I was fortunate enough to catch perform in Nashville in 1988. Leo Kottke opened. One of the best shows I have been blessed to see.

of all the Windham Hill artists I wanted to see, I only got to see one - Michael. in Chapel Hill, NC, maybe 1989 - - - no one else on Earth like this man. It was a gift to have him for the time we did.

Excellent. I had the great privilege of spending time with Michael a few weeks prior to his passing. I received him at the airport in Houston on his Oracle tour in October 1997. We spent time in his hotel room talking (& smokin' out) and he made me this fantastic apple/ginger juice (he traveled with a juicer).
Around that time the G3 tour was coming through Houston featuring Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson & Adrian Legg as the acoustic opener. Michael told me he was offered the opening slot of that tour, but he turned it down because they would not let him headline.
We also discussed Pat Martino’s album ‘All Sides Now’ which Michael was featured on. Michael told me he’d had Joe Satriani (also on that CD) and Pat Martino at his home studio for some recording sessions prior to the release of that album.
In December 1997, I remember sitting in my office and the secretary walking up to my desk and handing me a fax from Michael’s agency SRO Artists. I was deeply saddened when I read the fax announcing Micheal’s passing. I immediately left work, went home, and played guitar to honor Michael and drown out my sorrow.
I was incredibly moved by Michael during our brief meeting. I’m grateful for his presence then and now

    Gone too soon😢
First time I saw Michael live was at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival in '95, then saw him again twice in Mancos, Colorado (near Mesa Verde Nat'l Park) in '96. He played two nights in a row at a place called The Millwood Junction Restaurant (now closed)... I sat front and center first night, second row second night...wow!!!!❤🙏

Thank you for posting this! This is surprisingly hard to find online. There's very little footage of Michael Hedges playing, in general, so it's much appreciated.

Appreciate it. Be sure to check out the other Hedges footage I have posted - the VH1 stuff is great. I feel extremely fortunate to have been an 'early adopter' of Mr. Hedges and saw him several times live. Still have my Taproot shirt purchased at a show and the Live On The Double Planet poster I snagged from the wall at a show. Amazing talent.

Aerial Boundaries starting at 16:05 is an absolute masterpiece. Michael Hedges was a brilliant composer as well as being a guitar wizard-he’s in the same league as Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen in my book.

I often think how grateful I was to have seen MH live a dozen times or so. I also wonder what he would be doing musically today had he not left us so young. Loved those Windham Hills days, so many talented musicians that lead to such a variety of genres I’ve explored over the years. Thanks Windham Hill!

Thank you. If you look around the world today you will see some of the most amazing guitarists. And many of them are heavily influenced by what Michael Hedges opened up for the world of guitar. It’s maybe a little bit frightening the level at which this man functioned; beyond anything ever seen before in the history of guitar. It’s hard to remember that he is gone. But the change he brought to the face of guitar will remain.

The second time I met Michael I asked him to sign my jean jacket. Goofy, but I had some good things on there. It had a Union Jack flag layered in cloth strips with a The Who patch in the middle. He signed it: Pete's my Fave. I love that. Wasn't expecting ii.

Hedges' incredible guitar playing was only equaled by his incredible voice. "The Woman of the World." WOW!!! Michael, why were you driving so carelessly on the Willits/Fort Bragg highway that you went over the side, and ended your life so tragically?

    • @jkro30a

It was my favorite stretch of road in northern CA when I lived there...highway 20, a twisty smooth wonderful road through the redwoods. When I heard he died there it was both heartbreaking and in some weird way almost understandable. Best motorcycle ride in the area. It was worth the highway 101 slog just to get there. I was devastated when I heard the news about Michael. I was all in on his genius. Those early WH artists were wonderful...MH, Liz Story, George Winston, Alex DeGrassi, David Qualey, Shadowfax, Michael Manring. SO much instrumental greatness there.
