I was a gig handler for Rammstein on their 1st US tour, when they could barely speak English. And they were young and silly...but I can tell you, these 6 guys are well educated, sensitive and talented people who were very hard workers. And I've seen them work hard for decades now...they deserve their every success, and are unafraid to be controversial, bc the art, the music...it stands up.
I'm so happy to see that you have become a fan. They don't always take themselves seriously, and Till's lyrics have duality... always very carefully thought thru.
I hope you continue to explore their music. Have you heard Ohne Dich? The original video will make you cry again...and it's a beautiful song!

German is still the language of poetry. German words are expressive and have meaning. Compound words usually explain themselves and when you know parts of a word you know what the word means. All this lends itself well to "word play".
It's always funny when people say German is calming to them while on the other hand you have those people thinking German is just a harsh language, a lot of that being influenced by past propaganda and stuff. The harsh undertones and vibration of some German pronunciation can carry a lot of emotion either way.

I think it was Paul Landers from Rammstein who defended the band by saying something to the effect of “What’s really controversial? Back in the DDR (East Germany) running around town waving a specific flag was considered controversial too”. They grew up behind the iron curtain. They understand what actual censorship & authoritarianism looks like and refuse to give into it.

Nina Hagen is the "Queen of Punk" from the 80's and she is still around....best cover of Seeman i have ever seen. The song's lyrics involve a narrator describing the terrors of nightmares. The opening line of the song's intro and chorus ("Now, dear children, pay attention. I have brought something for you") is taken from the German children's TV Show "Mr Sandman", which provided children with a "nice" bedtime story. The song's narrator appears as a much more darker version of this character.
In this video, the character of the Sandman is played by Melanie Gaydos a famous model. Melanie Gaydos has suffered from a rare genetic defect since she was born: Her head is bald, her teeth and nails are malformed. She first appears to a sleeping Richard Kruspe, triggering nightmares and sending him into a state of agony. Meanwhile, Till terrorizes the complex of Beelitz-Heilstätten (military hospital of the Imperial German Army and Adolf Hitler recuperated there after being wounded in the first world war), which acts as an orphanage. He kidnaps the orphans and places them in a cage located in the main bathroom. A female warden attempts to defend the children with a shotgun, but Till overpowers her. The warden appears in the video both young (Viktorija Bojarskaja) and old (Anna von Rüden), while Till remains the same age, indicating immortality and paranormal abilities.
While guarding the orphans, Till takes a grotesque, insect-like form with an elongated head and fingers. The children are then used in various examinations and surgeries with the rest of the band playing the doctors. The female warden is also seen assisting them in her younger form. One of the surgeries sees a child's tears extracted through a syringe, which is then vaginally injected by the Sandman. The Sandman is also subject to examinations by the doctors, as Paul H. Landers is seen giving her a gynecological examination.
She later walks in a dress shielding two small children, possibly indicating that the tears are involved in a form of In vitro fertilisation. While Till is away from the main bathroom, the children (portrayed by the rest of the band as disheveled adults) escape from their cage and the orphanage. This causes Till to tear out and consume his own heart while the Heilstätten is engulfed in an inferno. The video ends with the liberated walking away from the building, while the chorus of the piano version plays in the background, signalling the video of the piano version as an afterword. (Wikipedia)
The song "my heart burns" is the film score for "Lilja 4-ever". A film about child prostitution. That's why you could interpret the text based on this film. In the film, girls from Russia lured to Sweden in the hope of a better life, in which a young and attractive man promises her heaven there: "Dear children, take care, I am the voice from the pillow" Then the sentence "Tore it out of my chest, I can imagine that she died inside every time she was raped. Since the rapes happen under cover of the night, this motif comes up frequently in the song. They steal your hot little tears, The film is a nightmare and it leaves a feeling of emptiness and powerlessness ...

Also worth mentioning: there is a novel from E.T.A. Hofmann called "Der Sandmann" which the childrens show is based on. But in the book, the sandman is not a nice friend, helping you to fall asleep, but instead is more like a monster, throwing sand in childrens eyes (and ripping them out I belive) at night, terrorizing them. I think this also went into the song.

Rammstein truely can be very moody / atmospheric and emotional, rather than just in your face (which is a game they of course have absolutely mastered).
More emotional Rammstein Songs that I really did feel were "Stirb nicht vor mir" and "Nebel" or "Klavier".
They are not the only ones, but probably my favorites. And also not as well known. Going into the popular ones, I'd recommend "Mutter" or "Seemann" (but I do prefer the Apocalyptica + Nina Hagen cover for that particular song). "Ohne dich" is quite good too, but I somehow heard a bit too often on the radio back in the day.

Aileen, I just watched your other " Mein Herz Brennt " video. This version is different than the other because it is a different iteration of the same song. The key to understanding the differences are the context of each video, which is different. This one is about death and hell that surrounds the living. The dying are visited by another sandman who puts people to sleep permanently rather than little children who sleep for the night. I hope this helps the dualistic nature of each song and then the two songs. One is sweet and pitiful while the other is violent and filled with death. These are two understandings of the same song that within each song is a dualistic nature. This far surpasses anything any band has ever done and expresses a multi - dimensional reality. The genius of Rammstein is how they probe the depths of the human experience throughout history in a vivid musical poetry form. Till and Richard were from East Berlin during the communist period and freedom was just on the other side of the fence. The question is - what is freedom ? Just how free are Capitalists ? It is like a cruel joke played on mankind. No matter which way you turn, corruption, cruelty and enslavement abound . Much of the music of Rammstein makes one deeply search their souls for the truth. I know where the truth lies but many ridicule it and are left searching and many will search until they die. Their music is very serious music in which there are no answers to the things they explore. They know this and that is why they sing about it. Well anyway, that is enough for now. Later. A friend always !

You're the first person I've heard saying the german language was beautiful. Everyone always calls it harsh and stuff. Even my american friend I worked with always said I was sounding cold for some reason. I don't know, I've been having a great time. 😅😅

Dear Aileen, first you do a great job! I think that also with the English translation a lot of semantic gets lost. As long as I hear Rammstein (since 1996) all lyrics are about child abuse, harassment, mental illnesses and sociopathic attitudes. There were a few years I could not hear their songs because of lyrics. It is also in this song, it is about nightmares of children’s and their fear from the buggy man and worse. Rammstein understands how to mix these sad and violence true stories with a perfect arraignment. A lot of the stories the tell in their lyrics are out of legal and children psychiatry, Like "ich tu dir weh" is all about a sociopathic how torture woman similar with "puppe" sexual child abuse of the sister and they describe the trauma of the younger brother. I really, like the music of Rammstein but being aware that most of the stories were true stories is hard still for me.

Definitely appreciate your thoughts from an artistic perspective because even though art can be lewd & sometimes uncomfortable it absolutely speaks truth when wanting to express the beauty that others will refuse to accept to keep flourishing from the horror which many prefer to be content with. 🎸⚡⚡⚡

One of my favorite things about Rammstein, as you also stated, is that they aren’t afraid to cover very controversial topics. Please check out Wiener Blut live at Wacken 2013. There should be a video out there that has the English subtitles. If not, definitely look up the meaning and lyrics first, because it’s a terrible story, but Till does such an amazing performance to really sell it, let me tell ya.

I can relate a lot to your experience with Rammstein's emotional songs & piano parts. Their musicvideo of "Deutschland" has a beautiful piano part at the end which made me also have teary eyes. (The piano part was a version of their song "Sonne" as far as I remember)

I saw the movie Lost Highway from David Lynch when it was out in the cinema (in the 90s). Rammstein was on the soundtrack with the song Rammstein. That was my first exposure to them and boy did it make an impression. I saw them live a few times and bought various albums but somehow that song stuck with me. I love many songs by Rammstein but that one will always be my favourite. As for being controversial...it's good that artists break through taboos. We have to question traditions or existing pre-conceived notions. Always question everything.

interesting that this song evoked such a strong emotional reaction. It is one of Rammsteins most known for sure, but I think they have other songs that are more emotional... Alter Mann Amour, Nebel, Seeman, Dalai Lama or Ohne Dich (although musically very simple, as most Rammstein-Songs) come to mind. but that is the beauty of music: It affects people very differently.

Used to listen it long ago but dropped them pretty fast. When they were "new-ish" in 90's i guess(rip), i enjoyed their music. And now I've seen few via your channel and enjoy band once again.

I would like to suggest that you listen to one or more of Til’s songs in his side project, Lindemann. Home Sweet Home is in English, and the live from Moscow version is the best. Also consider Steh Auf and Ich Hasse Kinder (the original music videos).

I’m sure, this late after, no one of note will see this comment. However, given the message of this song, it is even more important for people to hear and digest.
Children all over the world are being told they are not allowed to explore who they might be. Actual Nazis are rising in support of people who spread lies to get others to let them grind down our kids and push them into the sad boxes that the adults want them to fit into.
They fear children learning that there are all kinds of people in the world, and that they are supposed to be able to explore what being human means to them.
    My Heart Burns.
