How to replace your drum rear brakes Polo, Ibiza, Fabia, Fox and more VAG

  • The Polo needs some new rear brakes.
    But it almost the same if not the shame on the cars listed below. Always check your torque specs for your car!

    Before removing the breakshoes I use a tiewrap to hold the brakePistons in place;) btw thank you so much! It helped me a lot these videos!

    Just been all night messing about with the breaks on my Seat Ibiza mk2, it turns out I messed up big time the automatic adjuster, i just copy it from the ones installed, first i did the passenger side and I guess I was lucky and it fitted like a glove, but on the driver's side that's when it all went wrong, eventually I managed to make it fit but had to loosen up the hand brake cable but when I tried to adjust it again of course it did not work, so I quit and went to bed and came across your vid, tomorrow I will check everything again and will have to adjust the automa......     Didn't see any car repair video before that was as funny as this one. Okay, I wouldn't ask this garage to repair my car but it's great entertainment. I like it and I wouldn't be surprised to see the very same car in another video soon... maybe the wheel bearing didn't have enough of that "German Quality" to survive the Dutch treatment 😂

    But I have a question about the adjustment on these. Do they self adjust when you press or pump the brake pedal or do you have to adjust them manually?

      Thank you, it's a automatic system. most of the time wat I do after installation is yanking the E-brake a couple of times. Then you can really feel it tighten it up.

    You can do this without taking the bearing off, specifically for those that don’t have the proper tools to install it again, because there is a crazy torque specs on it, 180nm +180°. You can even do it without taking the brake cylinder off.

      have you checked that the cable is indeed hooked to and seated on the long vertical lever that can be seen @12:16?

      @@TheDutchGarage It didnt go as planned, initially i had no manual handbrake or rear brakes. Turns out the auto adjuster isnt really... working... on VAG models in most cases. Had to knock down the adjusting pin so the drums couldnt go on. Then knock it back bit by bit until the drums just about cleared the shoes. Still not optimal and it isnt auto adjusting even when braking hard. Aside from that this vid helped!
      I think its due to the original metal piece you keep between the shoes, different tolerances between original parts and new OEM parts.

    Thank you, a very helpful video, one question, what is the tool called you used to pull back the hand brake cable spring ? The is the hardest part of the job 😮 and won’t have my friend around for the other side 🎉

    Thank you for detailed explanation, just finished mine on polo 9n.
    But now I have soft brake pedal and hand brake is quite loose. Btw I bleed only rear brakes with car engine on. You have idea what can be problem or I made misrake with bleeding them out..? Thanks!

      Hi there, bleed the brakes front and back until the brakes are firm.

    Thanks and Well done.............Actually the stupid lever and spring system is more than 100 years old.....Henry Ford would recognize what you have demonstrated.............I hate them..........with a passion........and you always have to keep one eye on the shoes damaging the slave cylinder seals......which really ruins your whole day...I recently did the same job only to find the cheap rotten slot on the spring retainer rotted out and had to buy a whole new spring set....did I mention I hate them ?

    The Haynes manual for the POLO 9N says the hub should be torqued to 37 Pound/Feet, I believe you say something different here.

      Between information there are some abnormalizes. But i know for sure if you torque it to 37 pound feet you are going to loose a wheel. What i could find for the 9n is 155NM. The way I did it is for the 6r polo. The brakes may be the same but sometimes the torque specs are different .

      The workshop manual for Skoda Fabia mk1 is 70nm and then tighten a further 30°

    For the difficult springs, would be wise to put them in boiling water to ease them up a bit? Making it easier to pull into place? Especially the last one at 16:30

      With the special pliers its also a lot easier. Still didn't buy them tough.

      Its a 30mm 12 point socket.

      @@TheDutchGarage Is this different from a 'standard' deep 30mm socket - as I have just tried that on a Seat Ibiza 2010, and it seems to be too small to fit the nut?

    have rear drums on my 2013 1.4 ibiza. what a horrible system, why dont they just put discs on the rear too, drums looks more complicated and prone to issues

      It's probably much cheaper to produce.

      They are cheaper to produce so they tend to put them on smaller cars that require less stopping force. They emit less brake dust, No expensive caliper repairs and they’re is a small weight saving too. But yeah brake discs are easier really

      @@TheDutchGarage I'm just replacing the rear drum brakes on my Skods Fabia (2014). Both sides were leaking slightly. So, I decided to replace the lot, drums, shoes, brake cylinders and bearings. The lot cost £150. Oddly I had an older Fabia which had discs all round. I could change all the pads in an hour.
