My hometown once produced more steel than any Nation. Pittsburgh was called the industrial capital of the world. It built the Empire State Building the Golden Gate Bridge the Tennessee Valley Authority the big three in Detroit. Rebuilt all of Europe after the second World War and the Pacific Rim. Then we got lazy in research and development and let the West Germans and the Japanese beat us at our own game. But that is now changing. 30% of the mills in Pittsburgh a reopening. I'm just curious of why anybody's watching this anyway. Why does anybody give a rat's ass with some guy from England who sent the rugby cares about American football. I doubt that there's an American doing a piece on English rugby...

"because they had a lot of steel mills or something" - oh my god is that an understatement. Pittsburgh is one example of the engine of American manufacturing that, when kicked into gear, can generate completely ridiculous levels of raw materials. Pittsburgh's steel mills at one point generated 60% of all steel in the United States. Those mills built that city and many others and churned out the steel that made tanks and ships for World War I and II and the metal was used for things such as the Golden Gate Bridge. This was no clean system, those factories ran on the blood and sweat from men off all ages, from children to seniors, focused on one goal, Steel, and in most cases were under the economic powerhouses of Andrew Carnegie and JP Morgan (the people, not the institutes that bear their names). The Steelers team was born out of that mindset and the logo on the helmet is the logo for Carnegie's US Steel, a very good chance that that logo can even be found in older buildings in your country too. Sadly, or fortunately depending on how you look at it, the steel industry collapsed in the 80's after a series of problems and the city is still recovering. In a way, they are much like Detroit, both are homes to American industry and some of the titans of an era but that time has passed.. we'll see where things go.

Satsunata, you forgot the steel for the Empire State Building the Tennessee Valley Authority works and the big three in Detroit known as General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler. Also a lot of that steel was used to rebuild Europe Aloha Pacific Rim after the second World War not just for the war effort itself. When Andrew Carnegie sold to JP Morgan, Carnegie was the richest man in the world. Also Pittsburgh has over 500 Bridges more than any city in the world all that steel came from where? Right there in the Burgh. I am 68 years old and as a child my hometown was called the industrial capital of the world!

The Pittsburgh accent is typically called "Pittsburghese". Part of the reason is because it usually sounds like a completely foreign language to people from outside of the Pittsburgh area. Various Pittsburghese pronunciations include: "Worshington" = "Washington", "Dahntahn" = "Downtown", "Pixburgh" = "Pittsburgh" and "da Stillers" = "the Steelers". We also have "Yinz" = "You all", which is where the colloquial term for Pittsburghers comes from, "Yinzers".

you all = y'all lol. yinz to me is more like you-ins or you (young)ins but is more like callin someone kid or kiddo, same concept as a 20 yr old waitress down south calling you "darlin" like shes your grandma, gramma, granny, etc even though shes younger than you. language is interesting. either way, when i was knee high to a duck, i saw the steelers on tv and my dad kept yellin at the tv and told me to come watch, and i kinda stood there... but the only time i was interested in football was when they were on. they always had something crazy and badass happen during the game, so theyre literally the reason i started watching football. ill be a steelers fan and stand by that my entire life. i dont know why our passion is so much stronger than other team's fans, but ive had people pull back and be like "oh a steelers fan" and im just proud as hell of it. i dunno. the eagles are a close second i think. theyre up there with us, but we all know why lol. also, worshington is comparable to "torlet" toilet or "worshing machine" washing machine lol. it blends from the east coast to the midwest. its funny to hear.

The Steelers are still the heart of the sports culture with the Pens not far behind. You can not appreciate it unless you see it first hand! The food scene is down right amazing! Bill Klee, and to add to that Jonas Salk invented the polio vaccine at the University of Pittsburgh medical center. Also known as the Cathedral of Learning. When built was the tallest University in the world! Let's not forget about Westinghouse air brake General Electric Allis Chalmers and all the other companies they come from there in that general area. Oh and let's not forget the first public television and radio in America! There's actually a book published called Pittsburgh firsts. It's a leather-bound onion skin like a Bible in about a quarter inch thick of all the things that happened there first it's amazing Pittsburgh has more history the New York and Boston combined. We were the Western outpost on the western side of the Appalachian Mountains when we were still colonies. There was no 911 they had to fend for themselves. First shots fired in the French Indian War was by George Washington a Young colonial officer who had the built Fort Necessity after they run the French and Iroquois back over the Canadian border. Pittsburgh's history is so so rich but you'd never know about it because we don't have that are against it seems to come out of places like Philadelphia New York and Boston. Why because we're blue color baby! Oh did I forget to mention that Bayer Pharmaceuticals North American headquarters it's in Pittsburgh as of I believe 1989. It's because when they were flying into greater Pitt International the staff from bear said it reminded him of Bavaria with are three river valleys. Carnegie Mellon University ranked in the top five engineering schools in the world. Has what some might claim to be the number one theater School in the world. Of course any of us from that town having any sense of History could write her own book of what we know. I just wish they didn't have three months of blasted snow and winter!

Pittsburgh was once the most prolific steel producing city in the world. From the entrance of the U.S. into WWII until VJ Day, Pittsburgh alone produced more steel than Germany, Italy, and Japan combined during the same time.
The Steelers are also what I would call a truly global franchise. When I was serving in Korea, I found a Steeler bar in Seoul. When I was in Heidelberg, an Irish themed pub would be open at 3 in the morning to put Steeler games on TV for a packed house. In Iraq, there was a large group of us that would gather to watch Steeler games and we had people from all over the U.S. as well as from our allies.
It's called the Terrible Towel because Myron Cope, famed Steelers color commentator (who would also make a fun reaction video, by the way) called it that back in the early 70s. He donated all of the money from that to a local home for mentally disabled people and left them the rights in his will.

There was a "Mom&Pop" steel shop in just about every town over forty-thousand population. A large portion of local ethenticity is Polish/German/Irish. They went from worst to best in a very short couple of years. I was a fan even when they were awful, just because they were from my town. Dan Rooney took over from his father, who really didn't care about winning. That happened around 1969. Dan and newly hired Head Coach Chuck Noll decided to build the team through the draft. They built a super dynasty and dominated in a decade where the competition included 3 other powerhouse teams: the Raiders, Dolphins, and Cowboys. What a decade! The team has the highest winning percentage since the merger of the two leagues, the AFL and the NFL. It's really been exciting to have witnessed the transformation of the team from perennial losers to perennial competitors.
Pittsburgh was the steel capital of the world at one time. Its nickname is "The Steel City".

Only city of its nature New York post about having five boroughs. Pittsburgh is the only city of its nature in this country. It is made up of 17 townships and boroughs. And it's diversity I believe truly makes Pittsburgh the first Melting Pot in this country and I'm not talking about just the steel every pun intended. Pittsburgh Steelers had the first black quarterback Joe Gilliam. Also look with the rooneys have done in terms of making sure that the NFL gives minorities a shot at coaching positions. My mother's father was Irish her mother Italian. My father's family were from Pilsen Czechoslovakia and they were Jews. I never experienced or ever saw any racism when I was growing up in that City. The first racism I experienced was after I join the service a 1971. You notice they're not burning in Pittsburgh are they?! I now live in Tulsa and they'll be no burning here either. Why here's a perfect example why the Democrats in Pittsburgh are not left extremist and the Republicans in Tulsa are not extremists. Now I know somebody's going to bring up 1921 and the race riots in Tulsa but hey guess what I was born in 1953 and I don't know anyone who was involved with that crap Norwood I condone it. Growing up in Pittsburgh with a guy like mr. Rogers who taught people how to respect themselves so that they can respect others. If it weren't for those blasted winters I would live there now. My bones can't handle that cold anymore. Though I live in Tulsa, my heart will always be in Pittsburgh. Go Steeler Nation.

The best team ever! ❤️🌎❤️ You mentioned the Irish, yep. The Rooney family has owned the Steelers sense 1932/1933 Dan Rooney was the American ambassador to Ireland under the Obama administration. God rest your soul ❤️💔❤️ Mr Rooney. The Steelers and the green bay Packers are the only two teams without cheerleaders. That my friend is class! Go Steelers!

"You just go and lay your hand /
On a Pittsburgh Steelers' fan /
And I think you're gonna finally understand" - "In America", Charlie Daniels Band, 1980, written just months after the Steelers dominated the league for a decade. This is how big the Super Steelers were 50 years ago, and why Pittsburghers wear Steeler jerseys to work on Friday for a Sunday game.

I mean is there ever a time Steeler attire isn't acceptable in Pittsburgh, I've heard it said people will wear Steeler gear to weddings, funerals, job interviews and everything in between

    As a Pittsburgh native...
    It is pronounced "Turrrrrble Towl."
And it is specifically because of the "Stihlers" fans' awareness of the local dialect (Pittsburghese) that it becomes an inside joke that makes it even more powerful.
I don't know if he started it, but he made it famous... Myron Cope was a long time Pittsburgh Sports Caster on Radio. He sounded like everybody's Uncle from Pittsburgh.

I'm from Pittsburgh and had season tickets till I moved away a while back. I still get goosebumps over so many of the historic moments and stadium crowds. RENEGADE is played in the 4th quarter to pump up the defense and crowd. It's an undescribeable feeling. GOOSEBUMPS

If you want to make a memory - go to Pittsburgh, eat some pierogi's and a Primanti Bros. sandwich [both available at the stadium] and see them when they play either Cleveland, Cincinati or if you can get tickets when they play Baltimore. Then do a video and tell us how it compares to your football games.
If they play Styx's Renegade you will never forget it!
    FYI - I'm a Yinzer.
