If the cancer is in the lymph nodes, the number of lymph nodes determines the stage. If there are 1 to 3 lymph nodes that have cancer in them, this is Stage II (2). If there is cancer in 4 or more nodes, this is Stage III (3). The stage also depends on the tumor size. People have Stage IV (4) disease when the cancer has spread to other parts of the body at the time they are diagnosed with breast cancer.
