Having the whole Saturday free, I jump in on getting the horizontal metal beams up into place that form the main structure of the deck. Using clamps and some heavy angle as supporting brackets, I position all the metal beams so I can check to make sure everything is level before welding them to the uprights. After they are all welded in place, I cut the wooden joists and get them bolted in the hangers.

You make it look easy, and I know that it isn't. True sign of a farmer, with an engineer and architect living upstairs in your cabeza! And I should also mention damn good welder, rigger, mason, and carpenter too.
Really can't get enough of your videos.
    Thanks again for sharing.

I was nervous for you watching this one... but when working by ourselves we sometimes need to be innovative and a little dangerous.I thinks that's on of the reason I like watching your stuff... the way you figure how to get it done by yourself... keep up the great work.

Gotta love it. 5% of the project is engineering how a project should go together, the other 95% is figuring out how to do it by your self that is where true engineering comes in play.. The Deck is looking really good and coming along nicely!

Love watching your videos and attention to detail. A couple things I will mention though. Clamping the joists down may eventually cause them to spilt as the wood expands again. The other concern is when you used the strap to bring the frame in and have all of the joists at the same length. Unless the beam held it's shape and bent back, it may pull your bolts through the end of your joists. My suggestion would be to replace one of your joists with a steel beam/joist. Awesome vids though. What is your next project?

I had the same thought, but if it is new PT they usually shrink a lot first as they are usually really wet. I would be curious to see how it all looks after a few seasons though.

Don’t be afraid to use an air impact on those larger lags. Do a test go with one lag in the wood if you’re worried it might strip easy in softer wood, but you’ll find it is actually pretty easy to get the feel of when it’s fully home. I use an IR gun that has a power selector dial in the back which makes it nice for even the smaller stuff. As a professional carpenter I always have a decent sized compressor on site that is capable of running two framing guns flat out, so the air impact becomes a go-to tool to have as well.

Love your channel. You had me cringing the entire time you walked on that roof getting those beams up there. I had a parent who hurt their back in a pretty simple unexpected way in their early 30's after living a county lifestyle, and their life was never the same afterward. Use some safety gear my friend. A fall could change your life.

Try the Polycarbide Abrasive Wheel at Harbor Freight instead of the wire brush on your angle grinder for cleaning off paint/rust before welding. I find that they work better & quicker than the wire and don't fling back at you when hit a a corner or an edge wrong.

  • @badgecko

After a couple of years you should check your fasteners for the joists. Treated lumber is now treated with copper instead of arsenic. They've been finding decks failing prematurely because of electrolysis between the bolts and the copper treatment in the wood making the bolts corrode and weaken. Shouldn't be too much of a problem because all your joists are sitting in saddles, but something to keep in mind.
