Crazy to think this was truly the last great French Open Final. Only French Open final to have gone 5 sets this century until Djokovic-Tsitsipas in 21’
Yeah, after he was still recovering from the injury that he got when playing against Lucho Horna. Coria didn't want to risk his shoulder and did that weak smash that Nadal used in his benefit...
I never really saw Coria play. I did see highlights of Nadal v. Coria in Roma. That was a thrilling match from start to finish. Coria moves the ball really well and is fast on the court. I think Gaudio got lucky with this win. 2005 begins with the Nadal domination of Roland Garros. There will be a 15th Roland Garros title.
Are you crazy? What do you mean you didnt see him play? Didnt you watch the first two sets? He was unplayable, doing everything right and getting to all the balls. The thing is Gaudio was extremely nervous during those first two sets and then in the third he was able to loosen up a little bit and enjoy the game more, without so much pressure. And from then on the key for him was staying focused and trying to anticipate Coria's movements and shots better, so coria felt more and more frustrated. By the middle of the fifth set you can tell he was completely loose and confident, he just had to endure. Coria on the other hand had dug his own grave at this point by giving away the fourth set and now the match was completely different. To this day no one really knows what went through Coria's mind from the fourth set on. Its hard to understand, cause with his level of talent the match couldve been his. But I think another key factor here was the rivalry between them and the fact that they despised each other then. Gaudio could manage that psycology way better than Coria, and that's why he ends up losing. The match was absolutely a mind battle, given that they already knew each other so much on the court; they read all each other's movements and intentions. Coria choked, and that's that.

No wonder Guillermo Coria has no Grand Slam Singles title that could highlight his whole career resume as one of the most talented professional tennis player ever to grace the tennis court, because his inability to maintain his composure and stay mentally tough under presssure for long gruelling hours of play is his biggest downfall. I don't know if it's 💯 just the lack of concentration [because that doesnt make sense to someone who has the ability to focus and dictating the majority of the rallies point by point, from the beginning to the end as soon as they realise the excellent level of their performance on the given day will boosts more belief and self confidence rather than being too carried away by the outcome of winning a little too much.] It seems to me though that mentally speaking he is probably just like most of us on average, or slightly weaker in average standard. Guillermo Coria had choked so bad during such a big time in this match, his talent and capability to play such an outstanding performance against his other opponent is never been the biggest question mark by many, whether the opponent's ranking is higher or lower than him. He is perhaps known for his tennis skills and sickening style of play especially on clay, he can even defeat some of his opponents who has one or more slams with a convincing victory at any given day especially on his fav clay courts, and yet somehow once he doesnt have to play as an underdog, or maybe at some POINT of a crucial match, his winning mindset can be distracted by an underdog who plays really poorly at first thinking that the initial high respect towards an opponent has waned down as the match progress, from the feeling of being highly impressed and amazed by his opponent's achievement for reaching the final stage against all odds, to the thought of disbelief and doubting his opponent's skill and capability that propelled Gaudio's RG 2004 JOURNEY TO THE FINAL. He just failed to fight his own demon mentally, i just could not help myself to pointing out that middle set moments where he still gained majority of the momentum before letting HIS fierce rival and OWN compatriot to control the final sets and winning the match. Part of the reason Guillermo Coria has himself choked here is also due to the fact that their hostile relationship with one another may have had contributed by his loss to remain focus as he initially thought he is doing everything right during the match UNTIL he let his conscience slips little by little as the match went on a lot longer than expected. What a huge loss, thanks to his arrogance and over confidence. You may have all the biggest weapons in tennis as your best trademark of arsenal, but if you dont have a strong will to win, if you couldn't endure the intense amount of high pressure in those critical moments,if there is lack of self belief, and if somehow you couldnt control your own fear and keep the same composure to play your shot without worrying that it will miss, then there is A very little chance for you to become a slam champion. No matter how big and complete it is when people talk about the gamestyle OF your tennis.
well damn.... tennis is a precision sport. one little hesitation and your shot is out or hitting the net. precision requires mental strenght and composure and insane amount of consistency at this level. he simply didnt have enough of it in the tank and the man who did was lifting the trophy that day.
