The HUGE Mistake Jurgen Klopp Made Against Man United

  • For the second time this year, Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool failed to win at Old Trafford despite looking in total control. But this was a far cry from the total chaos of their FA Cup tie, and needed a disaster from Jarell Quansah to allow Manchester United back into the game.
However, while many may point the fingers at the young centre-back, Liverpool's real problem lay in a decision made prior to kick-off. Adam Clery looks at the game to see if this could be the mistake that costs Liverpool the league...

But when looking beyond numbers at the actual chances, he should have quite a few more. Nuñez, though, has more shots than anyone in the league, and isn't even close to the top scorer. Diaz as well has plenty of shots, and he isn't even in the top 20 of scorers. Liverpool really should be out of sight in this title race. Or at least they ought to be with 4 more points after wins v City and United. I don't watch too much beyond highlights but I saw those games. I'm sure there will be other dropped points through the season because of it.

Come to think of it, Konate had been ruled out for sometime leading up to his return in the Sheffield game.
Knowing Klopp, he was looking to play Konate to get minutes in his legs. Being an easy fixture and all he wanted maybe to get him into his stride against an easy opponent.
I definitely think had it not been for the knock he picked up in that game, he'd have featured against United. The CB pairing of him and VVD is the Boss's preferred CB pairing.

I think Klopp intended to play Konate, and while it was down to fitness issues that he didn't play, I think that's more because of the tackle on him in the Sheffield United game (which should have been a red card, by the way) as opposed to his usual problems.

    • @donahuetroy

Our wingers were in poor form in front of goal for awhile now. Their passing and decision-making for shots let us down. We're in a rut where we don't have any clear attack other than pass to the forward with seniority then live or die by their individual quality on the day. We used to cross, cut-back, overlap with someone ready to receive the ball, or at the far post ready for a tap-in.

  • @jeffreytsao5710
    @jeffreytsao5710 2 месяца назад +12

I believe Konate has made a pass or two that are similar to Quansah's mistake this season. The difference is (a) it wasn't Fernandes who received the ball then, (b) he got bailed out by other team members (Allison and VVD come to mind), and (c) occasionally he has the incredible pace to fix his own mistake.
TAA made a similar mistake at least twice this season, I think, one of which led to a goal (based on a vague memory).
Based on the ball's trajectory, and Quansah's passing, especially short passing, this season, I think he realized he was making a mistake as he was passing the ball (or was focusing on "don't pass it to Fernandes"), and as a result, hits it just right so it doesn't get anywhere near VVD and goes almost straight to Bruno

I think Klopp is looking at the games ahead also. AKA, the Europa league game mid-week vs. Atalanta. Klopp wants Konate to start that one for sure, and as you put it, Konate can’t do 2 games within a week’s space. So Konate starts vs. Sheffield United, and for the Europa league clash this coming Thursday. That leaves the CB option open for either Gomez or Quansah; with Gomez being more favourable in a more versitile role as he can play either position as fullback or as a CB. @FourFourTwo

We had something like 3.6 xg that game with the majority of it coming from the first half, salah had 2/3 good chances then nunez and szoboszlai had a couple it should’ve been 2-0 atleast at half time. His mistake should have been something to harass him about afterward, spoiling Kelleher's clean sheet and all in an otherwise easy win. But our front three were dismal. And wasn't it still 1-1 when Nunez crossed the ball to no one when Szobo was unguarded at the penalty spot? Also, anyone paying attention knew it was possible all three teams in the title race could win their final 8 games. It seemed likely to me. I hope I'm wrong about that, because Liverpool's not winning now unless both Arsenal and City also stumble.

This video entirely missed the mark.
    1. Quansah is him and deserved to start, had konate started they wouldve set up completely different. Klopp played to Quansah’s strength and he just made a mistake.
    2. If youre gonna blame anyone blame Nunez when he didnt pass it back to szobo on that counterattack, its a team effort, liverpool werent at their best.
    3. Saying casemiro blindly and luckily passed that overhead ball to mainoo is just plain wrong, if you watch it back, he scans, receives, and makes that pass happen.
    4. Gomez shouldve started over robertson, the way klopp set up works best when you have an inward fullback and robertson doesnt provide that. To me, klopp looks as if hes caught between two styles of play and neither robertson nor quansah flourish in this.

sh$t happens, even to experienced players. the first thing I thought of after Quansah's pass was Stevie G's slip at Chelsea due to a questionable pass. we're coming up on the 10-year anniversary of the slip that cost the Reds the title that year. hope it turns out different this year.

Many players have done the same previously. I remember Thiago doing it twice in 1 game not so long ago, and he's as experienced as it comes.
Too much of a microscope on defensive errors and not enough in the final third. We should have scored at least 5 i this game and been out of sight.

You could actually say that Virgil was at fault too. He saw the danger coming but failed to react to it. Instead of stepping up to challenge Bruno he stepped back and allowed him a free run at the ball.

I initially thought that, but I think Virgil pulled away to purposely make it look like the pass was even worse - because he didn’t want the other player even half tempted to make it (sending the danger)- but quansa didn’t read Virgil’s game, and rushed the pass anyway…

My guess as to why Klopp chose Quansah over Konate (and as you stated I do not really think this was a mistake) 2 points - Firstly as we are not the manager and he is trying to manage his players maybe...just maybe he has some more information that we do not like, oh i don't know, Konate is playing injured and Klopp was trying to use him for the games he knew he could rely on him for at say 60%???? This is a guess I do not know but I am guessing Klopp might.
Secondly, and again (I am no expert by any shakes) maybe....he used Quansah as he might be younger and fitter to deal with the likes of Garnacho, Hojland or Rashford especially if Konate is being managed due to his fitness.
I am still not sure this should be classed as a mistake by Klopp for having faith in good players whatever their age. For me Quansah has shown time and again he can be relied upon and considering the way he played after the mistake, I think Klopp is right.

I am usually a huge fan of the analysis by Adam and I agree that possibly Klopp could have figured a way to make Konate play in this match but this is the laziest analysis I've seen Adam do. Quansah made a mistake which led to a goal, true but what of the many poor decisions the attackers took when in promising positions. That should have been the focus of analysis but not the mistake because even if Quansah hadn't made the mistake,United were bound to score a goal anyway, that's football

I think Klopp just doesn’t have respect on Ten Hag. Both FA cup and this game, he fielded his best teams on the prior games. I shows he doesn’t take Ten Hag seriously. I think that’s a grave mistake. Ten Hag tactics are quite bad but Man Utd has quite a few skilled players who can show individual skills.

I think Klopp made a more serious mistake for the substitution. I can understand Szoboszlai being sub out for Elliot. But i can't fathom subbing out Endo for Jones. For the rest of the match, our form player MacAllister was completely isolated and have next to no impact on the game. Neither did Jones. Instead of controlling the match, our formation mirrored Man U: A giant hole in the middle like a donut. It's just 2 drunken man trading blind punches after that

The question should be why Klopp didn’t start Joe Gomez at center back if Konate couldn’t go. Quansah is the emergency backup to the backup to the backup, literally pulled from the academy after Konate and Joel matip we’re injured AND Joe Gomez was forced to cover at left back. Gomez should’ve been in at CB and Quansah back to the bench behind Konate. Oh well, Klopp has no one to blame but himself for leaving his best option on the bench

I largely agree pal with the analysis. Quansah's error is indeed 'dumb' but something you'd expect of someone with his inexperience. Indeed the emphasis lies on two key components here: 1) Was it worth playing Konate against the worst team in the league knowing his injury issues ? 2) Why do Liverpool continually not punish Manchester United this season whilst on top? We won't ever unravel the answers for both but in a title race coming down to bare margins and Salah himself admitting prior to the game 'we must win all of our games' this may be a moment in the season we look back to and say .. was it here that we lost it !

All good stuff but no one is looking at the things that are really odd - who else has a record this year against Liverpool of 1 draw and 2 wins out of 3 games? How is it that MU are conceding huge XG and shots at goal every week but shots on target are very close week on week (7-5 on target last game, for example)? Would MU have this record if they set up as they did in 2022-23 and as any sensible analyst would want, especially in midfield?
Assuming the coach is not a total moron (and his record suggests he isn't), then what is the method, what is the reason?
I don't have the expertise but each time analysts focus on the obvious (donut in midfield, pressing structure, blah blah blah) they are skirting around the bits that are really strange and that might actually form part of the answer.

I'm sure Adam would be the first to say that all the tactical stuff is fine but it ultimately came down to individual performances. Salah & Nunez missed a metric tonne of chances & the young lad Quansah made a young lad's mistake. If you played that game again with the teams setting up exactly the same way, Liverpool would win by 3 or 4 goals.
