I remember this match very well -- it was the last great Guga match before his injuries became too much to handle. His 2001 summer was the best!

It's sad that his career as a top tennis player lasted only 4 years, Roland Garros 1997 until this game.

Besides Kuerten, Max Mirnyi was in great shape and it Was one of the best matches he played ever in singles. For doubles specialist it was fantastic performance.

Indeed! He had a hip surgery later that year and he never recovered from it.
You can say his prime was springtime 1997 to fall 2001, playing his best at the age of 20, 23 and 24 in 1997, 2000 and 2001.
He turned 25 a couple days after this match, and his career was basically over afterwards

Grata.

the quality of that match was astonishing!!! normally when you have a ratio of winners hit from both sides below 30% you can say "ok, it wasn't a boring match", when you have below 40% of winners you can say "high quality match"... Kuerten & Mirnyi produced almost 50% of winners!

100% agree!! I still remember that match, which I watched live when I was teenager and fanatic tennis fan. I was up-to-date with all major tournaments on ATP and WTA Tour for few years watching mainly on Eurosport. Better than watching films sometimes. And this particular one was so amazing for me! Not even a quarterfinal, "just" 2nd round, but what an extremely good level of playing and stamina from both players! What a drama...

Saw the entire game live , after the second ser thought was over. Guga had a heart of a Lion winning the next three sets and beating the beast Mirnyi . Mirny had a big serve and was a hell of a player. That was the last time we saw the real Guga on court , after the tournament he had his first surgery and never was the same.

Grande confronto

The shotmaking in this match was simply ridiculous, especially Kuerten's backhand.
This being said, I remember MacEnroe inviting Kafelnikov (who just won his match) into the commentary booth.
Anybody has a link? The reason I'm asking is that Kafelnikov, for once, sounded funny and Insightful.

Mirnyi was a talented singles player as well. This was the second year in a row he lost a tough 5 set match at the us open. In 2000 he lost to Magnus Norman after having a number of match points and leading 2-0. Against Kuerten here, again so close to winning. Pity he didn’t win at least one of these classic matches.
