  • City leaders in Springfield, Massachusetts, started a project to calm State Street, one of the city’s most dangerous places for walkers and bikers. Needless deaths on State Street caused by poor street design near the public library were the central subject of Strong Towns’ Charles Marohn’s book, Confessions of a Recovering Engineer.

"Springfield" without saying MA could be in 50/50 states 😂

True. But most Springfields are not even mid-sized cities. So Springfield, MA is probably only reasonably confused with Missouri, Illinois, or Ohio.
Of those, Springfield MA is the oldest, most populous, and most prominent.

Good start. Although don't depend on plastic cones/bollards for too long as people drive over them.

Okay, bollards (and I do mean, bollards, not plastic vertical paint bollards, but "made out of concrete and/or steel" bollards) are needed. A dedicated crossing point with zebra lines, raised footpath and traffic lights. If the road is particularly wide, there needs to be an "island" in the middle. Encourage the building of protected bicycle lanes as well. This should be done throughout the city. Chicanes! (come on, American roads are wide enough to install them, you can even pretty them up with vegetation!)

People still look like they’re hauling ass, plus a blocked bike lane. Still glad something happening

Chuck, Thank you for your lifelong, tireless leadership. I’ve watched all your videos from SIDTV onward. Also a Strong Towns member. Great step for Springfield. Glad we have you to help guide our cities and towns in need of these strong town principles. Keep it up! Cheers

It takes a whole book to fix one street in a small city.

This video seems pretty general. If you are going to name a specific site and show us how it was improved, how about giving us some actual examples with numbers? Showing me traffic cones did not utilize the potential of video.

Another one dead? Oh man. In other countries that would have probably been made into a 20mph street the moment someone realized the parking lot was across the street.
On the other hand the temporary thing to try out stuff would probably not happen. I would like to see a "map" view of the end result compared to the old design.

Whats the fatalities on bike lanes? Are they lobbied for by Asphalt companies? Also, we have pedestrian walks to the beach. Seniors get ran over frequently.

How about, Drivers follow existing laws! How about the Police give out more tickets to bad drivers! How about the courts stop slapping people on the wrist. How about humans take their minds out of the gutter and actually start showing some respect to one another. Hmmmmm. Its not the streets and the buildings, it the people! Change the people!
