Before i started watching your channel i knew absolutely NOTHING about Greenlandic language and culture. Thank you so much for sharing with us! I especially love hearing you speak Greenlandic and I enjoy practicing saying the words and sounfs.
These videos have really opened my eyes. In school back a very long time ago before most people were born, we were taught that Greenland was a territory of Denmark that nobody cared about because it was a deserted sheet of solid ice. I have learned so much in the last few weeks. You are doing Greenland a great service making people aware of such a wonderful and interesting place. 🙂👍🏻☮️
I’m from Texas and no, I’ve never known there were Danish names lol. We use the Greenlandic names here, I was always taught the capital was “Nuuk” but it’s interesting to learn that there were Danish names for these towns.
@@paulhudson8725 Ah, that makes sense then lol. I was in school in the 90’s. As much as some people online for some reason say Americans don’t learn geography, we had a capitals test for countries and states when I was 10. Nuuk always stood out to me because I thought the spelling was “cool” lol. I adore Q for teaching us more about their culture and language. It’s so interesting!
I had never ever heard the Danish names for your towns. Although I'm from Germany, a neighboring country. Sadly, we know very little about Danmark, let alone Greenland. So thank you very very much for your interesting videos. I always love watching them. ❤
The great thing is almost everything I know about Greenland I've learned from you Q. The bad thing is we learned almost nothing about Greenland other than the location and shape in any of my classes growing up.
I love ypur Videos. Its so interesting to get all those Information about your culture and your language. Love and light to the greenlandish people from germany❤
Thank you! It sounds like music! I'm also from a colonized people hoping to reclaim our language! We are perceived as "white". So recognization is complicated.
Thank you so much for sharing your culture and country with us. Like many of your viewers I know very little about it but seeing your joy makes me want to find out more!
Thanks Q😊 love your channel watched the 55😊 l am from Jamaica and learned about Greenland in geography and always wanted to visit Greenland & Arctic circle, now l know more!🎉
It changed quite a while ago. I grew up in Denmark learning Greenlandic names. So can be confusing talking about cities in Greenland with someone from a older generation.
In my country, England, we are too busy worrying about illegal immigrants coming to our country and stabbing our children to even bother thinking about Greenlandic town names.
Greenlands administration was almost entirely run by Danes up until the 2010s. Not that it was some colonial thing. There simply just wasnt that many of us Greenlanders that had University degrees that could fill the role. Most Greenlanders that get University degrees chose to stay in mainland Denmark.
I am from Colombia and I learnt from maps and history books the name of Nuuk as capital of Greenland and never the other variant. Even though, it's still interesting the fact that those names ever existed and were implemented 😮 best regards 🎉
Oh wow, I live close by and never realized that's what it was. I'd seen Godthåb only from an old version of a boardgame called Weltreise, printed in West Germany. So many historical easter eggs are left in that game.
Your channel is amazing! I just recently sailed along the east coast of Greenland and visited Ittoqqortoormiit; it was all so beautiful. I’ve been watching all your videos since I got back, they’re great! I can’t wait to visit again!
Hi, i really appreciate your posts. I find it very interesting that many of the names are so similar to our provinces here in Canada I look fwd to learning more about Greenland. Take care. Blessings & hugs❤
I love that smaller language families are starting to get bigger international followings! It really helps for language preservation and revival. I'm always so sad to think of how many beautiful and once proud languages have been lost due to colonization. Keep educating and the amazing work you do!
You expanded my whole view of Greenland, on the map it was just a piece of ice. But the language, the inuit culture, the beauty and the content you share shed a different perspective to 🇬🇱
I'm 39 and have always known the capital as Nuuk. I didn't realise there were Danish names. By the way thank you for this channel - I'm learning so much! ❤
Wow! It makes me happy to read yall were able to reclaim the name of your cities. I wish more countries had the opportunity to do that. It’s always so interesting to visit a country where colonizers gave it a name but the citizens call it something different (ex: Antigua).
I love when you say the names tbh it sounds satisfying 🤭 thanks for sharing my assessors are from Sisimut atleast I think 🤔 bc that we’re my dad is from anyways goodbye! 😄
Are there videos for learning how to pronounce the spelling in Greenlandic? Bc I would rlly love to be able to read and say the words even if I don’t know what they mean
Growing up in Canada I remember mapmakers being indecisive on which language to prioritize. The country was labelled "Greenland (Kalaallit Nunaat)" but the capital was "Nuuk (Godthåb)". I barely recall any other towns even appearing on maps, except I remember seeing Qaqortoq and wondering how you would even say that. 😅 I definitely don't recall the Danish names for other towns ever appearing though.
Hi Q! Just wanted to say thanks for sharing Greenland with us. The beauty of Greenland, its people and its culture is undeniable and it's now one of my dream travel destinations. ❤ I look forward to your videos always - you are a beacon of light and positivity. Thank you!
Greenland is one of the places on my bucket list. I want to visit during both the seasons. And i want to try local food, interact with local people and learn about your local culture.
Just as everyone else has said, I love learning about other cultures! We are all so much more similar than different, even when we use different words! ❤
I love languages and linguistics, so listening to you effortlessly pronounce those 17 Greenlandic names in a row was so cool!! The double L sound isn't really hard for me to pronounce, but the Q is much more difficult for me. I can pronounce it on its own, but once its in a word, forget about it 😂 I also have trouble pronouncing the long vowels in unstressed syllables. Maybe one day I'll be better at it!
The Danish names are actually the original ones, as all of these towns were founded as colonial trade post. Kalaallisut wasn’t a written language until much later, so it’s hard to know how old the Kalaallisut names are. Some of them might be older, but were in that case an existing name for the area, not the town itself. But in any case I think it makes sense for the towns to have names that fit to the current inhabitants :)
@@greenleaf8226 First of all I am just stating a very uncontroversial fact. Yes, it was very colonialistic of Denmark-Norway in the 18th century to name their town Godthåb when they founded it, and not ask the local population what they called the place, but that still makes Godthåb the original name. I don’t see how this is controversial. But does that mean I think we should call it Godthåb still? Absolutely not! It shouldn’t have been named something in another language in the first place, but that’s colonialism… And exactly why do you feel qualified to judge that, as I am guessing you are neither Inuit nor Danish speaking Greenlandic nor Danish who are really the 3 groups this debate concerns? The Inuit are perfectly capable of raising these issues themselves, and it really is not an issue. Did Q ever say that the Greenlandic names were oldest, or that she was annoyed that some old people in Denmark still use Danish names? No she didn’t. I really don’t think she or most other Greenlanders care. What matters, and what the debate is actually about is the official names. Before when Kalaallisut and Danish were both official languages of Greenland, both names were co-official. But now Danish is no longer an official language in Greenland, and therefore the Danish town names are no longer official. All I’m reading from you is predictable misguided political correctness where issues in other former colonies are wrongly projected onto context where they don’t belong. I think you’ll have problems finding even Danish speaking Greenlanders advocating for the old Danish names in official use. It’s a non-issue. But saying that they have “returned to their original names” would be misinformation. History is history even if it’s inconvenient to a narrative. The only debate you will encounter occasionally is whether Denmark should use the Greenlandic names officially or not, where some (mainly) conservatives think the old Danish names should be used when referring to the towns in Danish. I honestly couldn’t care less and I know most of the towns by their Greenlandic name only, and I don’t get why anyone cares really. What some people care about is whether Danish should still be an official language in Greenland, since it’s the main language of a significant minority especially in and around Nuuk. Many of which are born and raised in Greenland. It is a classical issue in many post colonial countries. Since I’m neither Inuit nor Danish speaking Greenlandic I don’t have an opinion on this either as I really don’t think it’s my discussion.
