Federer made the forgivable mistake of continuing to attack the backhand. Works against other opponents but not Guga. This backhand is the main reason Guga won slams and became number 1.
How good was Kuerten? Everyone forgets so quickly. That's a clay court single hand backhand, absolutely perfect footwork and hip twist, huge weapon but also he hit groundstrokes so deep, similar to Agassi. Slow courts, very entertaining tennis many thanks
It's funny to read all this modern love for Guga's backhand, because in the late 90's, it was said that it was too timing-dependent/ offered too little room for error, and that he had "an awful lot of swing off both sides to have much hope for success on faster surfaces". But in '99 he made it to at least the Quarters of Wimbledon, USO, Indian Wells and RG. Then of course came the Masters Cup run beating Magnus Norman, Kafelnekov, Sampras and Agassi all on fast indoor surface to end the year #1.

How far the Roger's serve has gone... Also funny to think of an era of questionable line calls...
2 of the best players in the world and their backahands just unreal.
6:09 This is the shot Federer needed against Djokovic in the final of Wimbledon 2019 when he was match point serving 40-15
Yup but it is very risky
he hit this one late, just like in 2019
@@brunoalves5790 that wasnt late bro 😂😂...that is too early 😂....
@@joelsuraj2501 not sure if you play tennis my friend. But when you miss a a down the line or inside out shot wide, it means you hit the ball too late. He missed the contact point. Even thought it was a winner, he miss hit it.
@@brunoalves5790 bro I play nationals so chill 😂😂...what u said is true but that doesnt have to be the case all the tym...when the return is good this can happen bcoz u dont have much tym...not bcoz u are late which was exactly what happened in Wimby 2019
Guga #1 in the world felt so amazing being a Brazilian. Thanks for the great memories Guga ❤
Never seen this guy before but his backhand is unbelievable the things I'd do to be able to hit a ball like that
We miss you Guga!
🇧🇷
Sensacional!
There's a one handed backhand that gave Federer a run for his money. Guga is a freaking legend
Kuerten had the best backhand in tennis history! Fact!
It should be illegal that Guga retired so early
Stopped by hip injury, otherwise he could have stayed n°1 and probably won more Roland Garros and maybe some slams on hard court like US Open
As B Borg unfortunately...
Never seen anyone playing cross court one handed backhand so well than Guga!
Guga’s backhand is the most impressive.
I simply ❤ seeing these single handed backhand, Guga was impressive.
7:51 a few ridiculous forehands from Federer. Unloads on the down the line, then the big CC one does the damage (this one looks a bit like a Djokovic forehand) and then finishing with the signature inside out. The full repertoire from one side of the court to the other.
Federer's big weakness during his career were the wasted break points. It's incredible how he missed the break points generated against big players
backhand is amazing
Guga's backhand was so sweet, and Fed was already doing damage with his forehand.
Federer just didn't have the game to beat this guy. The way he was moved around the court, not only in this match, was amazing.
Federer was still not in his prime here and his movement not matured yet but you can clearly see that he could've also won this match, it was a close match.
Fenomenal!
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
GUGA'S BACKHAND WAS A PHENOMENON
Controversial (and maybe biased opinion): Guga's backhand is better than Federer's
Backhand Guga just amazing technical
Best backhand EVER!
Imagine a 12 year old Brazilian boy that started to play tennis just one year before his first Roland Garros title... It was just amazing! And it totally influenced my style, I played agressive and loved to hit backhand. It was so sad that he retired so early.
We love you Guga!
Kuerten one handed backhand is 1 of the best of all times !!!
we know Fed how great he was but never knew that Kuerten so beautifully played
Loved to watch Guga play with my dad and support him. But this match is a masterpiece. Awesome performance.
Federer made the forgivable mistake of continuing to attack the backhand. Works against other opponents but not Guga. This backhand is the main reason Guga won slams and became number 1.
Best singlehanded backhand ever: Kuerten and Wawrinka
Guga has the Best one hand backhand ever 👏👏👏
How good was Kuerten? Everyone forgets so quickly. That's a clay court single hand backhand, absolutely perfect footwork and hip twist, huge weapon but also he hit groundstrokes so deep, similar to Agassi. Slow courts, very entertaining tennis many thanks
What an amazing match from 2 legends. I miss Guga and I miss Federer, The GOAT.
A beautiful backhands' battle!
I love to see Guga here a legend
It's funny to read all this modern love for Guga's backhand, because in the late 90's, it was said that it was too timing-dependent/ offered too little room for error, and that he had "an awful lot of swing off both sides to have much hope for success on faster surfaces".
But in '99 he made it to at least the Quarters of Wimbledon, USO, Indian Wells and RG.
Then of course came the Masters Cup run beating Magnus Norman, Kafelnekov, Sampras and Agassi all on fast indoor surface to end the year #1.
The master cup in Lisbon was played on one of the slowest indoor hard court during that era.
@@jliang70 "slow indoor hard" is like "quick clay", but yeah, it wasn't carpet.
The best of Brazil!
Nunca mais tivemos alguém como ele.
Que jogo !! Grande guga ! 🙌🙌
