Workbench from CNC Milled Logs - pt. 1/3

- When I replaced the wood floor in my barn with a concrete slab, I saved as much of the wood as I could. The main support for the floor were 6 big timbers that spanned the full length of the barn. These logs have been stored behind the barn for a couple years now, and I've been wanting to do something with them before they rot and go to waste. I thought a good project for them would be to mill them down on the CNC table and build a workbench out of them, which would be a neat way of keeping the wood in the barn where it came from. This would also be a great project to get some practice in on the CNC routing table.
your projects are stunning
How do you have so many toys and why are so many of them so shiny!? I love that you CNC’d it for the hell of it, this world needs more people like you doing something a certain way simply because of enjoyment.
One of the portable sawmill companies should have sponsored this video. This man needs a sawmill!
I know for sure that there were a LOT of people doing a "Happy Dance" when they saw "Rainfall Projects" in their in-box!!!
So happy to see you brother.
And by the way, that is one heck of a Work Bench !
Love your stuff man.
Thank you
Me
Awesome. Glad to see you're back. We missed you.
Ditto....
Same!!!!!
I was excited to see a new video, felt all giddily inside
JD, I really enjoy watching you create, not only as you work on the project at hand but the images of your family farm, barns, machinery, life and landscapes that surround you. Truly, you are an artist. Thank you for sharing your talent with us.
Rainfall Projects, Flight Chops, and Essential Craftsman videos all in one week. Totally Awsome!
I would love to see Scott and JD collaborate on a blacksmithing project. That would be awesome!
Clickspring also i think.
Making a workbench from old barn parts is pretty sick! Great to have you back.
Hello from Yorkton, Saskatchewan, Canada. Thanks for sharing your great video’s please keep them coming.
I am so jealous of your workspaces and the tools you have at your disposal! Thank you for sharing your ingenuity and creativity, I really appreciate it.
One of the best channels on RUclips
I don’t usually comment on RUclips videos but it made me crazy happy to see a video by you pop up on my feed. Can’t wait to see the rest of this project!
Excellent work! That's gonna be a beast of a table! I see that you were using a downcut spiral bit. That's why you were having trouble with the drilling toolpath. Switch to an upcut bit, and those problems will go away. Can't wait to see part 2!
glad you're back man. here's a few things I noticed that might help you in the future.
1. They make chainsaw chains specifically for ripping cuts. That cross cut isn't meant for ripping.
2. you can make an "Alaskan mill" if you want to do cuts like that in the future.
3. get an up-spiral, center cutting end mill. this is better for wood as it pulls up the material instead of re-cutting it and will bore holes more effectively. (yours is down spiral)
4. Sounded like you were getting "rub" not "chatter" on the bit, this is because wood expands when it warms up (from the cutting) and then rubs the upper shaft of the cutter where there is no cutting edge and causes tool deflection.
5. Instead of threading 1" bar stock just weld 1" all thread (threaded rod) chunks onto the end of the solid stock. (since you will never see it anyway) You can use a piece of angle iron as a "poor mans v block" to cradle the two pieces and keep them in line for fitting.
6. use a candle or bees wax paste as lube. Yes. I'm serious. rub the candle on the steel bar to make a "film" of wax to help it slide in. the wax wont damage or discolor the wood.
7. old gift cards (the plastic ones) make great glue spreaders for stuff like this as they can be flexed and easier to use than a stir stick like you used.
8. don't wipe the squeeze out. wait for it to dry and clean it off with a scraper or a good chisel. This becomes even more important if you are going to stain something as it will save you from "blotches" where the glue wipe blocks the stain from penetrating the surface and will save sanding time.
Hope to see more soon and hope this helps.
If you want to file a chain for ripping yourself its 5° instead of 35° =almost 90°to the blade
maybe you should make a video making a table instead pointing out all things you think he did wrong
@@funtyes1970 I do it for a living. No time or urge for making videos. Helpful hints are a long way from telling someone they're wrong. Nice try though.
Welcome back welcome back!
Love your video's
Glad to see you back in the barn. Cool table.
He lives! Good to see you again bro!
Couldn't believe it when I saw the notification, I thought I was lucid dreaming.
That was SUPER creative and very cool CNC you made!
I love your videos and the style of how you make them. I really like the detailed information you give as well as the type of projects you do. Even the videos from around the farm are interesting! Keep up the videos, by all the comments, we clearly don't get enough of your videos!! Looking forward to part two!
Great use of those old timbers. Looking good so far. Can't wait to see the rest. Thanks for sharing!
Awesome table! Glad to see you back at it
Great video JD, SO happy to have you back and finally, huge congratulations on your marriage!
Welcome back! What a great bench that will be! So cool that you left the edge ‘historical’. That was a great touch!
That looks awesome! I'm glad to see a new vid. That work bench will be around for generations.
Great to see you back and congratulations!
Always love your channel. Living as a farmer would be ideal life for me. Away from everyone.
Please keep the videos coming. Love them.
Grin. I was impressed you had the patience to do this with a CNC. One thing you proved a CNC can be used for about anything.
Glad to see you back.
Chainsaw with ripping chain works much better.
Looks good! Glad to see your videos back!
This is absolutely amazing dude. Thank you so much for sharing this blend of technology with reuse of these old timbers. Really cool.
Awesome work, glad to see you back, your a true craftsman in every sense of the word.
Very cool. Well done. Looking forward to pt. 2.
That's going to be an awesome, chunky workbench. Looking forward to the next episode! I love watching you have fun with your tools.
I'm not sure if anybody has said, but when you are using a diestock to thread bar, if you turn it half a turn then back a quarter the die snaps off the swarf and its easier to run the die down the bar, also use plenty of oil. I think your fabrications are brilliant, very artistic, great video's
WoW! You are such a hard worker and yet so creative. Really looking up to you, as a 19 yo guy. Thanks for the inspiration!
So happy to see a new video from you. Thank you and excellent work!
Subscribed after two minutes. You had me at old and new. Thank you RUclips algorithm.
They do make ripping chain for saws, much smoother cut and better for the saw. Still turned out fine, though, another great project on the way!
Your builds are always unique, creative and well built.
Nice work! Big timbers, big table‼
Bridgeport Slide Hammer Nail Puller #64
The slide hammer nail pullers are hard to beat for pulling nails with minimal damage.
Strange not to use a band saw and to breathe in all that dust... I applaud you for your effort and skill!
Awesome that you are back. I was worried that you had given up on posting... Thank you .
Will be nice and solid! Welcome back!
That is going to be a nice heavy duty work bench. Can hardly wait to see the rest of the build.
Nice to see you video again! As allways!!
This is very interesting to me, I have some white oak dunnage I got from work that they were going to haul off to the dump. I have designs of making a work bench for my shop. I can't wait to see more of this project. Thanks for sharing!
You dispelled all my fears by making those square washers, nice touch...
What a beautiful intro, you live in paradise, friggin awesome!
Very clever. Very interesting. That’s going to be one hell of a workbench.
So glad you are back!
Wow! You have some awesome machines and an awesome shop! Thanks for sharing. Thats an awesome bench!
Sooo glad you are back!
These are some of the best DIY projects to watch on RUclips. The presentation and creative problem solving is top notch
Glad to see you are back! That's one heavy duty wood table!!!
Agree. Glad you are back. You have awesome content.
That is a really nice table I miss watching your videos do you do a great job at everything you touch
Just when I thought my work bench was cool. I’m excited to see more. Also the art work in the background on the wall is really cool.
Just found this channel and am enjoying this so much you are a great builder have watched all of the barn deck series and can't wait for more videos
Justin, your back, we missed you. Nice project. If you ever have that much glue up again try putting your glue in a roller pan and using a small roller a 1in like you use to go behind the toilet. Looking forward to more videos as you weather the winter.
Got so excited for the new video, and you never disappoint! Great idea with the pins !
Glad to see you back! Looking forward to part two. 👍🏼
That sawdust pile is incredible
Woot woot glad to see you’re still doing projects.
Good to see you back, I was worried that you were done making videos
Dang, you literally are goals man, I envy your setup but know it took a lot of hard work! Your work is inspiration for me!
Awesome job! Beautiful as always. I think I would have given up on CNC milling the whole thing and opted to have the logs rough milled (if possible) by someone then used the CNC to clean it up. But an impressive show of programming to mill it all with the CNC. That router must be a monster.
Agreed. I get the spirit (or sponsor obligation?) of this build, but it sure did burn up time! Local sawmill guys are always on Craigslist. But they don't appreciate metal in logs! Best, @HoneyOnWales
YES! YOU'RE BACK!
Yay, you’re back!
I gasped when I saw that huge pile of sawdust. That’s nuts!
Welcome Back!
He's alive! Welcome back!
Rainfall and a fireball tool video, what a great Saturday!
Glad to see one of your videos pop up in my subs box! Love this project, awesome to see both of your CNC’s coming together for an impressive project!
Look forward to seeing this!
I’m glad you have the bobcat to move it around
That's a pretty clever way to get your oversize work to size on the router. Props
That is an amazing looking workbench. And big. And looks like it weighs a ton
Amazing! This is gonna be sweet! Look forward to the next video!
It's beautiful.
I'm super excited to see what the legs look like.
A beast like that might need a steel frame.
Nice to see an upload from you !!
This was an incredible video to watch. Thanks for making it.
Great to have you back! You might want to watch Matt Cremona’s series on his DIY saw mill
You have to love builds where the glue isn't painted on it's just poured on. You know it's hardcore :D
This last summer I made a bench top using the same threaded rod method, I love the results.
Really enjoy your videos, thrilled to see new content!
Great to see you back! Awesome project, as always!
Nice to see you back mate! Thanks for the great video, is always a joy!
Love your channel. Couple tools which aren’t that expensive which might help you with these type projects are a Prazi beam cutter and a flattening jig for a router.
Your videos are missed here, welcome back..!
Nice video. Welcome back. Really miss seeing your work.
You gotta sharpen those chains brother. Good rule of thumb. If the shit coming off the chain is dusty it’s time to sharpen.
Really like the idea of reusing the beams. Especially on a giant workbench. 👍🏼👍🏼
this thing will last forever. nice job
Welcome back great video as usual
Nice project, love seeing patience you show on your projects. Tip: you can use a 4" paint roller to quickly apply the glue next time.
Awesome project to start back up with.
Awesome project. Some good out of the box thinking along the way. And Vectric is awesome software!
Dude 👍👍👍. Glad to see a new project from you 😀
What an incredible effort! All that milling--that CNC table and gantry [with the motors and router] must be super reliable to do all that work without a hitch.
I really enjoy watching your bids man. Keep up the great projects!
Great video as always
