You can use any color you like by doing one of two things... either base the shape in white, let it dry, and paint over it (underpainting), or mix a tiny amount of white into any transparent color to make it opaque. Not enough to lighten it severely, it doesn't take much, just enough to thicken it. You can do the same thing with white gouache as well if you don't have a white watercolor.

For example, I think on the fins I would have put the white, then dragged it just with water. Kind of like what you've done with the poppy flowers in one of your videos. But I think it turned out a lot brighter than I expected.

I love using the black paper with some of the more iridescent watercolor paint or the metallics. you can even mix your metallic with your other colors . it really works well with the black background.
As far as your painting. I thought that your perspective and your fish were beautiful .but it did dry a little flat. Try again mixing in some of your gold metallic with your other paint.

It’s a great subject for black paper - I just started with it, primarily for shimmer paints. If you used some shimmer red on their backs it might add another interesting dimension? I preferred it without the background - perhaps a few bubbles would be good? Total shimmer on black is almost too much, but a mix could be really effective and realistic. Please continue to try some ideas - this is a really promising start 👏😁

When I do so, I can focus on what I learned. 😀This leaves me with a positive feeling even if I’m not as pleased with the results. I like your painting a lot, but can see why you prefer gouache on this paper....it allows for stronger contrast, and the koi fish call for contract. I think your candor and willingness to demonstrate that art is a process of continual learning and improvement is something I wish more RUclipsr's had and why I subscribe to your channel. I think your frustration stems from the result not being identical to the one you imagined in your head because it's great work...the color pallette with the dark background almost has this vibe of something you'd see in comic book or graphic novel covers. Even if it's not "on camera" I'd encourage you to try at least one more time, maybe play with the composition a bit or exaggerate the tails to add more balance. With black paper I also think it's best to play with the transparent nature of the watercolor and not against it. There was almost a point where the black paper coming through the paint almost gave the illusion of a scale-like texture so maybe add thinner layers and let them dry completely in between. Maybe using the blue to create the illusion of ripples or surface tension, black paper would better represent an "evening scene" where the water was reflecting a darker sky rather than a blue one. Honestly at this point I think I'm just typing out my own plans to try my own version on this paper after being inspired by your video haha So thank you for that at least! I've also found that really wet washes get underneath cheap or really thin tape, mix with the adhesive, and that's what's causing the paper to pull. It's more labor intensive but I like to stretch the paper on art board in-lieu of tape when I know I'm going to be using a lot of water. Thanks again for the video!

Try “delicate surfaces” painters tape. It works great. Also I use black watercolor paper only with metallics.

Thanks for that tip for I too have a problem with the tape taking my paper off.

I found if I heated my tape [yellow frog] before removing very carefully, it pulled up much less of the paper.

Soo good you made it ! I’m recently trying working on black /dark paper as well. I found that white pencil (there are this mechanical pencils where you can exchange the filler, and you can buy the white filler on Amazon) makes things so much easier. You can also sketch with white watercolour pencil/crayon. Personally I like making white line drawing on dark background. You have some flower tutorials with watercolour and black line drawing. I use them to make white line flowers. I hope that with trying new things you could touch the topic of how to approach big format in watercolours. Like A3 or A2. I’m struggling to make wet on wet with them. They eighter dry too fast or create water paddles and warp terribly.

Using painterstape, without ripping the paper, it helps when you first stick it on your desk a few times or on your sweater... that way the most part of stickyness is gone and it wont rip the paper. I use it this way and it works quite good. I liked the fishes... I would say this is not really a fail, but a succeeded experiment. The blue is not really my favorite. Love your art a lot though.

Please try and do colourful jellyfish on the black paper, think the transparent watercolours would work amazing!
