I got to back-up sing for him in San Francisco when he assembled a choir for the song "One Voice." My mom was a greeter at the amphitheater. She was so proud of me back then.

Exactly.....I couldn't have been more than 8 or 9 during his most lovable hits. "The Old Songs" from '82 or '83 when I was finally a teenager hit home with me.
I saw Barry in concert in early June 1975 at the US Naval Academy. He played this, saying it was just being released and did mention an uptempo version. BF (now DH) worked lighting (midshipmen handled all technicals) and said Barry was a real diva to work with for all the crews. I understand Barry adjusted his attitude over time and became a nice guy. And I still think this the most beautiful song he's ever written.

I think my friend Ian Owles was the lighting camera man on this video and Barry Manilow told him afterwards that he felt no one had made him look that good before. A few years later Ian sadly died.
@@NEbluefire Hi, not sure if I agree with you on the women bit. From what I could see there were 3 doing backing and one playing the violin on stage and a mysterious one in the audience. Did I miss something? One could argue that backing singers of either sex are often positioned on stage for more than just sound (in both senses of the word) reasons. Objectification is a part of who we all are, it's whether that's all someone sees another as that's the issue, the alternative can result in a bit of a sackcloth world.

As with so many other performers, Barry has simply reworked his greatest recording of all - he most certainly has not "sold out", & as it's his song, he has every right to do as he pleases with it. As for this 21st century "thing" about looks, he is ageing just fine to me - if everything in the world was based upon looks instead of natural ability, we would all be living on an infinitely poorer planet. Barry Manilow is one of the most gifted performers and songwriters we have been privileged to witness, & he will be judged on his legacy, & not his looks, thank goodness. Bravo, Barry.
