Why in a society that focused the family so much was it often that families were their own worst enemy? Well, one factor is the menoto. While it can't be blamed as the cause of these things, it did not help. As much as there was a sense of obligation to family and such, there was also little emotional bond, especially between siblings, in many cases.
Because it is not really about family or honour as we define them but ALL about facade. And as long as that is intact the rest isn't maybe of so much relevance.
Yeah, the ruthless view of her became popular during the Edo period, when the Neoconfucian ideology basically said "women in politics = evil"...what a surprise that suddenly, the evaluation of women who wielded power plummeted (see also Hino Tomiko about 150 years later for the other famous warrior-wife that, let's say, isn't exactly revered in most accounts)
@@Linfamy Well, if you read most historical tales or chronicles of the Kamakura and Muromachi periods, she's always depicted as the lady who did everything to have Yoritomo's legacy not fall apart. Being the reincarnation of Empress Jingû is the most positive evaluation that you can find from the later 13th century onward (in the Azuma kagami, amongst other sources). In general, Hojo Yoshitoki, Masako, and Yasutoki are held in high esteem and seen as embodiments or reincarnations of Buddhist deities or similar; especially Yasutoki constantly was praised as a model for samurai to aspire to. He's something like the embodiment of a warrior who is also wise and educated, and thus exactly what the warrior-bureaucrat of the Edo period was supposed to be like.

Yeah to be honest the idea that she married Yoritomo for status makes no sense given the fact that the Minamoto name wasn’t an asset when they met, it may have had a small part in it but it’s likely that they actually did care about each other

An in depth comparison would actually be quite interesting if some random history YTber happens to read this. :-D
@@Linfamy I don't know if the latter actually ever happened, but usually not. Meanings of words can shift over time and there's just no better word/translation for it. To quote Wikipedia: "This long history of political and military use indicates that political authorities or generals would legally agree to hand over one or usually several hostages in the custody of the other side, as guarantee of good faith in the observance of obligations. These obligations would be in the form of signing of a peace treaty, in the hands of the victor, or even exchange hostages as mutual assurance in cases such as an armistice. Major powers, such as Ancient Rome and the British who had colonial vassals, would especially receive many such political hostages, often offspring of the elite, even princes or princesses who were generally treated according to their rank and put to a subtle long-term use where they would be given an elitist education or possibly even a religious conversion. This would eventually influence them culturally and open the way for an amicable political line if they ascended to power after release."

Wait, that's what an ideal samurai was supposed to do. Damn scrap that.
Totally irrelevant to the historical aspect, but I'll blabber about it anyway. The fact that people don't know what wet nursing is, both as a fact of historical family life and child raising and its current state in the west is a shame. So many people end up going almost all in on using formula as a replacement altogether, when it can be really harmful to do so. Proper nursing is important both for the physical health of your child, but also its early brain development. Because as long as the milk comes from a healthy eating person, the ratio of certain fatty acids is tailored exactly to the development of a human being. So throwing it away altogether, ontop of most cultures only letting the child nurse for half a year to a year, when they're meant to nurse partially for way longer than that, is a huge flaw in modern culture, that too few are aware of. Though I can imagine the audience demographics here aren't in my favour, if you're a mother with an abundant supply, donate it to help others around formula, and even if you aren't a mother yet yourself, you can just induce it and help out the future health of your community that way.

Is this series gong to eventually explain what "Nun" means?
I thought there was a shotgun in the fan because it looked like it-
I'd call it love for sure women rarely married down in societys especially if they havent disgraced themselves.
0:05 I'd build a horse archery school/retreat with a gym, martial arts equipment (hema, jj and lethwei rather than karate) and maybe a shooting range and one of those houses for cqc exercises in the middle of nowhere and spend my life trying to become the best killing machine this world has seen.
