Brilliant information, Pierre - thank you. This information may explain why a fire recently broke out in our 1972 Mercedes 350SL which was quickly extinguished. "This new Mercedes 7.5 mm fuel hose is more expensive than other hoses but is cheap insurance against an engine fire." Could not agree more! In addition, we noted your advice about "KEEP YOUR CLAMPS" and "No worm clamps - ONLY ever use genuine Mercedes clamps on fuel injection hose." Thank you also for this tip. Thirdly, we also noted your advice about replacing the injection seals with new ones - but only with genuine Mercedes seals. All excellent advice, Pierre. Again, thank you. We will inspect the damage to assess whether the incorrect fuel hose and/or clamps were installed by a previous owner.

Great video Pierre and Thanks! Harry Metcalf in a Harry's Garage video featured a beautiful early light blue R107 which was serviced by The SL Shop somewhere in the UK. Of course you know what happened-the car burned because the so-called experts neglected to replace the fuel injection hoses.

Harry's Garage had some fire damage with their 350SL , hmmm, I wonder WHY ? I have known since the eighties that those fuel hoses are a fire danger, but mind you : ALSO the hoses from the fuel pump or the pressure regulator to the fuel rail.
Petar: I have 1972 280 SEL 4.5 where can I purchase rubber boots that cover the injectors. Mine are dryer up and cracked. Can you be so kind to provide part number for injector seals and for the house if you have. Thank you in advance Pete
Do these recommendations extend to the Goodyear/Continental Instagrip EFI hose? I've had excellent results with it on high-pressure non-MB applications - zero cracking or dry rot as is common with the el-cheapo hoses (which I rage out on every time I see them with the same fervor), but it sounds as if you're referring to the same stuff. Curious - would be very interested to know. Most recently, I've been using Gates Barricade on US cars (same stuff as Earl's Vaporguard) and it's phenomenal. Sadly, it's not available in 7.5mm, only SAE sizes. (And please, for the love of god, to anyone reading this, don't try using 5/16" in place of 7.5mm hose - 0.4mm _is_ enough to result in a high pressure leak and fire.
I can't express my disgust with cheap fuel (and other type) of hoses that don't last and are a pain to work with. Not to mention worm clamps made for garden hoses...that should tell you something. I feel the same way. $38 for a meter is not much considering you won't be replacing it for another 5-10 years or longer.
Engine caught fire 2 days ago because of a bad injector seal. Was in a garage parking on a slant that had the gas flow right to the header. Any tricks to removing the injectors and replacing the seals??
As long as you use the highest quality efi hose , foreign or domestic , you where good .During my working life , seen ideal worm clamps , never had an issue with them . Some of the right kind of clamps would bottom out and not been tight enough , causing fuel seepage with a cold engine . The hot hard to no start is caused by the coolant sensor reading a higher temp , this cause the fuel mix to lean out too much . if you watch the temp gauge in the car after a hot run , it will climb next to the red .When you restart the car it goes down fast . That EFI system was not that great , poor fuel mix control . CIS that came after , especially 1980 on , with oxy sensor was much better . The newer HFM was really it .
