In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about the Australian Cattle Dog that you might not know.
    A Quick Overview:
    Group: Herding Dogs
    Weight: 30 to 50 pounds
Height: 17 to 20 inches tall at the shoulder
    Life Expectancy: 12 - 15 years
The Australian Cattle Dog is a high-energy working dog. He is not a couch potato - we repeat: he is not a couch potato. He wants to be active and busy most of the time. His energy must be directed, or he'll become bored and will resort to entertaining himself, usually by doing something you consider naughty, like digging in the trash or digging up your flower garden.
The Australian Cattle Dog is also highly devoted to his owner and family. He usually attaches himself closely to one person and bonds less closely with others. He's often called a "Velcro" dog because he attaches so firmly; he likes to be in close physical contact with his chosen person all the time.
Because the Australian Cattle Dog was bred to herd, and herd with force, by biting, he is a mouthy dog. His instinct is to nip cattle, children, pets, cars, anything that moves. He has a strong tendency to bite, even in play. This tendency must be properly directed with socialization and training when he's a puppy, or it can turn into dangerous behavior.
Another part of the breed's instinct is his strong prey drive. He's fascinated by squirrels, cats, and other small animals. If the Australian Cattle Dog is raised from puppyhood with other pets, including cats, he can be trusted to live peacefully with them in his home. He's likely to consider those outside his household to be fair game, though. The Australian Cattle Dog is generally friendly, but he is protective of his family and home turf, and he tends to be wary of strangers.
There is a toughness about the Australian Cattle Dog - he had to be tough to handle the high temperatures, rough terrain, and long distances involved in his job on ranches - that makes him both highly tolerant of pain and intensely focused. He'll keep working even when he's injured. Owners must pay careful attention to this breed to make sure he stops working or competing if he gets hurt.

Have red heeler I got from pound when he was 2 years old. He was on kill list because he was "too old" to adopt. Everyone wanted puppies. Best dog ever. Didn't read the heeler manual. He is cuddly, doesn't nip or bite and loves everyone. Sheds like crazy, but I can deal with that . Each dpg has his own personality.

I just got a buddy! Honest question, is it okay to leave them by themselves? I work down the street and can visit on break, so they'd be by themselves for 3-4 hours between visits. I will walk him before I leave in the morning, and instead of kenneling him he can free roam my living room (all rooms will be closed) with the tv playing (he likes the tv for some reason). I'm just a little worried I'm not being reasonable with him but I think we'll be okay because after work I have the whole rest of the day (8 hours until 10) and we go on a long walk when I get back

I found my heeler 9 years ago in a trash can when she was only 4 weeks old. I live in a one bedroom apartment so I made sure that ANYTIME she needed to get outside to work off energy, we were out the front door right away. Because I'm disabled and home 24/7 I had the ability to provide for her exercise needs. She gets more outside excersise than some that live in a big house. I was encourage by her vet saying that it doesn't matter where you live as long as she gets all her needs met. She is smarter than any dog I've ever known and anyone that spends even a small amount of time with her are blown away by her ability to understand concepts that most dogs are incapable of. She is the best dog I have ever had or known. She's my world and there isn't anything I wouldn't do for my 'Stinky Boo'

We have a 2-year old blue heeler from the pound 7 months ago. She is a great dog that loves to walk, play ball, tennis, football, and soccer. She will not catch a Frisbee. She loves people and kids. Seldom barks but she tends not to like other dogs and shows it. She ignores squirrels, chipmunks and rabbits but may go after cats. She is a little clinging but we do not know her background and are happy to have her.

I'm on my second Ausie cow dog. I love these guys. I try to run with him almost every day. The other day on our run we were being stalked by a coyote and when my buddy saw him, he chased him off. It took three times before the coyote stopped trying. I don't have much fear of coyotes as where I live I have seen hundreds of them. I'm thinking this has happened several other times when I didn't see the coyote but my dog did. My best friend literally.

My Red is a beauty. I was reluctant to have him being a cat person but as I live alone on a property I decided I would take him. He has turned out a excellent dog and I know without a doubt he would protect me and my property. He has also kept his sensitivity, still has his Teddy bear I bought him 4 years ago, Ted is still in one piece although from time to time Cody throws him out of his kennel. Lol. He is excellent with my cat, he allows my cat to dig her claws around his face and her teeth in his neck and hangs off him. Sometimes I have to pull my cat off him. He's a great dog and tough yet gentle. I play with him everyday and try to give him puzzels to work out. He loves a challenge.

They really do think they’re invincible! My dog once jumped up on a snowy ledge before we could stop him & fell off a second story porch, then proceeded to go pee on the neighbors fence. He was surprisingly alright afterwards, but he acted like nothing was wrong while everyone else was freaking out

    • @Malorn179
      @Malorn179 2 месяца назад

As soon as he said "they think they're invincible" I thought "no, they _know_ they're invincible!" People talk about their energy and intelligence but they're also one of the toughest breeds in the world. They're absolutely fearless and are bred to take anything the cattle can dish out. They've got one of the thickest skulls of any breed so getting kicked in the head by a 1400lb cow is just another day for ACDs. We know of one whose owner accidentally backed his pickup truck over his dog's head. The dog got up, shook it's head and ran off as if nothing was wrong. And our two are always throwing each other around, into walls and anything else solid that makes us cringe but they barely even notice and go back for more.

I assume that the speed limit in a school zone is generally 25 mph everywhere, and I know penalties for speeding vary by locality.
But one time my Queensland Heeler was pulling me on my longboard past a school zone. The radar sign registered my 260 pound ass moving at 45 mph. I don’t think people realize how strong these dogs are.
On another note, I rescued my Heeler from the pound. She’s the best $27 I have ever spent

I owned a red heeler. Same breed only a solid tan color. Great dog. Even when he got older and got stiff in the back legs, he wouldn't be left behind. Very protective too, he chased off a wolf that was hiding in some bushes by our driveway.
I had taken my 3 & 5 year Olds on a walk, and of course Toby came with us. Toby suddenly lunged into the bushes barking his head off, out runs a wolf (not a coyote, I know the difference) and Toby takes off after the damn thing. I scooped up my kids and ran home, grabbed my rifle and took off after Toby. I met Toby on the road panting and smiling. He got lots of praise and pets when we got home. He even got along with cats, and taught himself to be an lgd for our goat herd. Heck, he taught our aussie Shephard to be an lgd. He led the charge of our three dogs in chasing off a couple bears, nearly killed a couple great Danes, and was just the greatest dog ever.
    I miss him. 😢

Kimmy came to me and put her head on my lap, a few months after I lost both my son followed by my dog. She was around 6 months old and I'm so glad she chose me. I don't say she's a rescue dog, rather I am a rescue human. She's amazingly sweet, has loads of personality and is incredible smart. Initially she was very naughty, jumping on the kitchen bench to steal food, nipping, and trying to dominate. These dogs need strong boundaries and a pack leader, happiest when they have direction. Now she's pretty much everyone's favourite pooch, completely trustworthy with kids, cats, ducks etc

Dogs Wiz our cattle dog was not destructive but he did get a lot of regular exercise. It still probably wasn’t enough truth to tell. Mostly he did not like separation. He liked to be with us at all times. We had a companion rat terrier dog for us, as well as him, so he wasn’t ever totally alone in the house. Having a companion pet was definitely helpful.

Just got one Aussie Cattle dog, 9 weeks old with a mix of border collie. Never had a breed like this. Adorable face and personality but a tough cookie. My husband is a hee man but this dog is a challenge. He is soooooo active and chases our five cats but he is not mean just wags his tail and wants to play with the cats. They are all mature and we are conditioning him to be nice to them. He is biting everything including our hands, nips at our arms, pajamas, scotch tape, the walls in the kitchen. Has almost demolished our living room chair and the story goes on. WE ABSOLUTELY LOVE HIM. We lost our border collie in 5 weeks before we got him due to old age and my old pitbull died four months prior and an old cat died in December. So we are so glad to this puppy. Being both 60 please realize they are extremely active for aging people like us but we are sticking it out. He means alot to us and keeps us young. But if you are disabled or older think about some training as it will really help you control and calm them down.

I have had four ACD's including my current lad Didj. They are fantastic dogs-very faithful and very intelligent and fearless. They can however be over protective of their family pack so training is a definite as they have no issues with taste testing strangers who enter their yard. In saying that they are great with children but may try to assert themselves above the child in that family pack until they learn their place as Didj did with my daughter when he was a pup. Famously they will let someone in to their yard and be quite friendly but then give them a nip on the heal on the way out. This is bred into them to move cattle along when herding or working. They are also known as a "one man dog" as they will pick out their favourite human and attach them selves. That's not to say that they will ignore the rest of the family but if their favourite appears they may do so. Their tolerance for pain is extremely high as they are very robust. Love them, they will be your best mate on any adventure.

They are extremely loyal dogs. Ours is almost two and she's very much a family dog. Her only real issue is barking to alert us of some unforseen "danger". It's more annoying than anything else. And she has extreme separation anxiety. You must be willing to give them an active lifestyle. You cannot just get a blue heeler and leave them alone for long periods. If you treat them right they'll do the same for you.

I've owned a pair of Heelers. Those two dogs would work stock together like their brains were synced. I had to put my female down because she got diabetes. My male, Dink, was 15 1/2 when he went totally blind and started loosing bodily functions. No way for a dog to live. Best dogs I ever had. Told my son that if I could put a dog down that I loved that much not to piss me off. Good dogs are hard to find, kids you can get anywhere.

They are eating non human grade in kibble world. Has molds on grains and carbs that can create or have aflotoxins. I lived got my lab and he died last year. Good video, but you forgot to mention that they are not a casual breed. They NEED a lot of mental and physical stimulation. They train easily, but they're also really smart, so they're not as easy to train as something like a Lab or Retriever. They need owners who will work them and keep them active.

Train them carefully. I’ve lived with four, two of my uncle’s and two of my own, and they’re wonderful to have, but they are smart, and know it. They’ll usually think they are smarter than you, and want to play rough, like really rough. That’s okay, though, they are practically indestructible. Rook, my uncle’s second dog had an incident with a Bobcat back in the day, and he was gashed all over. Crazy dog stumbled back to the house and dropped an old tennis ball at my feet, and sat like he wanted to play fetch, with an ear about to fall off. He’s somehow still alive at nine years old.

My partner and I have a border collie x kelpie and after a year, we decided to get him a friend (cattle dog x). We made the mistake of not looking at their history and needs… and take full responsibility for that. We got him from a rescue and he has scars all over his limbs and body so he has some sort of trauma happen. We’ve now had him for a year and it’s been a nightmare. We tried our best to train him the same way we trained our border collie but he quickly turned into a dominant bully. As you mentioned, he attacks his ankles all the time and asserts his dominance. Our border collie has turned into a completely different dog and just seems so depressed all the time. We take them both out twice a day for big runs/hitting the ball in a park with a tennis racket to burn their energy. We leave toys around the house and leave kongs and treats out but still he still is a terror and destroys our house/yard and come home to our border collie depressed from being bullied. He is also now lunging at kids on the lead and is getting aggressive towards other dogs. The other night he attacked our border collie too and ripped a bunch of hair out. We often come home to furniture and stuff around the house being destroyed. We have a tiny property with no room to run, so we always take them to a park but through out the day when we are working they stay inside because we don’t want them to dig holes in the backyard of our rental. Can you please suggest anything we can do? Is this trauma, dominance and behaviour something that can be trained? Or is it a good idea to find him a home on a farm? Again, I take full responsibility for the way he is and I wish I could go back and change the way I did things. Just trying to reach out for help! Thank you for reading.

Oh dear, how sad. Borders and Collies mix well, they are both smart dogs that use intelligence and hypnotism to get the job done, ideal for sheep and small framed cattle, but once the bovine are large framed, semi-wild, horned or semi poll, then you need a fearless bully, and that's where the heeler steps in. Sounds like he is bullying your other dog, and you. Usually they attach themselves to at least one person, but they have to see that person as the leader, or they will take that role for themselves.
The cross-breeding may be confusing him, usually cattle dogs are brilliantly intelligent, enough to take training at any age.
I think it's time to seek professional help to see what can be done for him.
