a labyrinth to find a cool boss at the end that can put up a challenge, all while getting spells, incantations, talismans, weapons, and armour for all different kinds of character builds
Don't get me wrong, I really had a lot of fun with TotK when it first came out but my God, did I get tired of playing pretty quick and went back to playing my Souls games and haven't looked back. They've literally changed the way I view games these days

It is remarkably boring. Of course, because it is a brazen, shameless repeat of BotW (a long game), the same world, the same endlessly tedious shrines, the same base game, the same weapons breaking, and not even the slightest acknowledgment of changes since one's last achievements or fulfilment of hopes for something new (like something more interesting than those unbelievably dull shrines). The story design is pure garbage and like a lazy parody of the last game, it couldn't be less motivating to do anything in this world. And if anything was slightly annoying in the last game, but excused somehow, it is sure to be very annoying now, when it is still the same. And everything is incredibly slow, which is not helped by it being a 200 hours repeat.
The fighting seems a bigger focus now, but this is a mistake, since the fighting feels awful and annoying. It is a completely unpleasant experience with nothing enjoyable about it whatsoever. (As there isn't about anything else.)
It is incredible what hype this game receives or what Nintendo gets away with here... One has to wonder if anyone even played BotW.
And there is overall a feeling of incredible smugness and pretentiousness or arrogance over delivering the whole thing like this. And based on the fighting alone, I would expect anyone who overlooks or somehow for the first time enjoys all the other stuff, and who is looking for a positive experience, to feel betrayed.

Honestly a simple fix for me would’ve been to expand the surface map outwards and start there after that initial landing from the Great Sky Island. have the main land of Hyrule Evacuated and cut off with all of its inhabitants fleeing to the outer regions due to an overabundance of gloom ( going to the areas around the map that’s not excessable in BOTW) as well as going to the Depths and/or Sky. Giving us an incentive to explore again and find our lost friends with new themed biomes possible returning Races like Deku, minish, etc. then after a certain point I’m the story we could retake hyrule and explore the TOTK map as well as the new areas

  • @Luizanimado
    @Luizanimado 10 месяцев назад +2

Man, Breath of the wild had some really cool things to find on the map, like the dragon on the mountain, or the terrey town mission, TOTK only has NPCs asking for stupid things, that's it, the only thing memorable on TOTK is the main missions, like the dungeons, and the Master Koga, there is nothing else to find that is cool or memorable, That's such a big disappointment.

I actually enjoy the Sky and Depths stuff. Its the constant slog for getting everything done. The build ability is supposed to be cool, but it took me like a week and a half to get the control stick. My friend got it in like 3 days, which was frustrating because the zonai devices are a pain to control. Then the fact the items come from the dispensers AT RANDOM is annoying. Good weapon fusions and worthwhile weapons and items aside from armor pieces break way too easily and are a pain to scavenge resources for, and like 99% of chests are a waste of time because they're just loaded with stupid consumables. Break weapons to get items to make weapons to replace broken weapons. You're now at a stalemate. The korok sequences are a drag sometimes, and there are some quests that are unnecessarily long (one particular quest takes like 4 hours). If they didn't patch the dupe glitch, the game would be a little more fun, since it's so hard to find star fragments and diamonds, which are needed...

I skipped all Koroks other then first 1 or 2 (I got the seeds I needed just from flipping rocks.)
Yeah I hate in games in general when they make you open a chest to get a piece of flint or some worthless junk. Fallout was the worst offender in they constantly had cabinets and lockers that had nothing in them, realistic yes but not good gameplay.
I ground like crazy to get the Fierce Deity sword, but it didn't realize it was breakable and you can only buy it twice!

Nintendo will offer better weapon durability with the dlc. Its like botw. Heres a cool bike to ride around in for 20 bucks 😂 they do this purposely.

    Great review.
Game is lacking some serious QoL that could have been added since BoTW and has introduced some new problems along the way.
I find ToTK to be extremely repetitive, tedious and cumbersome to play even with some slight mitigation from the duplication glitch. I never bothered exploring too far into areas as I knew I wouldn't find anything outside of some gems, materials or weapons that will shatter within seconds of use.
It's a good game that's been stretched and padded out to the point it's become bad in my case.

I agree! It's so much grinding in the beginning. Everything takes forever to do. The side quests even take forever. I've only done half the map so far and it's overwhelming. Feels like I've done nothing yet I've played probably 50+ hours

agree with quite literally every point this video makes. And the thing you said towards the end about just flat getting older, really resonated with me. I know for a fact that if I was younger I would have viewed this game as a second life, much like how I viewed Twilight Princess when I was a kid, but the fact of the matter is, having begun working a real job and having a ton of new responsibilities, I find myself just unable to get into it. Maybe it’s an age thing, maybe not. But it sucks.

My problem is this game doesn’t feel grounded with what the Zelda franchise is known for in a fantasy RPG, so much “technology”, abilities that would fit into another genre/style of game, and an overwhelmingly filled world with so much to do
I love the game, but Nintendo needs to go an entirely different direction for the next game. Bring back our traditional dungeons that are designed so effectively, maybe make them multifaceted so they may fit in an open world setting. Bring back dungeon items, while having them be used in the world environment, without breaking the flow of how you solve future dungeons you go too.
I would like them to change the style, bring back a more realistic theme like Twilight Princess, and or even some inspiration in a more world like fantasy game such as the Witcher series.
Nintendo I trust they will make a great game following up TotK, I’m just over this style of game, it’s really fun, but it takes a lot for me to get into it cause of how much is happening in the game and would love for the next one too go in a different direction completely

This game punishes anyone who has played BOTW. That's the biggest issue I can find with it. The other flaws are just dated game design choices already introduced in BOTW.

I just wish the game was more focused. I found the Great Sky Island tutorial level and some of the dungeons and more scripted moments the most fun from the game. After a while everything else felt so meaningless. This game could definitely use more structure and be less big. I'm actually hoping the next game is a lot more linear with more emphasis on story while keeping some of the physics and multiple ways to tackle some puzzles.

Yeah this video sums up the games biggest mechanical problem. It is just so insanely grindy and almost tries to make itself not fun. Also fully agree with your impressions of the opening area. When I got to that mine section my brain was slightly fried already. Then talking about MULTIPLE currency systems just fully cooked it.
And, this feeds into a few other problems. Like how they game just gives you quick options to skip travel via the towers giving so much height, and the easily ability to skip puzzles. None of this game seems to take into account emergent player behavior. Or really any player behavior. It sorta feels like a mix of a pet project that a few people tightly wound around themselves and nobody else, along with sticking parts onto a format that already exists (that being BotW) without thinking about how it affects this new game, its mechanics and its themes.

Thanks for this Chris - i can 100% relate to this. Pretty much all you said resonates- the grind, the world, the eventual purpose of your current action and the extremely underpowered Link you have to ‘put up’ with. Botw got open world absolutely spot on (even though you started with similar crap stamina. This was just botw map extended for depth and added grind till you get out of the boring stuff and can make a tik tok reel with your tractor spaceship tank.

i poured 20 and something hours in the game before thinking: "yeah... i already played this shit twice and it was funnier the last time" and then baldur's gate 3 came out, that game is a behemot and yet people were comparing this recycled 60 euro 7 years old average nintendo efortless thing to basically a simplier and less of a burden D&D.

Honestly my biggest problem is that I have 500+ hours in BOTW, and this game is just BOTW with some new gimmicks. My favorite part of BOTW was exploring the map and finding all sorts of cool areas and secrets but when i explore in TOTK, i just realize.. I've been here before. I've been everywhere, I've run out of things to find in BOTW, and then they just re-use the map. I want new areas to explore. (And no, the depths and sky islands dont count, those are boring and repetetive

imo the playthrough is very fun but post game there isnt much to do assuming you didnt just speedrun the main quest. A lot of side quests and stuff just boil down to searching for obscure items or hunting koroks for hours. Surprisingly duping made the game a lot more fun for me post game because then I could just do whatever I want. Honestly a creative mode or something would be really nice in totk.

My biggest issue with this game is how incredibly BORING the combat it. You think a game where one of the main gameplay loops is to fight enemies to take their loot they would at least put some effort into making the combat more snappy and fun. It's insane how Twilight princess somehow manages to have better combat than this modern day open world Zelda game. Like it would be cool if you could unlock combat skills by doing combat shrines or certain side missions or something but nope. Just spam flurry rush over and over wow what fun. Link feels more like an engineer than he does a actual swordsman in this game. Isn't he supposed to be the most talented knight in all of Hyrule?

I think the pain of a game not holding your hand and the pain of not being able to press A to bring up the cooking menu on a cooking pot are two different types of pain. The first one is more of a challenge that immerses you in the game. The second one is simply a nuisance that gets in the way with you interacting with the game.

Yeah, progress can be slow, specially upgrading the armor, requires quite a bit of patience. Walkthroughs or guide book is a MUST. It would take 10 years to figure all the requirements, say, to upgrade all armor and upgrade the sages. The sages can become an annoyance at some points, you may be trying to pick up some material and then one of the sages gets in the way and fires up. They can be disabled tho. All in all, I love the freaking game, I'm addicted to it 😂😂
