Nice demo and appreciate the honesty on the snare and heads. Yes, I've been looking for a true vintage jazz sound and of course Gretsch is historical with that kind of projection, So finally purchased one that was a bit of an investment but well worth it. Don't know when I'll come across another one at that price. However, prior to getting the Gretsch I did purchase a Sonor 18" set and am satisfied with it as now my second jazz set with the exception that it handles medium rock venues pretty good to which the Gretsch jazz set don't. In fact, when really hitting the Sonor snare while playing rock, I found it choking towards the center but when played off-centered its fine. So for all round with a decent sound with rock music its the Sonor but as to real classic jazz its non other than my recent vintage buy. Thank you for a true and informative review.
Love the review. I personally love the tom holder and the bass drum claw hooks. The hardware is built like a tank. The hooks are cast and not stamped if I remember correcty. The claws are also rubber lined, which is nice.
why did he say the yamaha stage custom got better hardware? what are the cons of this kit as you see it today after having used it? I am looking for a kit to play funk and mix with other people's music genres but deliever a nice punch of funk into their music and have a kit that is not too large but still have a nice sound.... Do you think this kit might be the right one? thanks for getting back, is hard to decide as today stores have less and less kits in store for testing... have a Good Friday!
The tom holder has memory locks and the holder socket has a slot for the lock to prevent it from twisting. If the memory lock is not tight it will twist easier.
i bought this kit in white pearl about a year ago. All comments are correct. The snare was crap, so I sold it. I put Calftone/Reso7 on the toms, and Calftone EQ4s on both sides of bass drum. Tune batter higher than reso for all drums. Great bop kit.
