to think that they created this stuff after all the mega songs they did back in the 70s, with Peter, and after he left....they did this in 1983! still in the true Genesis spirit and spitting in the face of all those new-fangled electro-pop bands which were coming up then.
It is crazy. I mean the first three Genesis albums (Trespass, Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot) were so amazing everything that came after seemed sort of ok but just missing that touch of magic. Then when all seemed lost, this brilliant, brilliant album just popped up out of the blue and virtually no-one noticed. What a classic.
Man, i"m an elec enginerd, 70's teen, who played guitar for 55 years and played guitar/keys in an 80's hairband during college and can't imagine how much more success i could have achieved with a woman who believed in me. But, i was single from 23-45 and climbed the ladder faster than anyone else, but 2 being 1 can accomplish "Miracles" and per 10 CC...That's the Way God Planned it.

When Genesis goes into their extended instrumental pieces, they are unassailable. Well, more unassailable then when they're not doing them. Ok ok ok they're just unassailable period. 👍
folkoderaad9693- That would be kind of nice if they could do a third home by the sea, but, unfortunately Genesis is no longer together( as they had gotten older ) they figured that it was their time to hang it up! Genesis certainly had a great career musically and their live performances were certainly great too! Kudos to all the band members of Genesis and Chester Thompson and Darryl Sturmer and Bill Bruford too who were great in Genesis too!

In my mind, this song (part II) is the actual story that the ghosts tell us and remind us in the final words of part II our summation of our lives. And as I am now at age 69, I am digitally transferring my old 35 mm film prints and slides. The title of my life's album will be prefaced by these words: "Scenes of unimportance like photos in a frame, things that go to make up a life. As I relive my life in what I show you."
A very dark time for me back then. Music can give hope in the heart for the mind to see, purifiying in a sense, Here we are 35 years later the sound as bright as the sun, triumphant in our hopes , victory in our minds , the past carved in stone...
Definitely one of the highlights of 80s Genesis shows. God did this ever sound powerful live! The drums and Rutherford's bass pedals shook the house down. A delightful cacophony for the ears!
Got to agree with you Squonk86. When I saw Phil Collins in Dallas in the mid to late 80's, he had a guy named Max or Matt on drums behind him. Then, on In the Air Tonight, both of them playing together in such perfect synchrony that it sounded like one set of drums. I have spoke of that concert many times over the years. Good times! 🎧
The song that hooked me to Genesis, back when I discovered it many years ago, and made me want to discover more. Also proof that the more progressive side of Genesis didn't stop when they became a trio. Be it Duke's suite from Duke; Dodo/Lurker from Abacab; This piece (paired with "first" Home by the Sea, as it should) from the eponymous album; Domino and/or The Brazilian from Invisible Touch; Fading Lights from We can't dance... They are all examples, proof that even with their pop success, the trio form of the band never ceased to be inventive, creative... and just one hell of a band.

When that Taurus bass kicks in, it's the genesis i know from playing Lego in the seventies and early eighties while my dad played the vinyl of his latest purchase. Most music i can hear all the parts and have an opinion how i would reproduce it, but the layers are so rich here i just have to listen and let it do its thing.

Thanks to extraordinary audio reproductions, we have Genesis with us forever! Thank you guys for all the great masterpieces!

For some reason 2:13 to 3:13 kind of reminds me of a level from Spyro the Dragon (1998) for the original PlayStation. I wonder if Stewart Copeland was influenced by Tony Banks’ work when he worked on the first Spyro game?
This is where I got interested in the Synclavier II, the synthesiser that Tony used the most on this album. It cost at least $25,000 new back then, now I have one as a $20 app on my iPad. That’s progress!
"So many years ago when we first heard 'Welcome to the Home by the Sea' But we managed to escape and now we find ourselves in The Second Home by the Sea!"
Really enjoying the music processed through the IC density of that era, quite nostalgic here over transistors at that scale, and still a lot of discrete circuits onboard, just think about those shiny capacitors in various colored sleeves, the smattering of real inductors as necessary .... all gone now
Doubt anyone will see this, but I found Genesis through an ooooooold record my late grandpa had, it was this album and i didn't really appreciate it the first time i listened to it. but something made me go "damn there were some catchy songs on there maybe i should spin it back up", and that second time listening to it, it really all just sank in. how good of an album this is. i still remember hearing the ending of this song and just going like fuck man, what i would give to have the chance to be in the garage with my grandpa, helping him work on his truck with this record playing in the background.
WHAT??? THERE IS A SECOND ONE?????? Just kidding, they have the big bucks for that... BUNDLES OF FIVERS! Can't wait for the third one though, its probably on Tony's basement.
Is there any possible chance we could hear this masterpiece in its complete form as it should be heard? I feel like i had to stop in the middle of making love before the happy ending. You can't do this to a quality piece of music. Give us the whole thing or don't bother. Never mind. 😒🙄

Mike Rutherford is an amazing Cog in an amazing machine called Genesis, this album is vastly underrated and just goes beyond the realm of great.

The more proggy song off the album. Wish it weren't separated from Home by the Sea. Great songs.

Back in the day, I bought "That's All" on a 45RPM, and this was the B-side. This made me buy the whole album. Incredible.
Had the pleasure of seeing them twice in the 80's. When you could buy good floor seats for $22. Unbelievable ticket prices anymore.
Same here dude but saw them from 1976-2007 and every concert was outstanding and the best times of my life.👍
