It depends on the type of hook. It looks like most of the hooks that these sharks have are heavy stainless steel which just doesn't corrode. Alot of the smaller hooks used for freshwater are coated steel and will definitely rust fairly quickly. I have caught countless bass and other freshwater fish that had hooks that were rusted almost completely and just broke with a small tug from pliers.

The overwhelming majority of shark footage involves animals that have been sent into a frenzy with seal oil and fish blood. All the old stuff was like that and I believe even a lot of National Geographic footage of sharks breaching after hitting a drone or lure involves burley in the water. It is misleading and shows a very distorted view of how sharks actually behave in the wild. It is important to remember that they are apex predators, of course, and not harmless. They don't active prey on humans though, but an exploratory bite from a shark of any size will cause a fatal haemorrhage.

They can. Maybe not as impressive but just as important to the one they helped out.
I accidentally scared a sparrow off the side walk to get dinged by a passing car. Luckily the little one was only seemingly stunned. I used a Kleenex to pick him up out of the road & then after looking at him & examining his wings for injuries I was pretty sure he was going to be ok. So I made the decision that it was better for him to be placed behind cover in a tree. It was a little chilly, to me anyway, so I covered him with the Kleenexes & left him.
Hopefully he was ok. I think he was. But unless clearly injured I didn't want to take him on the bus clear across town without a dark box to put him in for recovery. So I tried to balance what was right for him.
Otherwise if at home I'd have probably put him in a dark quiet box in my closet
with a little container of water & left him for an hour or so.
If obviously injured I'd have contacted a rehabber for him.
But he was already coming around & looking around. His wings seemed ok.
So decided it wasn't worth the risk of stress killing him.
Again multiple buses for around 2 hours.
But if I'd left him in the hospital driveway there was a good chance he'd have been killed.
So my actions were important to that little cutie.
But obviously no where near as impressive as being friends with me a certain adorable shark for 2 decades.
Oh I also made very sure to thoroughly clean my hands with the rubbing alcohol I carry as a sanitizer afterwards.

The female tiger shark supposedly had just given birth.
He was swimming in deep ocean water off of Egypt.
      His family videoed his death.
The shark bites off his arms and lower face.

Wonderful!!! I love all animals, and I'm happy to hear there are people who can mingle with the sharks and understand they are not as threatening as people believe they are. I wouldn't suggest everyone just try this, if you are into deep sea diving, but to see this man enjoy his friend, Emma, and seeing how he relieves the sharks pain by removing these hooks is incredible! The sharks, like our pets, seem to know he is there to help them and not hurt them. There was a recent video of a woman who does this same act of kindness to her shark friends. God Bless you!

@@saltycat662 that's because you choose which animals to love AND which animals to murder & slaughter for your insignificant fleeting taste buds. I bet you've totally forgotten about what you had for lunch 2 days ago. Just because 'humans are complex and are capable of loving even inanimate objects', does that mean we should reduce certain animals to inanimate objects without any sentience or feelings so that humans feel better about exploiting and ultimately kill them? Funny you should acknowledge that we're animals too. But only when it's convenient to do so. When it's in your interest and favour to use & abuse non-human animals, you'd say they're not like us. When you agree to horrible things like animal experimentation/vivisection, you'd say they're like us, therefore any scientific results should likewise apply to human animals. When you say you love chickens, you don't actually love chickens for who they are. You just love how they taste. To tie it all back, you're kinda right. You don't have to be vegan to love animals. You just HAVE TO learn a little respect and have some basic decency to leave animals alone. Don't use, abuse, misuse, exploit, harm, torture and slaughter them for any purpose at all.

Non-human animals are often much better at recognising us than the other way around.
Local pigeons befriended me after my last quaker parrot passed away (see below). First it was only two. Word got around in the pigeon community. I have no idea how they do it, but they recognize me, also often in other streets, while I usually am completely unable to recognize them unless they look remarkably different from other pigeons.
The two I just mentioned have also totally surprised me one day when I made a human "come over" gesture to which they responded instantly (they flew over to me from another rooftop); it did not even strike me as odd at the time. It's happened more than once. But how on earth did they know what I meant?
I've encountered one of them in another street once, told him to follow me that I would give him food, and lo and behold, sure enough, he was at my door when I later went outside with some food.
One evening, after I had been away for a few weeks or so, I suddenly looked up and from my office window, that same pigeon (who knows me quite well) was on a roof where pigeons never sit but from where they can look into my office. He clearly wanted to know whether I was back; at least that is what it looked like. Never seen a pigeon on that roof since either. (They can see over huge distances.)
(I am still quite friendly with two and have meanwhile adopted a slightly handicapped one who I rehabbed and then stayed. She still goes for chats and frolics in the air with her pals, but she lives in my place.)
I knew almost nothing about pigeons until about five years ago, when I looked up one day (from sanding a table in my main room) and there was a pigeon indoors, on my windowsill, in my microgreens tray, quietly observing me.
I knew almost nothing about birds in general either until I "accidentally" ended up volunteering at a bird hospital because I wanted to grow roots in the local community, in Florida in the 1990s, and called around for volunteering opportunities. A bird hospital was simply the first to call me back. I later adopted two non-releasable quaker parrots from them and they taught me a lot. Among other things, I learned that many non-human animals are quite patient with us and sometimes wonder if we will ever get it, that they too are sentient beings who know things and make observations and decisions and draw conclusions.
Humans are an arrogant species. We believe that our kind of knowledge is the only kind there is and that it can only be transmitted through human languages, while so many non-human species have been on the planet so much longer than the human species and communicate too and have different skills and abilities that are not necessarily inferior to ours. (They must also know a lot more about the planet than we do, by the way.)
