Shop Doors pt. 5 - The Summer Break

  • After some head scratching and wondering how the heck I was going to do it, I figure out a plan to get the doors hung and the upper track mounted. But then summer on the farm starts up and the doors get put on hold for awhile. Eventually, I get back to the doors by working on the wood frames, which require a lot of lap joints and carriage bolts.

True DIY, as in Do it yourself, by yourself. Those were some big doors to be setting up without any help. It looked like fun problem solving and figuring it out though. Thats the part I like about working alone. At least the dog was there for moral support!

Loved that summer of farming montage and then later in your video the day into night progression shown as you installed the lumber into the framed door. Very good impressions of time passing by.

Awesome storytelling through filmmaking, both the summer sequence and the little shot of you hammering and the birds flying out of the tree.

It was funny hearing, 'it sucks getting old.' Though you were joking I wanted to say that it doesn't suck getting old, it sucks finding yourself unprepared. Lotta luck involved too. Love your videos and your wit.

The harvest footage was shot and edited as well as any TV drama I can think of. These just keep getting more and more brilliant by the episode. Not to mention the project itself which is just fantastic

This is turning out to be a huge project. I didn't think it would be as complicated as the machinery vids you've posted but I guess I was wrong. The doors look great. Can't wait to see the paneling.

Another great video in this series -- I've enjoyed watching them all, but this one is particularly nice because of the hiatus in the middle. You're working, getting into it, and then farm work comes in and puts the project on hold. It's cool that you included that part. Very true to life. And then, of course, it's great to see the hefty design (super big! super overbuilt!) coming together. You're gonna have a thoroughly transformed barn when you're done, that's for sure.

Your videos are simply great; they are real world and not making something just for the sake of a youtube video. You have a really relaxed style, nothing's rushed but at the same time the editing is so good that I (we) don't lose concentration or attention. I've been watching your work for a long time and will not be stopping anytime soon! Keep it up, really good.

In the future, consider using construction adhesive on lap joints like this. The gap is very difficult to fill with normal Titebond II. Great work!

need some adjusters to even out your door gaps when you build sliders. since you welded them solid you can weld a piece of flat stock over the gap where they come together on one door to overlap. not a fix per se but a cover up

To square the doors together you first make one a closely plumb as possible my adjusting top, bottom, right and left rollers. Then using the same methods adjust the other to match the first. Nothing on the whole project, floor, walls, door opening, and the doors themselves are perfectly square and plumb, you do the best with what you have to work with.

Ps-- that shot where you drove the big harvestor machine over rhe camera was awesone but also gave me anxiety

When I need to place a bolt in a deep recess, a socket on an extension and some of the blue poster tack stuff from the dollar store does a good job of holding on long enough to get things aligned.
