    Fun Fact: In the original novel titled "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" by L. Frank Baum, Glinda the Good Witch of the South and The Good Witch of North were two separate characters. For this movie, the filmmakers combined the two characters together in order to save time for the movie.

    • @MaskedMan66
      @MaskedMan66 5 лет назад +14

      Not to save time, just to simplify the story. And audiences just figured that in this version of Oz, Tattypoo must be the Good Witch of the South.

      I saw it the first time it was ever on TV. That was back in the late '50s. Big event. My parents had seen the movie itself when it was in the theaters back in the late '30s. My old man told me the first half of the movie was in black and white, the second half was in color. I watched the movie intently, waiting for it to turn to color. It never did. I complained to my dad who then tried to explain that as our TV was a black & white model we could not see the color - but it was there. I didn't understand his reasoning and it wasn't until I was older I put it all together. I never saw color TV until '67 when my grandparents bought a color model. It was amazing. I was in my 20s before I owned one myself. That was in the early '70s. They simply weren't that common back then.

    A wonderful story:
    Not long after seeing The Wizard of Oz, a little girl named Natalie Norris fell ill and was hospitalized. Her mother wrote to MGM and relayed her daughter's wish that she could get a visit from Dorothy. They called Judy, who was of course delighted to do it, and sent Natalie a letter telling her that they had a date. She wanted to come in full Dorothy kit, but by that time everything had been put away in storage, so Judy wore a simple frock and her own short hair, and Natalie didn't mind a bit. Judy chatted with her a while and even sang "Over the Rainbow" to her, bringing Natalie's mother to tears. Later, Natalie showed rapid improvement, and not only recovered, but later in life became a singer herself!

    I still wonder if most of the Oz characters are suppose to be alternative personas of the people Dorothy knew (at least in the movie version), who is Glinda's counterpart suppose to be?
    I would say she might be a representation of Dorothy's (possibly dead) mother, but there were no hints about the existence of Dorothy's parents or their whereabouts (not even pictures of them).

    • @MaskedMan66

      Most of the people Dorothy encounters in Oz are just made up out of whole cloth in her imagination; only a relative few of them are based on people she knows.

    • @kenaldri4915
      @kenaldri4915 3 года назад +1

      @@MaskedMan66 if you think about it, few of the people Dorothy encountered had speaking parts. The wizard, doorman and coachman were all the same guy she met with the crystal ball before the twister (Frank Morgan). Other than those characters, the wicked witch of the west, a few munchkins or palace guards, and Dorothy's companions, only Glinda had a speaking part in Oz. Glinda might have represented her Aunt, but there are no obvious clues. But Glinda was the only one who knew how to get Dorothy back to Kansas, something Auntie Em wanted more than anything. So maybe she was an agent sent by her, or the voice of her conscious.

      @@kenaldri4915 Many Munchkins spoke and sang, as did many of the Emerald City Citizens (such as Jellia Jamb and the other personnel at the Wash & Brush Up), and of course the Winkie Captain and his men, not forgetting the Trees.
      Nobody in Oz was based on either of Dorothy's relatives.

    • @kenaldri4915
      @kenaldri4915 3 года назад

      @@MaskedMan66 By "speaking part" I was referring to those that had more than a few lines (not including singers) Perhaps it was a poor choice of words. "Principal or major characters" is what I meant and would have been what the OP meant also, since there were only six candidates (not including Dorothy and Toto) available from Kansas. Not enough to go around. I certainly wouldnt expect trees and munchkins to be modeled after anyone.

      @@MaskedMan66 I googled a theatre production of the Wizard of Oz where Auntie Em doubles as Glinda. Another source claims Auntie Em was to double as Glinda in the movie but they cast a different actress instead. I'm guessing since Glinda is required by the plot to be a beautiful witch, Clara Blandick didn't quite fit the mold
