Thank you for this! Just finished watching Part 1 and Part 2. Your technical explanatory videos are excellent, and, as you mention in Part 1, among the only places to get this information.

This is outstanding! I confess that I wanted to buy in Costa Rica where I live, a 1981 280 SL and thought that it came with Bosch K-Jetronic. Now I know otherwise!

    Hi Pierre:
We have common interests. Between my friend Jason and myself, we've got about 27 or so of these cars, many parts cars.
I have a 1973 280se 4.5, and this is my first (of many) d-jet that smokes at several times. I really thought it was oil because the smoke is blueish white. But so many of the symptoms are like what you describe in this and the prior video. For example: lots of smoke when starting, even if starting hot. Also, when I smash the gas it will smoke. If I start the car and let it idle down, it will stop smoking, and stay that way if I drive it like a granny. But if I take it out in the highway and try to "Italian tuneup" the car, it will start smoking like a chimney. I only do this at night when the roads are open and I can't see the smoke until I go to a bright gas station and say "I gotta get the hell outta here!".
My timing chain timing is good. The cam lobes look messed up, and I noticed the driver exhaust cams are wiped clean all around...
    ...

SO here's what I think is going on. It sounds to me like you have a worn camshaft journal, likely on the right side (pass. side) of the engine. All of the oil is probably being dumped into cylinders 3 and 4, causing your smoke issue. If you replace the cam and journals, replace them with 75 and earler m117 parts. You must do both!

Thank you for your response Pierre! 1975 and earlier... d-jet stuff. Yeah... ok. We've got a spare set of nice heads, a spare engine on the floor, a parts 73 280sel 4.5, and even a complete 75 450slc. Oh, and the 350sl 4-speed too. I originally bought that with the intention of putting the transmission in my 450slc 5.0 convertible and putting the heads on my w108. But honestly I can't bear the thought of tearing apart a 350sl 4-speed that we may be able to make run and drive.
I will give a go at adjusting the valves and check these journals. I document most of the stuff on benzworld under the handle "Fonzi".
Thanks for the great info Pierre. I sure do like your stuff more than the other MB guy. ;-)

I got a 74 450sl that isn't outputting the fuel injection pulses. It has the inputs from the distributor. The powers and ground to the control unit will easily handle 3 amps of power. I checked the fuel relay wire (brown with white stripe) and it appears to come on very slowly. Any idea what other inputs it needs to start strobing the injectors?

BTW: we've got a running parts car 1976 280slc d-jet that will be parted out. Rare beast indeed. I'd love to see this stuff go to a worthy cause.

I have a 1973 450 SL. 9 times out of 10 it will start first pop and run perfectly…then occasionally it will be harder to start…run rough ..low , lumpy ..almost stall at idle and miss on acceleration…if i leave it for a couple of hours it will run ok. It’s always had a lumpy idle. This varies.??

My W108 is having the same symptom you describe around 5:45 - misfiring sensation at idle. Will try to clean the trigger points in hopes that it solves it before trying to replace it.

My engine stalls immediately after pressing down the gas pedal all the way. It does sound a lot like a problem with the throttle position switch. Are these expensive / easy to replace?

Dear Pierre, do you have a video About how to adjust the triggerpoints for the injection?
Or are they going automaticly with the ignitionpoints?
    Thanks advance!

great video on explaining the system . still at a loss why my M110 d-jet 280se 73 only gets 7-8mpg! replaced aux air valve,Map and ecu, checked timing and ignition and CO is 2.1 at idle. no smoke starts first time drives well but cost £1 a mile with UK petrol prices. go figure..

I really need some info about the air fuel adjustment screw that is on the actual ecu for a 450sl 1976. Any help would be appreciated.

    • @mercedesclassicswithpierre1753
      @mercedesclassicswithpierre1753  5 лет назад

the air fuel ratio screw primarily adjusts the idle mixture. Your 450sl is likely a 1975, as 76 would be k jetronic. do you have a month and build date for your car? please email me at mbownersforlife@bellsouth.net and we can continue this discussion.

the other style intake was for the k-jetronic?
