This game is absolutely the most brutally difficult thing I have ever played. Haven't even passed the second level. It's what happens if you take D&D, strip it down to it's barest essentials, and put it in the hands of a completely sadistic DM.
ShelltoonTV1 maybe I should though I find it very incredible that it could actually be even HARDER than the hardest game ever. How's ol' Drew Pickles doing?
This WAS the Demon/Dark Souls of the 80's...this game was hard ass hell when it came out. I remember many sleepless nights staying up playing this game.
Having played both, I'd disagree. Dark Souls was difficult, but gave you the hints, skills, and mechanics you needed to get just a little better every time and come out the stronger for it. It had a clear flow and progression and made sense. The Immortal was arbitrarily hard with near-nonsensical "puzzles" that sometimes came down to trying random things and seeing it it worked, compounded by the picky positioning and kludgy controls. There's absolutely no comparison - The Immortal was a terrible game both from a design perspective and from a gameplay perspective.
+Hecatonchires however it had undeniable charm. Being so left in the dark in this deadly mysterious unforgiving dungeon was so fascinating in a strange way. At least to me. Also the music, graphics, story and animation combined for such an amazing experience especially at the time and to this day in my opinion.
@Robi-Wan Shinobi Completely agree. The difficulty that drives so many people away is what made the game awesome for me. It rewards patience and persistence. Also, with unlimited continues on every level it's not all that unforgiving. It's ok for a game to alienate some people in exchange for more complex problem solving; not every game needs to be for a general audience.
This game is pure gold. Just seeing the first minutes makes me want to replay it so bad. I hope there is going to be a remake or a game with similar aesthetics some fine day. Not even Dark Souls gives me such eerie, dark fantasy vibes as this game's overall design. Absolutely brilliant work, that was far ahead of its time imho.
Honestly, this game is rather short once you know what you are doing. The game play, story, traps, monsters, top down view, and each level having almost completly different puzzles are perfect in this game. This game has so much potential. I wish game developers would pick up on this games mechanics and make another like it. It doesn't need a sequel or anything changed, maybe some updated graphix and sound, keep the core gameplay mechanics and I know I'd love it.
Bloody hard game but you get a real sense of achievement every time you survive to the next level! The final boss battle is pretty epic, there's not many games that can compete with the tension of that duel.
The NES version does appear to have more music samples but the quality is low by comparison. Also while it has music during the fight scenes, the music doesn't quite match the pace of the action. Whether that's better or worse than no music on the Sega, is up to the individual. I feel overall the Sega version music gives this games the dark feeling it was supposed to have. NES is still a great game though.
After about a year of playing I was able to get to the dragon by myself, but I never survived all 6 uses of the blink spell. Glad I got to finally see what Sonic and Magnetic Hands scrolls were supposed to be used for.
Man this game is tough. I beat it as a kid, but phew, didn't realize how hard it is. Especially loved the spider and how it comes out one hole, then the other. Superb
As kid i remember i was really scared by this game, very creapy for 1991! Now at 42 it looks different 😅, but it could really be a good base for a new development for ps4! 🍻🇮🇹 bye from Italy
i cant believe this game is THAT short, i am absolutely shocked by that, i was sure that the place was a labyrinth of death and despair, requiring a couple hours if not a whole day, so yeah my mind is blown that this game can be beat in under an hour.
You don't have to tell me. Back in the day a friend of my brother had this version of the game while we had the nes version.Through the haze of nostalgia I recall hours of epic adventure but after watching this I know I was just epically dying for hours.
I'd imagine now you can just read a faq and off you go but playing it blind sure was fun. Then you'd finish it and that was that. I think I rented or borrowed this one a few times to solve it. I know I never owned it but I remember finishing it eventually.
For real the animations are really dope !! I was 6 yo the first time i put my hands on this game, and it was in english, as a little french boy i did not understand a thing.. But the vibe and the ambiance of the game is so cool, the sound design is cool, the visual too.. And the music fits perfectly, that's dark and shady.
Olive Roudoudou both the SNES and Genesis aren't detectives. So of course no body in the universe has a clue. Neither I have any clue what I'm talking about.
I had the NES version and it plagued my childhood. Never got to the final boss. Never seen this version before now. This is way better graphics wise, but I love the music for the NES version.
Me and my bro, 8th grade playing this for the first time. "Oh, shit! He cut the Goblin fucker in half!! 30min later, after that wore off,and the first room with the wall darts kept kicking our ass, and Makers kept coming ul through the floor, and eating us. "eh, fuck this noise"
This was an Atari 520 ST game originally. I remember when it came out around 1990. This looks like a direct port of that version. An early Diablo-like game.
I played this one so much that I actually mastered it completely, and I do NOT enjoy playing hard games in the slightest. I kept pushing on just to see what horrid death awaited the next monster to cross my path.
Tons of inventive ways to die in this game. The trolls will step on you when you shrink. Spiders inside a chest that you have to pour the alcohol on. You can even fall down a ladder if you go on the wrong side.
That games just have awesome death anims for both the ennemies and the player. I still find it funny that he can sleep causually right after skinning a troll. XD
Man...I finally got to see the game played out and the ending. Never could get past the first level. Would somtimes wait to long thinking and that ground worm would pop up and just eat me. Thanks for this video.
+igable82 I could get real far,to this room that had a ton of giant worms trying to get you,but my sega genesis would always cut off at that point or freeze. Guess my cartridge had some kind of glitch or something.
+fistof fury I hate it when that would happen. Had one other that the save system would not work. Would save and turn it off for the night only to see the save file gone in the morning.
Wow...completely forgot about this game. V difficult indeed - I don't think I was able to beat the Norlac to the whirlpool and was never able to complete it, now I have closure finally after all these years :)
7:51 is so strange. He comes across a guy who refuses to give up a gem and tells him to go away. In response, the wizard throws some "dust" into the air, and the guy does a complete 180, gives you the gem, gives you his blessing, and then the kicker: he pushes a button on the wall and disappears through a secret revolving door. That whole scenario must have been cooked up while on some dust.
Okay, but how do you explain the button pressing and the revolving wall. It's real weird and you know it. No rhyme, no reason. Hilarious, but weird ass.
one of my favorites when i was young.. i bought it based on the graphics on the package alone (the NES version though, so no death scenes but still fun)
The Genesis version is moody, atmospheric, and very well paced. The NES version is Immortal on speed. Way too action oriented and uptempo for my liking.
This game is absolutely the most brutally difficult thing I have ever played. Haven't even passed the second level. It's what happens if you take D&D, strip it down to it's barest essentials, and put it in the hands of a completely sadistic DM.
sozaj Try the NES version if you want to go even more sadistic.
ShelltoonTV1 maybe I should though I find it very incredible that it could actually be even HARDER than the hardest game ever. How's ol' Drew Pickles doing?
+ShelltoonTV1 why is the NES version harder?
More that it's a regular game of D&D, but the player is going solo in a scenario that's meant for a party.
@Danielle Smith ow the edge
Remember guys, _this game introduced fatalities before Mortal Kombat._
As well as introducing a giant worm before Dune II.
And the invisible monster before Amnesia: Dark Descent
and plot twist that you have been manipulated all along.

90s
electronic arts made the hardest games back in the day. this was no exception. this game was awesome though.
Not all of them, but most were hard. General Chaos and Rolo to the Rescue were not too difficult.
@@jeanjean59ful I was gonna bring up GC.
This game is pure gold. Just seeing the first minutes makes me want to replay it so bad. I hope there is going to be a remake or a game with similar aesthetics some fine day. Immortal logic : burn goblin to a crisp, pick up paper note from his ashes.
It's magical fire, it only burns hostile beings. Duh.
Great story, good writing and those death animations!
This is one of the classics from my youth.
I love how the Dragon at the end was like "Fuck are these guys doing?"
28:05 - Nothing like a nap next to a freshly killed corpse.
Such an epic short story.
Finally, I got to see the whole story!
This game is so suspenseful my hands are sweating just from watching this skilled LP.
ah the memories, I had this when it came out and I loved it
One the finest and hardest Genesis games I ever played. So much training to finish it.
Honestly, this game is rather short once you know what you are doing. This game is weirdly impressive even the Nes version is nice i love those violent death animations.
These other versions look better but the NES got the music right I think.
This is by far the best The Immortal version!
+P. H. G. F. I disagree. NES had cool battle music. :(
+P. H. G. F. Megadrive had the better graphics but NES had better music ;).
The NES version does appear to have more music samples but the quality is low by comparison. Also while it has music during the fight scenes, the music doesn't quite match the pace of the action. The original Amiga version blows all of the shitty console ports out of the water.
@@sperrin the comparison, is stupid. consoles, in that time, are more superior. and in this case, is a good port.
After about a year of playing I was able to get to the dragon by myself, but I never survived all 6 uses of the blink spell. Glad I got to finally see what Sonic and Magnetic Hands scrolls were supposed to be used for.
Awesome gameplay. 12:32 two trolls with one bomb.
Man this game is tough. I beat it as a kid, but phew, didn't realize how hard it is. Especially loved the spider and how it comes out one hole, then the other. Superb
What an awesome game! I like the story! Maybe difficult to play, but super fun to watch!
Jogo à frente do seu tempo. Pra mim é, um dos melhores do Mega Drive. Tenho o jogo completo do Sega Genesis até hoje.
Such awesome game! Its sound track is so well composed. It's deserves a faithfull remake this days.
The overall game style is fantasy, but MAN those finishing moves are metal as shit.
This is what RPG should look like, not fighting endless hordes of enemies.
With more svae state for die and retry !
As kid i remember i was really scared by this game, very creapy for 1991! Now at 42 it looks different 😅, but it could really be a good base for a new development for ps4! 🍻🇮🇹 bye from Italy
imagine a game like this with nowadays tech and totaly ramdom puzzles and enemies !
I remember playing this at my cousins house. I didn't really understand it but it was the most gruesome game I had ever played at the time.
i cant believe this game is THAT short, i am absolutely shocked by that, i was sure that the place was a labyrinth of death and despair, requiring a couple hours if not a whole day, so yeah my mind is blown that this game can be beat in under an hour.
Man, this game was a half hour long? Not exactly the epic quest I remember.
You don't have to tell me. Back in the day a friend of my brother had this version of the game while we had the nes version.Through the haze of nostalgia I recall hours of epic adventure but after watching this I know I was just epically dying for hours.

Only if you know everything you must do.
Holy shit, that's cool. It's like a Sega version of Diablo. I would have loved to have this when I was a kid, but sadly never heard of it.
For real the animations are really dope !! I was 6 yo the first time i put my hands on this game, and it was in english, as a little french boy i did not understand a thing.. i loved renting this game. So spooky, atmospheric and violent.
5:02, 1:25 Genesis did what Nintendo wouldn't dare. I never saw shit like that on my SNES as a kid, lol.
phobos2k2 Genesis does what nintendont.
SNES is what Genesisn’t
IcedFate Sega Megadrive got no clue what you’re talking about
Randy Butternubs SNES does what Genesisn't. That's all.
Olive Roudoudou both the SNES and Genesis aren't detectives. So of course no body in the universe has a clue.

Oh god, I remember replaying this game a bazillion times till I figured out what to do in every level.. hard as hell
This was an Atari 520 ST game originally. I remember when it came out around 1990. This looks like a direct port of that version. An early Diablo-like game.
this game use to scare me as a child.
Probably largely because of the box cover art?
Very enjoyable to watch, thank you :)
I played this one so much that I actually mastered it completely, and I do NOT enjoy playing hard games in the slightest. I kept pushing on just to see what horrid death awaited the next monster to cross my path.
Ah, the immortal. The game of a thousand deaths.
must be the predecessor to Diablo series
Tons of inventive ways to die in this game. The trolls will step on you when you shrink. Spiders inside a chest that you have to pour the alcohol on. You can even fall down a ladder if you go on the wrong side.

I remember thinking "OMG these graphics are amazing!" when this came out.
Western exclusive for the Switch online pass. I was beyond pumped on of the most fun titles on there!
Played it yesterday for the first time in 31 years. Still hard as hell

One of the greatest games ever!
probably one of the most hardest game ever on MD
Lol Dunric died at the beginning. Thank God for Mordamir that he had other apprentices. Or not :p
I'd loke to see this game remastered, with new gameplay.
Wow...completely forgot about this game. V difficult indeed - I don't think I was able to beat the Norlac to the whirlpool and was never able to complete it, now I have closure finally after all these years :)
'Twas a bad-ass game indeed, 'twas....
That worm room in level 5 is sadistic!
All Fatalities
1:24
5:02
13:35
17:33
apparently being a wizard means taking lots and lots of naps
The Immortal is Dark Souls' father.
Great game. This is far better than the nes version IMO. Creates a scary atmosphere
masochistic password system. those characters can barely be read
I liked the ending a lot. A good ending to a really nice, simple story. Except for-
GAME OVER
Play Again? [OK]
29:39 I like how there's a big black octopus just chillin' out.
Brill classic game, did a walkthrough of this about 2 years ago, still play it now.

the game has such great music
Sinister game...the programmers in 1991...in some nerd/creepy dungeon...old pc's...anciet times...true violently
Who said than you can't dance and fight at the same time?
AVGN Brought Me Here
When you pulled out that carpet, I had only one word in mind:
SQUADILAH!
that sound chip
Nice ending. Even old wizard have a girlfriend.
Thanks for uploading this classic.
10 years jesus lol
They don't even mention how hard you rock Ana's butt with your returned vigor at the end! damn you EA!
13:57
"Maybe there is something magical in this dungeon"
Yeah, no shit.
18:14 "Three rings around the triangle." Y yo creí que tenía que colocar los anillos en un órden especifico!
I have a 3 key ( a,b,c) mega drive controller on me and i cant get to the inventory. Why? Its sad xd
The Genesis version is moody, atmospheric, and very well paced. The NES version is Immortal on speed. Way too action oriented and uptempo for my liking.
Good and interesting....I like this style of game.!
I love this game
The nes and computer versions have a scenes at the start of level 8 where a goblin revives you but they left it out of the MD. WHy?
Man this game is like pre-Diablo in its way
Lol, the princess saves the hero this time, but Anita Sarkeesian would find a way to bitch about this game anyway ;)
I call ball**** on the worm room lol. The sensor was pinging high and the worm did not appear. 😂 "Walk without rhythm, it won't attract the worm."
That moment when you realize the first ever Let's Play was of an EA game.
tried getting into this one back in the day... couldnt... the end.
The music is driving me crazy
nicklong27 Yeah, It makes me tense to hear that game soundtrack
Masterpiece
Olha esse video Marcus Mota... :D
this game should be remade, it reminds me a lot of dark/demon souls
I came here from AVGN
demons/dark souls has successfully continued this tradition nicely
before Dark souls were cool! one of the hardest game of my life
How i get this game as a kid i dont know but i know i didnt get far in the game so ima watch this
you had to be using some cheats codes. if ya didn't then you are a genius
