    Agree completely with others that mentioned the Alan Snodgrass set up, it works and does away with blade drift. I have a Walker Turner bandsaw from the 40s and could not get the drift out of it for resawing. Tried Alan's method and added a blade from Timber Wolf and it now cuts dead straight. Not to take anything away from Brian's video it's well done!

    nice fence. You wont have drift if you will set up the band saw properly. adjust the blade so the gullet of the blade is running in the center of the upper wheel. (look for Alan Snodgrass band saw set up here on you tube). After I watched his video and set up my 14" band saw up like he instructed, I didn't have blade drift anymore

    • @GarageWoodworks
      @GarageWoodworks  8 лет назад

      Only if it were that easy. Bandsaw manufacturers wouldn't need to sell fences that adjust for drift. Manufacturers wouldn't sell after market fences that adjust for drift either. Fact is there are multiple factors that can cause drift, like bad tired, dull blade, damaged blade, bad guides, improperly set guides. Most often drift can never be completely eliminated. Adjusting for drift at the fence causes no problems. Why worry about it?

    • @rwe2156
      @rwe2156 7 лет назад +1

      GW is right. What Snograss demonstrates on a PM does not apply to all brands. Not all bandsaws can you eliminate drift for a couple reasons 1) some saw are designed with non-coplanar wheels and 2) some wheels like the Rikon have flat tires. That is why BS fences are built to adjust for drift and the manuals tell you too. It is much simpler to adjust the fence.

    have any tips for resawing large amounts of wood? going to be residing my house with Western red cedar+ douglas fir I've cut with an alaskan mill. 10' long, 6x6 beams cut into boards. looking to buy a 17"grizzly saw, never used one though. thanks for the video friend! really appreciate the work you do :-)

    Watch the video ... How to eliminate drift from your bandsaw... from Fine wood working... I always had drift with my bandsaws... after watching the video ... I went to the shop and checked my tables, and sure enough they were both out... adjusted them as seen in video... and both bandsaws now cut true using the fence... never even gave it a second thought about my tables... just accepted the concept that all bandsaws have drift...

    Why do so many people clamp a fence on skew to "fix for blade drift"? just adjust the tracking. Its so simple

  • @zippo123ist
    @zippo123ist 4 года назад

    should use plywood for the fence.solid timber will bow again

  • @MrBobWingard
    @MrBobWingard 8 лет назад +1

    I too have become a follower of Alex Snodgrass' method of alignment ... and, it works very well, but as you say, if a blade has bad teeth on one side, it is going to "pull", and THAT will need to either mean repairing/replacing the blade or setting the drift angle. It is still wise to align the saw so the gullet of the teeth is running dead-center on the tire. It keeps the blade running true in another respect ... it the blade is running too far fore or aft, the tension coupled with the misalignment will cause the blade to run in a very shallow funnel shape as it will be tensioned differently front to back.

    Is there a special reason you used a board of hardwood instead of high quality plywood like baltic birch? Because the hardwood is more likely to expand and shrink by seasons when plywood stays more steady. For an application like a fence which should stay fixed all the time I would consider using baltic wirch plywood instead.

    • @GarageWoodworks

      I used what I had available. I have an endless supply of hardwood. If it gets out of flat, I can flatten it lickity split or replace it.

      Great. As you grow and mature in life you’ll eventually realize that not everyone likes the same music. And it will eventually dawn on you that it’s not possible to completely please a crowd of people with a song selection or two. When this happens, please return here and let me know so that we can discuss it.

    Common knowledge -the Alan Snodgrass setup method will do away with that unwanted blade drift and have your saw cutting straight the way it is supposed to. Try it.

    What a great fence. I have a 76 year old Power King bandsaw that my dad gave me. I rebuilt it and had a bit of drift. I tried everything to fix it, more tension, less tension, new bearing guides, new blades, everything! I saw a demo with an guy named Alex Snodgrass and learned a lot. Went home and did everything he said to do on my saw and this thing cuts like you wouldn't believe! Straight as an arrow! I didn't have the money to buy his guides but he helped me anyway. Don't knock it till you try it.

    • @GarageWoodworks

  • @akiriwas
    @akiriwas 8 лет назад

    Brian, whats the advantage of using the hardwood there as opposed to more plywood? I usually see jigs made entirely of plywood to reduce wood movement. Just curious. Great fence, the results speak for themselves.

    • @GarageWoodworks
      @GarageWoodworks  8 лет назад

      I wanted a really flat surface for the main fence and plywood isn't always going to be flat (and you can't face joint it). Hardwood shines here because I can use my jointer to get a super flat surface. If it ever warps over time, I can unscrew it and re-face joint it. Thanks for the comment!

    This video has single handedly stopped me getting rid of my old bandsaw! I thought it was only mine that drifted that much but I'm glad to see that I'm wrong! Definitely going to sort out the drift by making one myself, and give my rather sad looking, dusty and underused Kity 613 a new lease of life! Excellent work, thanks so much for putting this video out!

    • @GarageWoodworks
      @GarageWoodworks  8 лет назад +1

      +notbad88 Thank you. I think drift is the result of multiple factors - quality of blade, quality/condition of tires, and where the blade is positioned on the wheel (peak of crown or off to one side). Instead of goofing with these parameters, I think it makes the most sense to just adjust for drift. It's nothing to be ashamed of :)

    great video nice jig. but have to say that was a lot of drift you have... maybee you should trie a other blade, then i rip i use one there is ca. 1,2 inch wide. some time ago i had to rip 4 8 feet 5x5 from corner to corner in 45 degrace. i made a jig for it and just clamp it to my normal fence. had no problem with drift.

    • @GarageWoodworks
      @GarageWoodworks  8 лет назад

      If drift can be accommodated by adjusting for it, then why worry about it? Drift when accommodated for presents no problems. Let's not make this into a problem that doesn't exist.

    • @GarageWoodworks
      @GarageWoodworks  8 лет назад

      I was waiting for this comment. I've never had a problem jointing plywood and never damaged my knives doing this. This might have been propagated by those using poor quality knives? I don't know.

    • @KSFWG
      @KSFWG 8 лет назад

      +GarageWoodworks I've often thought that another reason for that might be a too aggressive cut at the jointer.
