At TB Lujiza Cemetery in East London in the Eastern Cape, Mbewukazi Ntungwa searches for her grandmother's grave. Years of municipal mismanagement have violated the dignity of the dead and their relatives; overgrown vegetation and piles of rubbish make it difficult for families to find the tombstones of their departed loved ones. But even more shocking are the shacks and informal dwellings that have been built inside the cemetery, some of them directly above the remnants of headstones which mark the final resting place of the deceased. People living on the dead... In Buffalo City Municipality, derelict cemeteries are common. A few kilometres away, the lone headstone of political stalwart Alcott Skweyi Gwentshe lies in dense undergrowth, a startling monument to neglect. Carte Blanche investigates.

The whole program was summed up in the last 10 seconds. When a resident casually urinates in front of the cameras on some loved ones grave. If there was ever a bigger insult, i have not heard of it.

I had to bury my mother in the middle of an unkept cemetry, had to pay the funeral parlor extra to cut the grass a bit so they could bring the casket in. And to this day not even an apology even after bring this to their attention. All these parties are the same.

If people don’t respect the living, how can anyone expect them to respect the dead?
Just to put things into perspective... If they paid a certain company R1million to maintain all 33 cemeteries and 1 crematorium... And that company does this cycle every 4 months, the municipality would have spent R30million in that decade. There is a whole R20million in excess that is not accounted for here and these people are lucky to maybe have the grass cut every 3 years.
Why does no official check that the work is actually done !!!

Then, bcm increased the electricity surcharges on paying customers. Added around R430 per month on pre paying customers, and added 700 to 67, thus post paid customers now pay 767 per month, just to enrich the bcm crooks.
And locals keep stealing in these informal areas, went you report it and it gets cut they toy toy on the rare occasion.

This is so painful. But I’m also side eying the locals. Growing up we would go to the graves of our relatives and clean it up ourselves. Even now we do the same and I’m talking about going to a gravesite also in the cities. Government needs to do better there’s no denying it but the dead are ours we also need to play a part in up keeping their final resting place.

Such actions demonstrate a dangerous erosion of humanity and cultural values. “Those who desecrate the dead show contempt not only for the past but for humanity itself.” We must restore dignity to these spaces, for “the way we treat the dead reflects how we value the living.”

My hometown of hammanskraal has some of the most consistent maintenance of its graveyard. When I see this its so sad.
