- Scotland could become the first UK nation to provide help for people with a terminal illness to end their own lives. A new assisted dying bill was introduced today, and supporters say the public mood is shifting in favour of a change in the law.
But those against it fear it could be dangerous for disabled people and vulnerable groups.

The funny thing is that you get prosecuted if you allow an animal to suffer. And yet, many are saying we should suffer ourselves. Having sat and watched my mum die, then 12 months later, I'm doing it again with my dad. I know for a fact they wouldn't have wanted us to see them in such a state. And I've told my children that if ever i get an incurable, painful condition that will kill me in a matter of months, i will end my own life just so they don't have to see me suffer. Theres ALOT that they need to put in place to ensure the vulnerable are not pressured into this. But im sure there are plenty out there who would rather go out on their terms.

I understand your perspective and I can see the pain involved in watching your elderly parents dying. I also appreciate your thoughts in asking for guarantees that no-one willed be forced into this in any way. There are ways people could be ‘encouraged’ to accept this including reducing care or medications to make a person comfortable and this could easily be seen by the powers that be as a way to ‘encourage’ people to agree to euthanasia. The problem I have is that there will never be a guarantee for all time. It all depends on which government comes into power at a given time. Eugenics has been around a very long time. I feel for you in your position and will support your right to say what you feel is right, just as I would anyone.
I support the right to die. Especually for elderly or sick people who've had enough and are in pain. Its a better choice than suicide or a life of suffering and torment.
Why did he bring that up regarding DNR, that's a whole different conversation, the two things are not linked.
But my religious belief is MUCH more important then your right not to endure an agonising and protracted death so I'm going to spend my (healthy) days dreaming up reasons to block this law.

@@danjames4086 First of all, just as in capital punishment cases guilt is sometimes mistaken, so in euthanasia cases Drs make mistakes- they tell people they will die in 6 months yet those people go on to live another couple of decades..
How does Switzerland do it? I haven't heard any complaints about this from there.

Since then it's been a bit of a horror show, where their state run healthcare service routinely pushes assisted dying on to vulnerable patients with long term conditions instead of trying to treat them, because it's the cheaper option...

Everyone has the right to live, but when living is no longer an option, when your quality of life is nearly 0 because of physical illnesses, you should have the right to end your suffering on your own terms. People shouldn't be forced to exist with no quality of life just to suffer in agony and die in the end anyway, just because of laws and opinions made by people who will never have to make that decision because they don't have a medical condition that forces them to make that decision.

I'm positive the diagnosis im getting next week from hospital tests is multiple sclerosis so the sooner the UK has assisted dieing the better. I saw the horrific slow death of my sister trapped as a prisoner inside her own body for years. I'll be at the head of the queue at the first clinic even if i have to migrate to Scotland.
I watched my dad suffer this option needs to be legal my dad would not have been able to agree to it , but others can . And the horrific tragedy he went through. One year later im still struggling with flashbacks of it all its left my head messed up

I am from the UK and have lived in Canada for over 40 years. In my case I live with multiple conditions one of which requires medication which costs the government $6,000 every 8 weeks. Half of my colon has been removed. I am in pain frequently. I have kidney failure and I am over 70 years of age. No medical or government official has ever suggested I think about ending my life. It is up to the individual to request it. I fully support this choice given to people in Canada since 2016.
People have always had to power to choose, it's called free will. You put that power in another's hand through the dark laws of the system, the system will use it for it's own purpose. Do not be betrayed by the spell binding words of the system and it's accomplishes.......

@@andrewhewson62 That proves you don't understand "free will." What I wrote could equally be the result of determinism, some combination of the two or something that nobody has thought of yet.
To prove "free will" (or determinism) exists you would need to go back in time, replay the same phenomenon with no knowledge of the future and see if something different happened - then do it again and again to see if the decision varies or not. Even then that wouldn't categorically prove free will exists, or not, only a statistical probability. Though it could potentially disprove absolute determinism.

Yes we should have the power to choose, this law would give us the power to choose to die peacefully rather than live in constant pain. Committing suicide is very very difficult mentally and physically, it's not as easy as people think it is
I agree that it can be problematic, people can be coerced into it and certain groups may be targeted and encouraged to make use of euthanasia etc but that doesn't mean it shouldn't exist. There are surgeons and police officers that abuse their power but that doesn't mean we do away with them completely

Chances are you will attempt suicide only to end up suffering more and surviving with even more health issues. There have even been people that have survived a shotgun blast to the face and had to live with pain and disfigurement instead of being able to die in peace
Assisted dying is nothing new. I was told that my Dad probably wouldn't last the day so I went to visit him in hospital that afternoon instead of the usual evening. He was unconscious so I just sat and held his hand. After a while I noticed the only tube attached to him was his bladder catheter, there was no intravenous drip, he was left to dehydrate to death.

The fact that one country takes things too far isn't indicative that the idea is bad in principle . We can learn from Canada's mistakes, and make our own system with sufficient safeguards that both enable dignity for the terminally sick AND the protection of the mentally and financially vulnerable. Simply appealing to the potential "slippery slope" is a lazy and pessimistic approach to a very complex and important ethical question.

Assisted murder they mean: Imagine all those elderly people approaching their twilight months/years feeling obliged to kill themselves because "They don't want to be a burden to family", "They want to leave a few quid for their funeral but are worried their savings are getting depleted on care", "They are felling depressed about their condition" and "Heartless or greedy family members are applying emotional pressure at the most vulnerable time to get them out the way".
People should not feel pressurised into killing themselves because of a lack of care or money but that is EXACTLY what will happen.
Governments will rub their hands with glee at the tax breaks they can offer their mates because of the money that can be saved from providing people with appropriate health services and care.
If pain at end of life is the issue then fund better palliative care and research.
It's not just the savings in health care. We know that the last few months of life are the most expensive, but think of the cumulative pension savings going forward.

To those co-opting the disabled community for these purposes: please don't. Because if you really cared about ableism and discrimination against disabled people, you'd know that we can both address the systemic cultural and societal inequities associated with disability *and* allow people who are terminally ill to have some dignity in their inevitable death. We don't have to pick one.
most types of disability wouldn't apply here - its only the final 6 months of a terminal, progressive illnesses, so at a stretch things like mnd or ms might apply, but the person must self administer the medication; so those conditions would need to be very fast progressing. There's also capacity checks which should protect people with extreme mental ill health, or learning disabilities - so coercion is much less likely

Nobody is forcing families to die. What you went through is terrible, and your care for your husband is admirable. However, some families want to relieve their loved ones from pain. If I was in chronic, untreatable pain, I would want to die. If someone in my family was in chronic pain and wanted to die, I would support them.
There is no one fit solution for all people. Some people don't prioritize the preservation of life over the suspension of agonising pain.

As things stand I am a drain on society in terms of not working due to medical conditions and pain, although there are things I can do but not at 32+ hours a week. Once this door is opened there is no going back and someday, irrespective of calls to the contrary today, a government could easily decide that all people who are disabled or unable to work or even those on unemployment benefits could be faced with mandatory euthanasia. There will be NO CHOICE in it then.
Getting support to the end isn't losing dignity. Please dont go down this route.

All terribly sad. I, personally, have no issue with the concept, save that one is asking another to commit murder. A point seldom raised i fear. My main objection is the political danger of state authorised euthanasia. It is, bluntly, a way of saving money. If any reader does not believe that this is a factor, then you , frankly, are in a fantasy world. Already the elderly receive a lower standard of treatment than do the young (to economise on drugs, time and money) . One doesn’t have to be too elderly either. The ability to ave euthanasia too is simply appalling. On top of that there is the problem of less that sympathetic next of kin making the decision. One can see it”Oh yes Doctor, uncle Frank wouldn’t want to be a burden, etc, etc….(by the way, we are his beneficiary’s)” the latter part, I suspect ,would not be mentioned.
As a medical acquaintance told me, he did not think it a good idea for a patient to call a doctor to assist if it was thought that he may recommend death. As he put it, he could see in his minds eye the curtains twitching at neighbours widows as he drove to see his client.
Aside from the legal actions that would inevitably flow from this, there is the further point of scientific research. Who will fund research into, say, incurable disease when there is no need?
Of course, there will be the objections that it must be the decision of the invalid etc etc, but, that will not be so in many cases. This change is fundamental and will be, gradually extended. Once the cat is out of the bag, does anyone have confidence in our government (using the term loosely) to contain it? Frankly if you do then you really are in fantasy land.
So, though one must have the utmost respect any sympathy for the suffering, on a balance of two evils this proposed change is so damaging that it it is ahead of the former by several lengths.
Your last sentence concludes your argument well, but the argument is a false dichotomy. The fact that gambling, drinking or even democracy can turn sour doesn't necessitate that these things always will turn sour. Yes, we have to be careful about government overreach, along with the other concerns you mention, and I don't think we're doing a good job at doing that in general. There is too little scepticism of governments, big tech, big business etc. There is too little care and respect for the elderly.
Some of your concerns are quite solvable, or not even real problems to begin with. The vast majority of people would pay for a cure for their 80-year-old dying parent, regardless of whether or not the NHS started refusing to continue to treat chronically ill patients over the age of 80. That there is incentive enough for research to proceed.
@@Dracoti I must wholeheartedly agree. I will not repeat the arguments I set out above, but, this is, I have no doubt, a method of saving money, hospital beds, drugs and ultimately pensions. There are no “safeguards” that could be legally built in. The licensing of state killing is something wholly alien to our system, but, once sanctioned it will extend, have no doubt.
At present there are some people who wish to die, but, those are limited. If this law were passed there would be very many who may feel under moral pressure to take that course . The aged , sick, parent who doesn’t want to see his child and grandchildren put into penury with care fees etc etc. ,or, simply relieving the burden of care for a surviving spouse. Once death is given as an option, then the pressures are magnified.

@@BillBally may I say, firstly, that you have my heartfelt sympathy for your sad condition, and my very best wishes for its treatment. I must add further, however, that we all may have our personal tragedies and they do not amount to rational argument . One cannot dismiss other , reasoned argument simply by pronouncing them “nonsensical “. Perhaps, you will forgive me, should that sound callous, perhaps you won’t, but, please accept that that is not my intention. There are many people, desperate to live who may be affected by this proposed legislation you must consider too.
Dracoti puts the the argument succinctly (something, as you can see, I am incapable of achieving). I cannot speak for Canada, but, as I understand it, euthanasia was only permitted by your Parliament in 2016. Not long ago. It was limited to those suffering and facing death. In 2021, your Supreme Court extended this right, (on the basis of “diversity”) to those not facing death at all, but, suffering from an irredeemable condition. It was also extended to those suffering mental illnesses. This, has attracted international criticism, and a Canadian review of the position, by four eminent physicians concludes that the legislation provides insufficient protection for Canadians.
As you raised the issue relating to Canada, you may consider that if this expansion has occurred in less that 7 years, well, I will say no more.
As a final point, as you left the UK 40 years ago , you may find a very different Britain today, unrecognisable indeed.

Putting someone not for resuscitation is absolutely not the same as assisted dying. It is only valid in the event of a person having a cardiac arrest; no signs of consciousness, no breathing effort, no pulse thus no signs of life. The individual can still get treatment for other conditions eg infection, heart attack …..

I think this is totally misjudged and unethical. We shouldn't be so selfish and entitled to think we can end lives. Life is a struggle and can be painful but we should always let nature takes it course. Someone who wants to end their life may be depressed too. It's shocking that they are trying to legalise something so selfish and reckless.

No i dont agree with assisted dying because its abused. Was judt for terminal illnesses but now for mental illneses someone had assisted dying for severe noises in ears. 1 in 5 people in the nethetlsnds died this way or it might have been 2 out of 5. I 100% support this bill. I voted in favor of this in New Zealand and I don't regret my decision. It gives people suffering from a terminal illness an option on when they want to go and most importantly how they want to go.
I agree completely. Here in Canada it's been in place since 2016. I am amazed about the disinformation about it in comments here and elsewhere. People really single out Canada while laws are much more permissive regarding end of life options in some European countries.
I really hope this is only available for those with physical disorders that will either cause death or remove any ability to live, because the amount of mentally ill people that will kill themselves using this will be terrifying

Its even worse if the person/patient is not classed as having the consent capability... these poor souls are probably in agony and not able to articulate, imagine being trapped in your own body feeling the agony but you just cant escape, so wrong, but as animals cant speak please bring your dying dog etc so we can do the humane thing.

I totally support it. I feel so bad for this lady and she should have the right to choose. Well done Scotland for being progressive and caring about people's rights. With the right safeguards in place this is humanitarian. There’s a big difference between a 70 year old in pain with zero quality of life and a 45 year old with a bit of depression. Getting near end of life and already on six different pills a day and suffering some pain ( chronic discomfort might be better term) and I know I’m very unlikely to find the cure for cancer or do anything fantastic that will make life better for others. All I’m going to do is suffer more and rely more on others to look after me and for what? The occasional ironic joke about my poor health? No, the right and logical thing to do is when you know the car will no longer get you to the shop it’s time to scrap it. New tyres won’t make it go faster or further. Like lipstick on the pig, the reality is there and not that difficulty to see. The immoral argument but valid one is can society support a large percentage of its population that is over eighty? Some 85 year olds are fit as fiddles and cost society very little however we can not ignore the reality that with age comes deterioration and with deterioration comes the cost of repair. What we might see in our NHS is life extending charges of some kind. Whereby if you want to live a “comfortable life “ beyond a certain age then that care will be bought privately. So choice then becomes euthanasia or inheritance. No pig no lipstick !

As an Orthdodox Christian, this is an abhorrent practice. Christ suffered before He died on the cross. For many of us we may also be called to suffer before the end of our lives. This can help to purify our souls in humility and prepare us for when we do leave this world when the time comes.

I think we should be more concerned with tackling the poverty/housing/cost of living issues issues we face in the interest of practising charity to others, and make sure our children are safe from predation, whether it be from certain Western values like the inclusion of children in film/television/photography, or certain cultures where the men pursue or even try to kidnap young people. We have bigger priorities in helping others than simply dictating to them how to live, we all need to do our part to ensure people can live long enough to purify their souls and that they done by living by Jesus' example of humility and kindness ❤

We all have the chance to repent in humility and turn to God right up to the end of our lives. Many people who experience suffering also experience this. My father went into hospital for a trans fusion.. being of a certain age unbeknown to us or him he was put on the starvation, dehydration, medication withdrawl 'pathway'.
