    It's a brilliant speech.
But misses out on the Judeo Christian era in-between, that proves to be the very battlefield, the crucible of all we've lived through.

We are naturally born "Athenians" but quickly our often inexperienced new parents buy into the concept of a 'visigoth' and never nurture the Athenian in our children, instead acting as a visigoth would; putting us into daycare pursuing wealth over wellbeing and community, where we are raised *even as infants* by *low wage* uninvested daycare workers, whose own children have half the resources of the families they tend, while putting their own child with someone else, paid even less.
The basic nature of breastfeeding is a baby knowing it's wellbeing depends on the wellbeing of the mother. The father knowing his child's wellbeing depends on everyone's safety and care, the baby seeing mom supported by him/them/many circles and versions of nurturing and appreciation. (Watch as your toddler gets quieter and easier when you're sick and need to recouperate, for example). We don't live like Athenians here.... parents have never even had dinner (or more than a 30 minute conversation) with their baby's caretaker. Laughable. Neglectful.

Compelling speech by Postman that nevertheless reeks of oversimplification. He is much more nuanced in other talks.

Neil Postman was indeed a great teacher, a beacon of enlightenment in the darkness of cultural decline. I read all his books and quote his ideas often in my classes. I really mean no offense but this speech is clearly full of huge and dangerous mistakes and oversimplyfications usually used to impress uneducated people and it lacks , man, I really hate to say this, even basic historical knowledge.Yet I now, that Postman had a most superb knowledge of history...Therefore I am most astonished and I can't understand that he talks like this for the sake of effect and advocates this "those barbarians" VERSUS "we the civilised people" cliché that is a eurozentristic ideology of the 19th century and still in use among uneducated people. The visigoths were just ONE Germanic tribe among many many others in late antiquity, who were in turn pushed from their homeland by the HUNS. They had absolutely nothing to do with classical Athens because and they were briefly fighting the Romans 700 (!!!) years after Athens had lost the fight for supremacy against Sparta. As a history teacher I love Antiquity, yet 90% of Athens population were not entitled to vote in Athens "democracy" as they were slaves, women or simply Greeks from outside Athens. Women in Germanic tribes had MUCH more to say in society and could rarely even become leaders...They reason why Roman (Greek) Antiquity declined has to do with many factors, not just bookburning Germanic tribes. By the way, Germany as many other countries were conquered and their population partly enslaved or totally empoverished to a large extend because of the taxes they had to pay. Here more about their art etc. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visigoths

I think you have missed the point. Without the Greeks of this period we would have a very different world. He is using the Visigoths in a symbolic sense.

Postman is trying to teach us about individual human Perspectives, rather than trying to teach us world history. The reality of our human Perspectives is with us every day, everywhere, it's choice in the minds of those living here and now. World history on the other hand, is a collection of stories captured from the past. Neil Postman is trying to teach you about what is happening (theme) rather than what has happened (plot).

Epicurus conceived atomic theory? How about Democritus. He was not an Athenian. Athenians massacred with as much bloodlust as Goths. (Melos). Athenians owned slaves, considered everyone around them as barbarians, held women in the low esteem . . ..

Just exchange the word "Visigoth" with Jew/Arab/Black/ Mexican etc. and Athenian with Christian/American/White etc. and you know what the problem with these oversimplifications is...
