I agree - they should’ve included a palette. Also, ditch the white, the green and the brown and substitute a cool blue (phthalo blue), a cool red (rose), and a cool yellow (lemon) which would be much more useful and provide many more color choices.
Emma I agree with you regarding a palette to hold the pans. It does seem odd that they have not thought of it. Beginners may be put off handling the paints as they’d have to keep picking up the pans. Let’s hope Etcher sort this out asap - however as a marketing ploy they may want the beginner to spend more... The sketchbook looks so tempting! I sometimes I just draw on cold press watercolour paper as it gives something/texture to your drawing...but I would say to beginners don’t worry about having the sketchbook for just your best work, you’ll worry about not filling it with your best work ever. Who’s to interpret good or bad in your sketchbook? It’s a lovely sketchbook with fab paper so just enjoy using it, what you do in it doesn’t have to be shown to anyone 😁 I’ve wittered on enough...now trying to justify buying the sketchbook...ha ha!
Would 6 half pans fit in something like an Altoids tin as a makeshift palette? (I haven’t bought loose pans before, so I don’t have a good frame of reference for size.)
That was interesting! I'm actually a campaign backer and got the kit a few weeks ago. Couldn't yet so a lot with it due to illness (Covid), bit hope to get started, soon. They palette thing is the first thing I noticed, too. Now, I'm not a total beginner and have got everything handy, but what would a total noob do in this situation?! This actually made me sort of mad at the set. It's such a nice idea and the materials themselves are wonderful, but a real beginner would just be better off buying a palette with colours. Also, I feel a beginner would prefer to do their exercises in a sketchbook, no? The online class has a lot of great exercises - you wouldn't do these on a watercolor block. I mean... why? 🤦 Sorry. I'm so upset even looking at this. 😅🙏 I think I'll have to post my own review to get over this. 😅
You are my favorite RUclipsr! I have been following you for 3 years now and i love your videos they some of the highlights of my week! You actually inspired me to start my own after watercoloring RUclips channel! I just want to say thank you for being a amazing teacher! Keep up the great work and HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE! P.S. its one of my goals to hit 100 subscribers before the end of the year!
After now seeing the price of this gorgeous sketchbook plus the customs cost I’d have to pay to get shipped to the UK I’m unlikely to buy this. But I may get the cold pressed A5 Mixed Media Sketchbook as reviews have been very good...
@@emkay888 yess me too, but it's pretty easy to make your own. I've sewn a few myself its fun. Or make blocks of half sheets so they last longer as I usually only paint smaller landscapes etc. Myself and I make nice little hardcovers for them. Love it. I also love quite a few medium/mid tier priced papers from jacksons, to me, their the absolute best place to buy my supplies even here in the US. :) I just don't care for their brand of watercolor paper but any other even partial cotton papers they sell in the mid price range are excellent! Very good quality much better prices
If I remember correctly, only the Signature series is Fabriano. I have several of the white canvas and one of the grey imitation leather and they are not.
Man, with the world the way it is and economies crashing, that's an outrageous amount to say the least as nothing on their site is below $50 well except sample small paper cast offs. Strathmore has a few watercolor for beginner books with e courses etc that are more humanity budget friendly. I've been at this over a year and have spent more more than I care to admit on supplies trying to find my fit since there's hardly any tutorials from left-handed perspective whether painting or calligraphy or sketching and each artist has their favorites and go to tools, etc. I think this is the most expensive hobby I've ever had and sadly, depending on which artist I'm trying to learn from, most of the time I end up getting upset, frustrated and giving up because majority go super fast and tell you to head to patreon to pay for the slower instruction or the tutorial will say for beginner and then is more for professional. I still refuse to give up because the other 10 % I actually learn something and come away feeling accomplished and at peace. 😆 example: I will NEVER PURCHASE Arches paper because it's elite paper that my budget will never afford as well as certain paints and brushes. I do love Princeton for their budget friendly products as well as Silver and Royal and Langnickel....and my favorite BEAUTIFUL paint thus far remains Kuretake!!!! Stonehenge PAPER.
@@clairemoore2753 Thank you so much!!! I had only found 1 last year, Marta from Maremi Small Art AND she's amazing! I have had 3 now 4: Maremi, EMMA, Shayda Campbell (but, I get stressed out, agitated and give up with that channel as she goes at a roadrunner rapid did I blink pace at all times), and recently Jenna Rainey but still not having luck. I actually have learned and shared from Emma and Marta!!! They are more personable and relatable while taking beginner's into consideration! 😉 ❤ You made my day! Truly thank you.
Way too expensive for the average artist, I'd say. Strathmore Watercolor Travel Journal has 140 lb, 100% cotton cold press paper and sells for a quarter of the price. Or make your own: buy a sheet of Arches and some loose leaf binder rings at Staples. Cut the paper to sketchbook size, punch two holes at one end, insert the rings. Voila! You've saved a bundle.
hmm I am inclined to think this is overpriced for what it it. The paints do not appear to be that pigmented, or its the brush as its synthetic which does not work as well as Sable. The pad is only 50% percent Cotton. For the price you would think they would supply a better quality pad. From experience if you get naff stuff first time it puts you off continuing. Winsor and Newton Paints student Range Cotman looks better than this.
I don't trust this company because some of their things are stupidly overpriced, and has made me doubt them. They seem to have some awesome things, but the trust level is just not there for me.

Yep. When she said 6 colors, I thought there would be three cool and three warm primaries.

Very nice video and nice beginner's set. I really enjoy your teaching style.
I would love the sketch book!
I agree these are great sketchbooks. I have 2 sizes of the canvas covers
I just love your intro! It's so calming and peaceful! 🥰
Right? Mixing pallette ditch the white

If you want good paper just splurge on arches :)

I didn't realize the etchr lab sketchbooks contained fabriano paper. I may have to treat myself as a birthday present.

@@jenniferarted3652 Yes! It’s only the Signature Series, and they produce limited quantities every year
Thanks for the info!
My birthday is April...if it’s limited series perhaps I should treat myself now...hate to be disappointed come the day...🤣
Why black and white though?

Are the supplies you presented and the company in general, Vegan and Cruelty-Free!?
It probably would have been better to have a cheap tin with a llama on it instead of the pin.
Where can you buy the metal pan for the 6 cake paints ? TIA!!
Amazon 😉
I have boughten them at Blick & Etsy.
