Epic match. Russell really put the already 2 time French Open champion.Gustavo Kuerten to work in this instant classic here. Kuerten winning his 3rd and final French Open title, his 3rd in just five years, with Moya and Agassi filling in the gap in 1998 and 1999 respectively, and each of these 2 winning their only French Open, Agassi, exactly 10 years after Michael Chang. Russel sure gave the crowd their money's worth here in 2001, the last French Open before 9/11. The years have gone fast, I forgotten just how close Russell came here to dethroning Kuerten, the 1997, 2000 and 2001 French Open winner and easily a Hall of Fame athlete. Russell was good when he was.
You prolly dont care at all but does anybody know of a way to get back into an Instagram account?? I was stupid lost my password. I would appreciate any tips you can give me
@Oakley Anderson Thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm trying it out now. Takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Guga literally rose from the ashes!! What a mental and physical match that was, Russel displayed his best tennis with close to 0 unforced errors. Impressive stuff from both of them! Wish I could rewatch it in HD.
Few to know this but that was the first heart drawing before the famous one at the final. It's so emotional even after so many years. Talk about a player with huge character and personality!
Guga Ídolo !!! As novas gerações precisam ver ele jogando pra entender a dimensão de seus feitos. Orgulho nacional que dificilmente será igualado algum dia.

Guy was 2 sets down, serving 2x5 in the third. Confirmed his service, then had to break Russel, who had a match point serving 40x30. The rest is history. I’m mesmerized by Kuerten’s stillness. It’s at Nadal or Djokovic stillness level, wasn’t it?
Kuerten filled with injuries, months away from retirement best prime Fed. We can speculate how great he is if not for injuries but… 3 RG, no1, ATP finals beating Agassi Sampras aint bad at all.
Thanks for the summary of this classic match. I ask Roland Garros and the French Tennis Federation to post this full match in one of their RUclips channels. Thanks.
Kuerten did play Federer at the FO in 2004 with Kuerten (five years older than Federer) winning in straight sets. Maybe that gives you an indication of how a hypothetical Kuerten/Nadal match would go.
There is no way even peak Guga could beat Nadal, I think 2017 Final was the peak Nadal among 13 crowns. Winning 5times on local tournament is not easy task, however 13 times beating Federer, Novak, Wawrinka will give no other description. Depth, spin, and determinations are far beyond what Guga possesed.
@@hyunhosuh9912 I disagree, i think Nadal plays against one of, if not the worst clay court gen of all time. U cant compare the post 2005 gen with players like Kuerten, Muster, Chang, Kafelknikov, Bruguera, Moya, Ferrero, Agassi, Courier, Gomez, to name only champions. I could make an even bigger list with excelent clay players that didnt won RG. Roger is good on clay, not great, Novak the same and the others dont even deserve to be compared with those names. Thats my view on why Nadal got 13 titles: facing a real weak gen of clay court players.
I wonder how close that forehand that Guga hit on match point that looked to be on the back of the line or out was. It was so close. That was a potential life changing moment for Mike a Russell, literally centimeters away from a different life.
Unfortunately, Guga has never reached his full potential, at the end of 2001 he started with a chronic hip injury which made him forfeit tournaments and decrease performance over the next years. In 2004 he attempted a last try doing a hip surgery (similar to Andy Murray surgery), but he could not never recover his old level of 99-00-01. Officially Guga retired in 2008 after a second surgery in the hips, but in fact, 2001 was his last year playing healthy.
To hit the line when down match points... The story says that Guga sent Russell Thank You flowers. This one match balanced Russell's books for a year or two.

Hello, thanks for these Roland Garros Classics. When do they post this Kuerten vs Russel match and other complete Guga matches at Roland Garros from the years 2000 and 2001? I ask this of the French Tennis Federation, as well as the organizers of the Roland Garros Tournament. Guga has already been honored but he needs this tribute on your RUclips channels. Thank you.
Total Package: 1) Nadal 2) Borg Thats for sure. But Prime for Prime, i am not sure if Borg really would beat Kuerten. Yes Borg von the FO 6 times, but remember Kuerten won it 3 times at the age of 20, 23 and 24, and shortly after his 25th birthday he had a hip injury and never recovered from it, at least not for Best of 5 tournaments. If Guga would have been fit until 2005, i am very sure he would have done well in the FO 2002, 2003 and 2004. He had Ferrero´s number (winner 2003), and guys like A. Costa (winner 2002) and Gaudio (winner 2004) would not be the favorite against him. So Kuerten could also have won the FO 6 times. And Prime for Prime i would say he would be the best opponent Nadal would ever faced, better then Federer, Djokovic, Wawrinka, Thiem, Söderling, Puerta, Ferrer, etc.

Guga was so fun to watch. I love his one handed backhand, it is an absolute thing of beauty. What a great comeback!
Agreed. Wawrinka, Federer, him, korda, muster. These are probably best single handed backhands of all times.
