This reminded me of a family friend (who is an avid practitioner of Nichiren Buddhism) who first introduced me to Buddhism, and explaining to me that Buddhism is like a bunch of different schools. I was raised with Nichiren’s intense Buddhism, left Japan at 22 to stay out of the religion and my parents, recently found myself being a standup comedian in Canada. And I’m happy with it so maybe the religion wasn’t that bad after all :)
Buddha Shakyamuni sat under the Bodhi tree to meditate & realise highest Truth and he demonstrated how to become a Buddha.
Nichiren, out of compassion, preaches Wonderful Law of Lotus Sutra. Please chant yourself morning and evening 15 mins or more as you like to feel most spiritually fulfilled, awakening to your innate Buddha wisdom and purify your 8 consciousness, accumulate the great fortune/blessings.
He probably invented the phrase 'This will hurt me more then you' while giving someone a compassionate beating.😅

As a practicing Nichiren Buddhist, it's kind of hilarious to see this take. You should look up the SGI vs the Nichiren Temple sects. It's wild.

My former mother in law is a casual follower but her bestie is a dedicated practitioner of Nichiren Buddhism/heavily involved with Soka Gokkai International.. They're both genuinely wonderful people, and I personally had nothing but super positive experiences and interactions with SGI/their services. But I've also heard some pretty culty stuff about SGI since then. So I'm not sure if it's just certain chapters of SGI, or if SGI is just an actual full blown cult, lol.

Nicheren challenges my conviction of not falling into the No-True-Scotsman fallacy (doubly so as they do) in regards to Buddhism.
My family was Nicheren for a very short amount of time (was like 6-8 at the time). At the very least visited their organization and I remember that chant. Can’t say we stayed for long though. I wasn’t really quick on the draw for why one would spend so much time worshiping a book instead of reading it.
Fast forward years later and I’m in Boot Camp, on Sunday there are various religious services and am delighted to see Buddhism as one. And who is in charge but the Soka Gakkai (nicheren lay organization). Now at this point I’m reasonably learned in Buddhist teachings amongst many sects and am internally turning into the Spanish Inquisition as they preach doctrines exceptionally at odds with even general Buddhist thought. What’s more tragic to me is that this is likely the first time many of the recruits going through basic training are seriously exposed to Buddhism.
Even the hierographic accounts of Nicheren’s life they were promoting failed to not make him look like a jerk.
I had friends who dealt with Buddhist supplies and artifacts. They always got hate mail and death threats from SGI members. They’re crazy.
I like🙏🏾💛. My experience with the local sect in OC was nice enough but I tried to make sure to set boundaries and share my insight from other schools to hopefully help mend the divide

The biggest irony is that the Lotus Sutra central message is that of inclusivity. That any path and practices eventually lead the person to becoming enlightened as buddhas because it is ultimately one vehicle. How this message became ironically so sectarian under Nichiren is mind boggling
There seems to be a trend with Japanese buddhism, being cut-off from the mainland to evolve completely differently from the main teachings. I mean, I'm sure sleeping with younger monks wasn't part of the original teachings either lol
Same thing with Jesus' original message of love, forgiveness & acceptance. Of course after they crucified him, the establishment co-opted his teachings & created the Roman Catholic Church. & here we still are, fighting crusades in the Middle East.
@@JumpoableJust like how there is gay Christians even though the bible explicitly said that its a sin?
It’s no different from just about any other religion with central texts. People end up glorifying the text rather than reading its contents. Christianity is supposedly about mercy, compassion, charity, etc. but then you have people like the Westboro Baptist Church…
Heretics have taken over the faith. We need fire not compassion to protect the dharma

I'm a bit confused with this guy's attitude: doesn't the Lotus Sutra say that all Buddhist practices and rituals are skillful means for reaching enlightenment? To me, that means that no matter which branch of Buddhism I might follow, I will always become a Buddha.
Nichiren taught that all other skillful means are like rivers that flow to the ocean but the Lotus Sutra is the ocean itself. Which is explained in the Lotus Sutra chapter two, expedient means.
He also taught the concept of becoming a Buddha in this lifetime, rather than being reborn eventually into a Buddha… and that chanting the title of the Lotus Sutra will awaken your Buddha nature in your present self.

_and become a muslim out of spite_ That's how muslims are born... I know because I nearly became one myself. I'm Austrian and thus catholic. Our church did pretty much everything on the list of what to never ever do, if you want to keep your followers. My parents moved to Germany and there I was constantly treated as a second class citizen and got constantly reminded that no matter how hard I try to integrate myself, I'll always remain an Austrian to them. I got told many times that I do not belong here and should go back; that we are inferior and so on. It once even came close to a fight for no good reason. Just that my mother told them that they were breaking the law and in order to protect us, I seriously drew my knife to dissuade them. On top of it all, my parents didn't get along and their relatives hated each other with a passion and I was the one in between... The nicest people I met back then were muslims. You could have called them at 03:00 for help and they would come! Plus my neighbours tried to match me with a beautiful woman (though there were some issues with that deal...). I was really tempted back then despite being more of an atheist.
Atheism is fine but has no political backing. Satanism is the was to go now.
brother, Islam is not a political party, it's a religion that tells you what's wrong and what's right.so in the end it's your choice who you want to follow.

I knew there was something weird about the religion when my mom said that people used to hardcore try to convert people in Japan Jehovah's Witness style. And now I know that Nichiren Daishonen was a huge DICK bag and was a very flawed hardheaded man. Sucks though because I like the fact that he says that anyone can attain enlightenment, both men and women from all classes without needing Reincarnation .

There are currently different schools based on Nichiren teachings, at least one of which does exactly what you say, but not all of them are like that. I've been attending a local Nichiren temple, that follows the Nichiren Shu school, and nobody told me that chanting the Odaimoku by itself will lead people to enlightenment. Of course they teach the Lotus Sutra more than other ones, but any of the other schools you mentioned have a favourite sutra of their own, that they base their doctrine upon and it is very likely that they too thought their ones were the best, isn't it?.
For that matter, Nichiren himself in his letters (which I read myself) emphasised the importance of studying all Sutras, and the induist teachings as well.
I also think worth mentioning that Nichiren emphasised a certain chapter of the Lotus Sutra, that is The Dragon King's Daughter, where it is said metaphorically that everyone, in spite of their low condition in life, can attain enlightenment with their own sensibility without having to be reborn as a (male) monk of high rank. That's why a lot of his followers were peasants. Morover, many letters by him that have been preserved are responses to women where he tells them that they have the same potential of other beings to attain enlightenment, whereas the traditional heian buddhism was so mean to women to the extent of forbidding them from learning chinese and reading the holy sutras by themselves.
He also used to criticise monks that did not live the true monastic life and got married, lived in luxury, eat meat and got involved in politics out of ambition.
Also speaking of politics, you surely remember that the powerful monasteries of the time had been deeply involved in politics at least since the Nara period, many centuries before; they had their own armies that would often intervene in dynastic fights to back their favourite pretender, which sometimes would bring unfortunate retribution, such as the burning of Nara by the Heike clan on the brink of the Genpei war.
The retired emperor Shirakawa, some 100 years before Nichiren's birth, used to say " though an emperor, three things escape my power, the outcome of the dice roll, the river floods and the monks of mount Hiei". Still sure no politics?
I went to a local Nichiren Buddhist center a couple of times. The vibes it gave me were awfully similar to the ones I had when I used to go to evangelical Christian churches. Kinda creepy and cult-like.

Buddhism does have an evil god called Mara who seeks to prevent enlightenment, who serves essentially the same role as Satan in Christianity.
In Buddhism, Māra is the deva of passion and desire, and as such, of things impeding enlightenment and cycle of death and rebirth. The root of his word seems to connect to the Indo-European root word for "death". He is considered a bad thing, and as such pops up in media as a demonic being, and is sometimes translated into English as "devil".
The original term used is 禅天魔 (zen-tenma) which does refer to Māra. In Buddhism there are several māras, but the one who pestered Shakyamuni Buddha is said to have already converted to Buddhism.
*Meanwhile in China*
Chad Monk: There's only one Buddha, plus we borrow this religion from the Indian.
Also, I suspect Buddhist schools in China and Bharat had so much similarities due to the trade and cordial relations between the two back then. They will likely diverge a lot more in the coming century.
Can you please make a video about ryujin the japanese sea god?
Gosho Passage - November 1, 2021
"My disciples, you should believe what I say and watch what happens. These things do not occur because I myself am respectworthy, but because the power of the Lotus Sutra is supreme. If I praise myself, people will think that I am boastful, but if I humble myself, they will despise the sutra. The taller the pine tree, the longer the wisteria vine hanging from it. The deeper the source, the longer the stream. How fortunate, how joyful! In this impure land, I alone enjoy happiness and delight."
From Gosho "A Sage Perceives the Three Existences of Life" (The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin Volume I, page 642)
Wow such a good story
How about a video on the Ikko Ikki Buddhist sect? You know the ones that Nobonaga sieged for a couples years.
Look up his Pure Land Buddhism video in this series. They are there.
You're not really suffering for the lotus sutra if you're clearly enjoying every moment of it.
In Japan, many religions are jokes, but the emperor and Nichiren are not jokes.
While Nichiren is wary of being an anti-emperor, the ideals of the Empire of Japan are advocated by Nichirenists. And Nichirenists are the current ruling party of Japan.
The current Nichirenist Komeito (a political party in the Diet) is disliked by the right as an anti-Emperor Buddhist and by the left as a traditional anti-Communist religious group.
How did Nichirenists won power in japan?

By providing social welfare to supporters.
Unfortunately, Nichirenists are one of the most humanist groups in modern Japan.
@@user-ys8xe1xd2x You can find them even in Brazil
@@user-ys8xe1xd2x What do you mean by "humanist"?
I suppose the Nichirenist party you mention is the Soka Gakkai, am I wrong?
The chant of taking refuge in the lotus sutra is taught at the US Airforce Basic Training if you go to the Buddhist religious service.
I practice Nichiren Daishonin Buddhism. It is a transformative practice. This really funny.
Ah yes "jamming your compassion down peoples throats" works every time!
The lotus sutra, that posits that all buddhist practices are one vehicle of many different skillful means? THAT Lotus sutra?
The irony astounds.
Watching his videos is a knowledge giving joy😊😊
You all are just comedians. Nothing makes sense. Japan.🧑🦳
Kato Kiyomasa was a devout Nichiren Buddhist.
That explains a lot.
He hated christians so much, that he disembowled a pregnant woman in front of a christian lord in kyuhsu.

My grandparents were Nichiren Kyokai but my family is Pure Land Buddhists. Nichiren are known as the hardcore Buddhists. Pure Land is the more laid back Buddhists.
Not untrue, although pure landers can be strict when needed
This was super interesting and funny lol
Glad you like 👍
if the Marvel villain Ultron had a faith he would become a robotic Ichiren Buddhist Monk

Kiyomasa Kato was a devout Nichiren follower.
Just gonna say, if there was any mushroom trip, it was when the Buddha passed away.

bro your facts are off right off the start. Nichiren was from a fisherman family. Please read the major writing of Nichiren before making your next video about the gosho.
Nichiren sounds like he really got that whole "elimination of desire thing" down pat. :P
So they are the Buddhist equivalent of Westboro Baptists?
Westboro is just a litigation mill.
Interesting to know even though I am not Buddhist but in a way I am raised Catholic.
Now-now~Nichiren teaching vs The art of the Deal.
I hope you do a video on tendai and shingon sects! I think those incorporate some indigenous Shinto practices, though given how accommodating Buddhism and Shinto are, maybe that’s not some innate part of the practice but a reflection of general cultural practices?
Anyway I’ve been really enjoying this series, thanks!

I'm endlessly grateful to Nichiren and the Buddha Gautam Siddhartha. Your take has left me underwhelmed
Thank you for having enough presence of mind to actually go into WHY he was that obsessed. Too often, videos like this are "He was just evil for the sake of being evil because he liked being evil".
While in reality, that description fits absolutely no one.
No one is evil for the sake of being evil.
They're evil because they either think it necessary for some greater good they perceive, or because they deny that it's evil altogether
One has to travel one's own path. Nichiren's teaching of the lotus sutra is spread because people practicing it assiduously see actual proof of the benefits in their lives. I'm in my 36th year of practice and am deeply grateful to my life every moment. Before I began practicing I was a grumbler and was whingeing and begrudging my life. I identified only with my body and mind. Now I know my body and mind house the Buddha nature as it's inherent in all life. Your opinion and slanderous tone has left me cold!
This is exactly why I switched from Nichiren to Vajrayana.

Hi
Hi there
Here in Japan, Nichiren Shu is generally viewed as being a "normal" Buddhist sect that is open to everyone, while Nichiren Shoshu/Soka Gakkai are both viewed as cultish groups that reject all other forms of Buddhism as heretical (and both groups believe that members of the other group will go to hell).
I’m not the most educated but I don’t think shoshu believes in hell being a place like that. Isn’t it a state of mind you can fall in and out of? I don’t know, just what I’ve been told.
@@VincentEdelstein I live near a Nichiren Shoshu temple. It is literally written on a board in front of the entrance warning Sokka Gakkai members to repent and return to Nichiren Shoshu or else...
From my brief experience Nichiren Buddhism just jettisons most of the Buddha's teachings in favour of just chanting every day 🤷♀️
Imagine if college students adopted Nichiren's mentality, that simply repeating the *title* of something over and over is the equivalent of *reading it* that many times. How well do you think they'd do on their exams if they simply repeated the *title* of their textbooks over and over (like brainless dolts), trusting that the repetition of the *title* would magically impart to them the *information* contained within the text itself - without needing to actually READ the thing?? But then Nichiren *himself* declared that the Lotus Sutra was now completely ineffective: "Now, in the Latter Day of the Law, neither the Lotus Sutra nor the other sutras have the power to save the people. Only Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo can lead all people to Buddhahood." - Nichiren
Hello. Yes only The Nichiren Shonin make sense.Japan.
Nichiren never said this
Nichiren is very much the whole world must learn of our peaceful ways... by force
As an Indonesian, I share a similar feeling with the Tendai, Shingon and Zen. My country full of another version of Nichiren. They even preach their accusation against others religion with some outdoor loudspeakers....Hahaha...!!
Investing in a pair of good quality noise cancelling headphone is a great deal.
Hear me out, guys, "Based Buddhism."
Along with Sakyamuni , Nagarjuna and Boddhidharma, Nichiren is fucking Badass. (And kickasses) punk rock Buddha
