The only time I’ve found con funk was when I was standing behind this one girl. It seems that con funk depends on the size of the con and venue. A big venue has more airflow.

Tips for fellow sufferers: wear linen and cotton (stay away from synthetic fibers as much as possible, specially if they are not a form of viscose), and use a very high quality deodorant. Never an anti-transpirant, though!!
I think it's good to point out that Yoshiwara was actually REALLY SMALL in total area. The fact that it housed 75 taiyuu at one point (who are supposedly the creme de la creme of all women in Yoshiwara), shows how cramped it was for the women living there.

It’s really interesting how much farther developed and diverse the pleasure district roles were back then in Japan versus the pleasure roles in other parts of the world like Europe. Love the vid Linfamy keep it up!
Europe was also largely Christian, and even the parts that weren't (largely Albania and some of the Caucasus,) still had the concept of "original sin." They probably thought of sex with whores as a necessary evil to prevent sex outside of marriage from becoming common throughout the culture.

The controversy around whether or not Geisha were prostitutes is rather fascinating to me. It is fairly well established historical fact that Geisha did sell sex during some eras, but in others they were strictly artisans. It seems to me that there was just some crossover whenever times were hard. The practice of selling a girls virginity is also associated with Geisha, but I think there's much less historical evidence for that
I think it's partly because US military men did not understand the differences between different types of workers in the red lantern district and were most interested in the prostitutes.

I could image the various professions overlapping each other. Maybe some women changed careers depending what was in demand, but I'm just guessing obviously.
It's also worth noting that it wasn't uncommon for giesha to have intimate relationships with clients though it wasn't part of their job usually. Nagakaura Shinpachi of Shinsengumi fame was known to have fathered an illegitimate daughter with one, who later went on to become a famous geisha herself.
It was a miserable life. Not that life in general was rosy for the masses but to be fated as a prostitute of whatever kind was extra hard. I never believed the nothing-but-glamorous image of the geisha they promote nowadays. I always knew that was facade.
Unfortunate that pretty much all these "jobs" involved a huge risk of STD. If I have understood correctly, none of these women lived long, most being dead before they reached 30. Only safe way for women was to have a family that was able to back her up in case of trouble. Then her "job" was to get a good marriage, but at least the n she could choose if she wanted sex.

Like for example, many kabuki actresses, then male child actors, were also selling sex on the side - which led to the Bakufu banning women and young boys from performing kabuki. Not only do their profession automatically link them to the pleasure quarter, the geisha themselves - while appearing more understated than the oiran - were also selling a kind of erotic service in form of music, dance, appearance and conversation. And of course, some of them sold sex (just not as part of their geisha service, kinda like a part-time gig). Thus, in the early decades of modern Japan, geisha were still considered the "bad girls" of society, that modern Japanese women should NOT aspire to be (under the mantra of "good wives, wise mothers"). The reason this idea is turned completely over its head is because at one point, the postwar government were cracking down on prostitution, and in order to spare geisha of the ban that would have killed the profession, tea house owners and other advocates began to argue that geisha are actually the opposite of prostitution. What I think a lot of people get wrong about geisha is how they're essentially just a much fancier version of hostesses. In the modern era, it's so much harder to get into the industry and there are far fewer, so the likelihood of anything sexual is close to nil, but it doesn't mean people won't still harass them or attempt to cross that line. In the past? Well, strippers aren't supposed to sell sex either but there will always be people who want to make more money. Even with hostesses every patron will still dream that it's real and there's a chance to have sex with her, and some will be willing to take advantage of those desires.

In India we had temple prostitutes (devdasis) . Initially they were rather respected since they worked as priestesses , dancers and teachers( and sex workers,since sex was a spiritual experience)and were considered a good influence on noble ladies, but around the 18th and 19th centuries they were considered temple( hence public property) and were only seen for their sexual activities, not their devotion. Luckily the practice has largely died out, with only a few temples housing devdasis.

It's very easy to each sushi with only one chopstick: throw it away and use your fingers, this is legit by food etiquette in Japan. Also the capital of Japan during Edo period was Kyoto - Edo was the center of power and the shogunal capital, sure, but Kyoto was still the capital. Some of the most famous tayû were from Kyoto like Yoshino 吉野太夫 and Yûgiri 夕霧太夫 who are part of the three most famous with Takao 高尾太夫 from Edo that you mention. Even nowadays there are women in Kyoto maintaining the artistic aspects of their traditions.
Tea house with the meaning of quite place with a view, where polite women serve you tea while you chat with a friend or ruminate alone sounds like a perfect place to me.
It's interesting to see how many of these "entertainment" styles still exist within modern day Japan. Geisha and modern day idols might not be prostitutes, but their role is very similar to the ones you describe, and soapland staff would very much be modern day yuna. And girls bars and hostess clubs were girls entertain guests through conversation and attention are very much still a thing in Japan. Kinda wish the tea house version was more of a thing rather than the modern day standard alcohol-based version though.

Like everything in life, there are gray areas. Duble resagurge Geisha who did "side" work did happen. Also the Geisha are sometimes called Gigi. Just like a big fast food chan has different rules under different francesees, and that could differ from courpret run ones , so a lot of Geisha and geisha house was like that, add in different regions with there own little flare and you get the fast food francesees, courpret fast food,and even the international fast food. It's kinda like how McDonald's in different countries are ran do things different then a USA McDonald's down the street vs the McDonald's that are Owen and Ran by the courpataion and not "leased" to the francesees who also have there own dfrrinces based on verying facters and they all operate a little different from each other. I'm just using McDonald's as an example, many fast food and places that have freanceees do this. Good video lymphame , a nice short way to get the point across without making a hours long documentry on it. (I'd definitely be down for a hours long deep dive on the pleasure quarters and the women inhabited it and those who about circle it) 😊

Ofc the one who "freed" her and bought her was the male lead... While the manga i was reading is absolutely fiction the things i have read in there who i thought was fiction is actually real made me remember this... While the story hasn't revealed the age of the main character.. Based on the height and how every one is treating her seems like she's 10-15 years old... While the prince (male lead) is canon. 19 years old... The manga has some things in there that modern people would prolly cancel about... There's a lot of pedophilia, misogyny, racism?, assassination ofc for the palace drama, and lots lots more.... I'm happy to be born in the modern world and not in this fucked up time frame... Just reading about that 9 years old consort giving birth to the heir of the country fucked me up.... It was soo truamatic that i could feel it...

Some of the most famous tayû were from Kyoto like Yoshino 吉野太夫 and Yûgiri 夕霧太夫 who are part of the three most famous with Takao 高尾太夫 from Edo that you mention.

Tea house with the meaning of quite place with a view, where polite women serve you tea while you chat with a friend or ruminate alone sounds like a perfect place to me.
It's interesting to see how many of these "entertainment" styles still exist within modern day Japan. Geisha and modern day idols might not be prostitutes, but their role is very similar to the ones you describe, and soapland staff would very much be modern day yuna. And girls bars and hostess clubs were girls entertain guests through conversation and attention are very much still a thing in Japan. Kinda wish the tea house version was more of a thing rather than the modern day standard alcohol-based version though.

Like everything in life, there are gray areas. Duble resagurge Geisha who did "side" work did happen. Also the Geisha are sometimes called Gigi. Just like a big fast food chan has different rules under different francesees, and that could differ from courpret run ones , so a lot of Geisha and geisha house was like that, add in different regions with there own little flare and you get the fast food francesees, courpret fast food,and even the international fast food. It's kinda like how McDonald's in different countries are ran do things different then a USA McDonald's down the street vs the McDonald's that are Owen and Ran by the courpataion and not "leased" to the francesees who also have there own dfrrinces based on verying facters and they all operate a little different from each other. I'm just using McDonald's as an example, many fast food and places that have freanceees do this. Good video lymphame , a nice short way to get the point across without making a hours long documentry on it. (I'd definitely be down for a hours long deep dive on the pleasure quarters and the women inhabited it and those who about circle it) 😊

The sold girl's adoptive father/grandfather? Taught her about medicine and she was an assistant pharmacist because for some reason women can't become a doctor.. Anyway... While her grandmother? (idk who she is to her but she calls her grandmother) owns and sells courtesans.. Her mother was also owned by the grandma... her mother was a very high ranking courtesan who caught a disease and became ugly... But since she was very high ranked and was loved.. She wasn't thrown out... The sold girl was taught everything about the things in the video said... She was a kamuro, and she also calls the other courtesans big sisters, since she also grew up there the "big sisters" became her wet nurse and even some became a full on mother... The grandmother is trying to groom her and sell her but she's just too preoccupied with medicine and hard to deal with to be sold off... Ofc the one who "freed" her and bought her was the male lead...
While the manga i was reading is absolutely fiction the things i have read in there who i thought was fiction is actually real made me remember this...
While the story hasn't revealed the age of the main character.. Based on the height and how every one is treating her seems like she's 10-15 years old... While the prince (male lead) is canon. 19 years old...
The manga has some things in there that modern people would prolly cancel about... There's a lot of pedophilia, misogyny, racism?, assassination ofc for the palace drama, and lots lots more....
