1:28 "Maya Angelou is prohibited because we're not allowed to talk about rape in school." 1. 2:58 "Coaches cover-up star players raping freshmen after the dance" 2. My friend in my theater class did this poem as a monologue, however when she asked our teacher for approval she said to change the word "rape" in 1 to "her experiences" . She also said to cut out 2 entirely. The irony here is ludicrous.
My English class just did a whole unit on Maya Angelou and the rape was not left out, but I did notice it was kinda glossed over? Like, she didn't elaborate on how awful rape is and that nobody should ever do it to another person she kinda just went like "ok so in this chapter she got raped... and moving on to the next chapter-" like um ok
It's so annoying to hear this great message and read the comments to find people only taking about how "Cara brought them here" and other people missing the message entirely...
Stop bitching. No one's missing the message, they came here out of their own free will and are happy that someone - who just happens to be celebrity Cara Delevinge - pointed them in the right direction

The part about the thrift shopping is so true...about 95% of my wardrobe comes from thrift shops because we can't afford to go to the mall or department stores
Kelechi Alfred you seriously have wonderful video's. I'm so glad to meet you! I can tell that you are a deep thinker and will be looking forward to seeing your achievements here as well!
I like how conservatives are only pointing out the mistake of saying "the bones of the hispanics" and completely ignoring the relevancy of the 3 whole other minutes of valid information. Keep it up. It totally wont stab you in the back later on
And they're also commenting how "we read these books in school" or "anyone can buy these books". The point of this video was to show how it is more taboo to know and that instead you should just keep quiet and ignore the things that are wrong.
+Fardin Salam very very true. Sorry for making a hasty generalization, but really, it feels like these people are ignoring the main message of the performance
+kataigidajj I raised that point, I'm not a "conservative", I'm not from the states, I have no political opinion of what's going on in the US because I don't really know enough to care. One thing I do care about is history, and to compare the hispanics that existed at the same time as the slaves and natives is NOT a very "liberal" thing to do. It reveals the agenda of these people is not to promote a factual argument but to promote a political agenda. I believe that presenting Hispanics in the same category as slaves and natives is deliberate misinformation to promote an anti white-middle-america, as a non american that's the tone I got and sometimes one small bit of misinformation like that is a giveaway, people on the far right do it ll the time.
+J Rton ok fair enough the hispanics came over from Europe to South and Central America.. but they also occupied the area of texas, new mexico and california.. but were driven out by Americans.. and President James Polk incited war with Mexico in 1846 and forced them to surrender. In the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo Mexico had to cede California, New Mexico territory and Texas - the US gained around 1/2 million square miles of territory. Polk and a lot of the southerners wanted to keep pushing for the rest of Mexico however Northern powers in Congress blocked this. Attempts were also made on Nicaragua and Cuba. So in my eyes although the massacres of the Spanish conquistadores are also horrific and just another example of european colonisation, this still by no means justifies American settlers pushing out and killing the Mexicans for the land they had already settled on. Also this is poetry, of course it has an agenda, and being a non-american white girl, i don't feel its promoting an anti-white america. Issues need to be raised like this. With Fox news and all those news channels so often blasting right wing propaganda into peoples ears, personally I think its a very good thing for young kids, boys and girls, to listen to something so blunt like this. People can't learn about their country's history, or how not to behave, if all the sensitive issues are constantly swept under the rug.
Katie Orr "Their country's history" Their country was NOT built on the bones of Hispanics. That is the statement i have the key issue with. Trying to convince people to think "oh those poor hispanics" in the same breath as mentioning slaves and indigenous peoples of that period. You're talking two colonisers slugging it out over stolen land, and you think its fair to equate them to slaves and the indigenous? Oh so because some politician wanted to expand further, that somehow contributes to the argument that the United States was built "on the bones of the hispanics"? The hispanics were NOT victims in the colonial americas lol.
I say they killed it 110% they were so powerful you can hear it in there voices. They mean what they say and I love how they push it to the limit. They could be speaking out for so many people and helping them find there voice. I just wanna thank them for showing their voices!
+Alex Sabau I can understand what you are saying but lets just be glad that people like Cara are willing to use their power to shed light on important topics. I'm glad that people who otherwise wouldn't have seen this now have and that includes myself.
For any non spoken English people who are fighting to understand everything this 3 incredible girls say: Here in America and every single state they have a set of standards for every subject, a collection of lessons that the teacher’s required to teach by the end of the term. But the greatest lessons you will ever teach us will not come from your syllabus. The greatest lesssons you will ever teach us you will not even remember. You never told us what we weren’t allowed to say. We just learned how to hold our tongues.
Now somewhere in America there is a child holding a copy of ‘Catcher in the Rye’ and there is a child holding a gun. But only one of these things have been banned by their state government and, it’s not the one that can rip through flesh, it’s the one that says “‘F’ You” on more pages than one. Because we must control what people say. how they think. And if they want to become the overseer of their own selves then we’ll show them a real one.
And somewhere in America there is a child sitting at his mother’s computer reading the home page of the KKK’s website and that’s open to the public. But that child will have never read ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ because his school has banned it for it’s use of the ‘N’-word. Maya Angelou is prohibited because we’re not allowed to talk about rape in school. We are taught that just because something happens doesn’t mean we are to talk about it. They build us brand new shopping malls so we’ll forget where we’re really standing - ON THE BONES of the Hispanics, ON THE BONES of the slaves, ON THE BONES of the Native Americans, ON THE BONES of those who fought just to speak.
Transcontinental railroads to Japanese internment camps. There are things missing from our history books. But we were taught that it is better to be silent than to make them uncomfortable. Somewhere in America private school girls search for hours through boutiques trying to find the prom dress of their dreams; while kids on the south side spend hours searching through the lost and found ’cause winter’s coming soon and that’s the only jacket they have. Kids are late to class for working the midnight shift. They give awards for best attendance but not for keeping your family off the streets.
These kids will call your music ghetto. They will tell you you don’t talk right. Then they’ll get in the backseat of a car with all their friends singing how they’re “‘Bout that life” and “We can’t stop”. Source: LYBIO.net Somewhere in America schools are promoting self confidence while they whip out their scales and shout out your body fat percentage in class. Where the heftier girls are hiding away and the slim fit beauties can’t help but giggle with pride. The preppy kids go thrift shopping because they think it sounds fun. But we go ’cause that’s all we’ve got money for ’cause mama works for the city; mama only gets paid once a month.
Somewhere in America a girl is getting felt up by a grown man on a subway. She’s still in her school uniform and that’s part of the appeal. It’s hard to run in knee socks and Mary Jane’s and all her male teachers know it, too. Coaches cover up star players raping freshmen after the dance. Women are killed for rejecting a date but God forbid I bring my girlfriend to prom. A girl is blackout drunk at the after party. Take a picture before her wounds wake her. How many pixels is your sanity worth? What’s a 4.0 to a cold jury? What’d you learn in class today? Don’t talk loud, don’t speak loud, keep your hands to yourself, keep your head down. Keep your eyes on your own paper. If you don’t know the answer fill in C.
This reminds me of a Poem called "Welcome to Society" by Erin Hanson, and it goes like this "Welcome to society, We hope you enjoy your stay, And please feel free to be yourself, As long as it's in the right way, Make sure you love your body, Not too much or we'll tear you down, We'll bully you for smiling, And then wonder why you frown, We'll tell you that you're worthless, That you shouldn't make a sound, And then cry with all the others, As you're buried in the ground, You can fall in love with anyone, As long as it's who we choose, And we'll let you have your opinions, But please shape them to our views, Welcome to society, We promise that we won't deceive, And one more rule now that you're here, There's no way you can leave."
My creative writing teacher showed us this during class and the raw emotion in it made me break down. There is so much wrong with this country and none of it is getting much better, but there are still people like my father who insist that “America is perfect”.
I saw a lot of really good arguments within their performance. I love that they are getting people talking, because I find that the majority of society chooses to distance themselves from anything that makes them feel uncomfortable. Good for them.
They didn't produce any good arguments, they regurgitated existing societal problems in a performance in order to invoke thought. The information was stretched to make it more powerful than it should be. America is a fine country.
Hold on a second, you don't have to tell me what I need to be thankful for. I kept my comment short and sweet and therefore was not trying to instigate conversations like this. I'm not going to debate on this. Of course there are countries out there who have it much worse than others! Everyone should know that, unless they live under a rock. But to tell me that I'm not grateful for what I have, that just blows my mind. Thanks for the insight, but don't go on a rant about what a terrible person I am for disagreeing with the word "fine". I know its the internet, but my god. I'm so surprised, with just a few simple words you immediately go to the idea that I wasn't grateful...
I think it’s empowering and change doesn’t come from one video bu rather little pushes of things we here and experiences we have and every time people stand up like this it creates a tiny grain of Change but that just may be me being hopeful
They have no idea how much they have inspired me. This one video opened up my wind to things that have been locked away and all of like to say is thank you
@@hammeringhank5271 that’s your opinion. And don’t you have something better to do then to spread hate about three girls speaking the truth and showing all the fucked things in this world?
1:54 hits hard. I went to a private Christian school growing up and our history book was white washed. We never got past early America and we where taught that even tho Columbus did horrific things oh that’s ok cuz he “founded” America so it’s All forgivable. Whenever there was a school shooting we wouldn’t acknowledge it it would only be and let the families who lost people be ok now let’s go praise jesus and sing worship songs and they never went farther then that. I’m so thankful for my teacher who teaches me right now because he wants to teach us about current events and stuff that other teachers wouldn’t teach us. If there’s a school shooting or anything we take part of class to learn about what happened and to acknowledge who died and what happened. There was so much stuff missing from my history book we spent more time learning about indentured servants then slaves. I was never taught what I am being taught today I was held back from that knowledge because apparently it wasn’t “school appropriate” teach us about how Columbus was a great guy but never spend much time on learning about slavery.
You can practically hear the mic drop at the end. These girls are my heroes. I had chills from the beginning and by the end there was a lump in my throat.
This is but a fraction of the knowledge I live with every day, then a question rises: "What am I gonna do about it?" No answers come out, and sanity starts to break.
***** Pretty much the only answer I ever come up with. Still, some people I come across are just universal asses and then all of that goes out the window.
I think it starts with talking to our young people about it because once they become adults they're more set in their ways. Talking to conservative adults, particularly white men, about issues of sexism an racism can be extremely difficult if you want to make any headway with them.
Thank you. It's so refreshing to hear the truth spoken. The soundwaves are devoid of that in the US these days. I feel for every child in America who has to face this reality. This is a nation of contradictions.
Um.. I went to a crappy charter school. So I wouldn't know, but.. They SERIOUSLY don't talk about the Japanese internment camps in school?! They spend WEEKS talking about the holocaust.
Actually, no. I read about it in Lisa See's Shanghai Girls when I was a kid. The teacher spoke more about the war itself. Are you kidding? Any kind of terrible things that Americans did in American history are either glossed over or omitted. They don't give us a CHANCE to admit we make mistakes, we're just under the impression we don't make them.
Zetsubel No wonder people never take me seriously when I mention that. Which isn't often, but.. yea. They're making people ignorant on purpose, I thought everyone was just stupid ;-;
It has nothing to do with the subject, but probably one of the coolest classes my middle school ever offered was a summer class about the world's most nefarious serial killers. It was all about their crimes and exploring their psyches and trying to figure out the why of it all.
Why? It is just another victimhood narrative where people claim to be interested in changing the world but they just do word games and blame games instead of providing any actual solutions to issues. Nobody has to watch this.
I love this, I've watched videos of them speaking before and every time I see a new one I click on it. Happy to see they're getting more attention finally!
This made me cry because its absolutely well said, I'm just in love with they way have said it. I take my life for granted and this made me realize something so much better. People need to know this, and make a change in the world ASAP.
I just heard about this video on Instagram, and I'm so glad I decided to watch it. This is such a powerful message and these three girls seem very aware of the world around them. I love to see people around my age doing great things like this.
It doesn't matter how you got here, or how early or late you are, what's important is passing it on to more people and sharing it so we are informed and can make a change.
This is very interesting and passionate and so I have wanted to discuss it. So I scrolled down to the comments but the only thing I found there, was that people were brought here by Cara. And that's OK, but if you don't have anything else to say don't repeat it because you're disabling an intelligent discussion to happen. Don't you get it?
These girls are so powerful and so rite about the part where most adults tell us to stay quiet bout certain things and that the most important lessons taught are forgotten
Coming from England, it's almost frightening to see the degree to which the USA is damaged. English textbooks have a tendency to white-wash, but from what I've heard it's worse in America. Things we experience over here almost seem to go to the extreme over there. It's sad that, in a society where the West revels in it's ignorant views of dazzling contemporaneity, there are so many things wrong that could potentially be put to right quite easily. Rape culture, censorship, unnecessary damaging of the mentalities of the young- could be eradicated, if only they were more widely acknowledged. This is a powerful video. It's great. And it's important.
Rape culture, in the West specifically. BAHAHA, that's a good one! XD Go live in South Africa or the Middle East for a few years and then talk about Western 'rape culture'.
I think, perhaps, I phrased my point badly. The West acknowledges rape culture in those areas, but doesn't recognise it in within it's own borders. Rape culture is more prevalent in the Middle East, there's no denying that. But since this was targeted at Americans- as in 'Somewhere in America'- it's Americas inability to recognise it that constitutes to it being an issue. Does that make sense? Or am I rambling (there's a solid chance I'm rambling, I have a tendency to do that)
HeyitsJaz There is no 'rape culture' in the US. Unless you're talking about young boys being raped by their female teachers or men being raped in prison, both of which are treated as a joke. But male on female rape? Always wrong, always illegal in the US.
I came here because of Facebook, but that doesn't matter. This gave me chills. I love this more than words could ever explain. Amazing, these girls are why I still have faith that not everyone is a mindless zombie trapped in their own world of social media and world drama. Thank you, whoever you girls are. Thanks, is all I can say in logical wording.
To people who say guns aren't the problem between 2014-2015 over 350,000 people have been killed by guns. Between 1914-2015 3,000 have been killed my terrorists. I don't know about you but to me those statistics don't add up.
Is it the gun that kills the person or the person holding the gun? Think about that. Also, statistics have proven when guns are allowed to be legally carried around, the crime rate goes down.
+Nadia Makmak obviously a person does need to pull the trigger, but if guns weren't so accessible it would be much harder to get one or find other means to kill. Guns are less regulated than driving. A teenager who wants a car has to take lessons and pass multiple tests, including a practical one. But any teenager who wants a gun can get one, and thus has the power to kill. Ultimately, the person is doing the killing but the gun allows them to.
@@cloud9726 they are very childish and not bringing up issues that can actually be fixed by the state. In fact half of the things they complained abt are cultural problems and schools can’t do anything abt it.

this is amazing. these girls are so empowered and strong. i cannot believe how much their voices can affect a single person. everybody in the world needs to hear this. maybe then people will change
Can I? Nope, sorry. Guess I am too annoyed by the victimhood narrative and see not how this change anything. Worse, their complain that they would have learned this behaviour seems to imply that there was an intent to teach them that, which seems to me like paranoid thinking. Don't get me wrong, some of the social issues they mention are a problem, but many points they make are questionable, and sadly they provide no solutions, so it is overall rather useless.
Drudenfusz You're useless. You speaking agains't this is useless. Your existence is useless. You are of no use to society, you are of no use to anyone, you're no use to yourself. What have you done that this girls haven't? Nothing. Because you are useless.
kitahsushi Guess you've been talking to yourself, since this is some great projectng you do their. So, don't assume others are as useless as you are just because they have a different opinion, since thinking that only your opinion is the one that matters is a good way to get to fascism. So, if I am useless, then you are clearly hurtful to society!

Dafaq is wrong with you people?
I think we're more so wondering what's wrong with you...
right
ikr how can it not
It's so annoying to hear this great message and read the comments to find people only taking about how "Cara brought them here" and other people missing the message entirely...
I was just about to comment that
Thank you.
But she used her celebrity to make people more aware of things like this so what's the point moaning
Stop bitching. No one's missing the message, they came here out of their own free will and are happy that someone - who just happens to be celebrity Cara Delevinge - pointed them in the right direction
Dean Wilson if you can actually read and comprehend things, you'll notice people ARE missing the message
This inspired me to write a written word speech on feminism... their words are so powerful.
Spencer Bender
good argument
Notice how they never said any numbers.
+Simon they used a lot of pathos, that's why it's so deep and real.
I have a one word poem "Toxic"
Central Intelligence Agency C.I.A. the speech is good but they terrible acting plus they didn't wrote that speech. Lmao speech is written by white people

The part about the thrift shopping is so true...about 95% of my wardrobe comes from thrift shops because we can't afford to go to the mall or department stores
Wow. This is incredibly powerful. I'm so impressed by these dauntless girls.
you're right, this is very powerful! So much truth, performed so well, it brought me to tears! thank you for posting it
Mary Murphy Same here! The truth was so wonderful to hear! It made me beyond happy. And you're welcome.
Kelechi Alfred you seriously have wonderful video's. I'm so glad to meet you! I can tell that you are a deep thinker and will be looking forward to seeing your achievements here as well!
Mary Murphy Thank you so much! I'm very honored.
This is powerful 💕
I say they killed it 110% they were so powerful you can hear it in there voices. They mean what they say and I love how they push it to the limit. They could be speaking out for so many people and helping them find there voice. I just wanna thank them for showing their voices!
when everyone comments that theyre here because of cara but you knew this video existed for months now....
So true like cool a model recommended this to ya but if that's all you took from the vid then there's no need to share stupid comments like that!!
+teachmedanceful And what's the point of sharing your comment? hmmm....
+Alex Sabau I can understand what you are saying but lets just be glad that people like Cara are willing to use their power to shed light on important topics. I'm glad that people who otherwise wouldn't have seen this now have and that includes myself.

For any non spoken English people who are fighting to understand everything this 3 incredible girls say:
Here in America and every single state they have a set of standards for every subject, a collection of lessons that the teacher’s required to teach by the end of the term.
Source: LYBIO.net
Somewhere in America schools are promoting self confidence while they whip out their scales and shout out your body fat percentage in class.
This reminds me of a Poem called "Welcome to Society" by Erin Hanson, and it goes like this
"Welcome to society,
We hope you enjoy your stay,
And please feel free to be yourself,
As long as it's in the right way,
Make sure you love your body,
Not too much or we'll tear you down,
We'll bully you for smiling,
And then wonder why you frown,
We'll tell you that you're worthless,
That you shouldn't make a sound,
And then cry with all the others,
As you're buried in the ground,
You can fall in love with anyone,
As long as it's who we choose,
And we'll let you have your opinions,
But please shape them to our views,
Welcome to society,
We promise that we won't deceive,
And one more rule now that you're here,
There's no way you can leave."
Wow, I’ve never heard this one before, thank you
I've never heard of that poem. But its so sad how true it is.
America is a fine country? I wouldn't go that far, but if you believe that then okay!
***** Haha, well, i'd love to ask you a easy question, what country are you from?
The US lol
I have been watching this on repeat non stop
We're all gonna say "wow this is so powerful" and then go back to "normal" and do nothing to keep this alive

Tears in my eyes. One of the most powerful things I have seen in a while.
I constantly come back to this video because it's amazing
I've re watched this video a thousand times and it's still good
You can practically hear the mic drop at the end. These girls are my heroes. I had chills from the beginning and by the end there was a lump in my throat.
These girls are so inspirational. They definitely have a great future ahead of them.
I still get chills during the "bones" lines
I’ve been watch this every year for the last 8 years. It’s 2023 when is the world going to change? 😢
This is but a fraction of the knowledge I live with every day, then a question rises: "What am I gonna do about it?"
No answers come out, and sanity starts to break.
***** Pretty much the only answer I ever come up with. Still, some people I come across are just universal asses and then all of that goes out the window.
Olivia Apollo I won't but I'll still be able to live with it. Lol
poppysfit You are right, but there is more than just American chaos to account for.
Matthew Barnes Agreed. I was speaking from my own experience..which is "American".
This is a nation of contradictions.
no words. just... this. this so much.
Zetsubel No wonder people never take me seriously when I mention that. Which isn't often, but.. yea. They're making people ignorant on purpose, I thought everyone was just stupid ;-;
Where I'm at they are teaching about them in school very heavily, in fact there are whole cbas on them
It has nothing to do with the subject, but probably one of the coolest classes my middle school ever offered was a summer class about the world's most nefarious serial killers. It was all about their crimes and exploring their psyches and trying to figure out the why of it all.
Zetsubel where are you from? that's weird lol. cool tho. but weird :p
I can't believe I haven't seen this before! But I'm so glad Cara shared this! This had such a huge impact on me
Everytime I watch this it makes me tear up. Still relevant.
This needs to be seen by every human on earth
Why? It is just another victimhood narrative where people claim to be interested in changing the world but they just do word games and blame games instead of providing any actual solutions to issues. Nobody has to watch this.
I'm sitting in the living room. Mouth opened in shock and fascination. This is pure gold.
It’s been two years since i first heard this poem. I have yet to make it through it without crying.
I love this, I've watched videos of them speaking before and every time I see a new one I click on it. Happy to see they're getting more attention finally!
Chills man i'm getting chills
no matter how many times I watch this, I still get chills & tears in my eyes.
I very nearly cried when one of my teachers showed us this.
Thank you to these girls who truly understand what this world is doing to us.
Gave me chills.
That fact that this was written 5 years ago and it is all still true is sad ✨
Which part is true?

This is very interesting and passionate and so I have wanted to discuss it. So I scrolled down to the comments but the only thing I found there, was that people were brought here by Cara. And that's OK, but if you don't have anything else to say don't repeat it because you're disabling an intelligent discussion to happen. Don't you get it?
Wow this video needs to go viral !
I hope it doesn't go viral, I am so sick of victim narratives that claim to change the world, but all they do is making people paranoid.
NAZEEM FUCKING CHILLFURROW!
I AM THE THANE OF WHITERUN!
XD
Go live in South Africa or the Middle East for a few years and then talk about Western 'rape culture'.
HeyitsJaz You're not rambling. Perfect answer :)
bee syrup haha thanks
I came here because of Facebook, but that doesn't matter. This gave me chills. I love this more than words could ever explain. Amazing, these girls are why I still have faith that not everyone is a mindless zombie trapped in their own world of social media and world drama. Thank you, whoever you girls are. Thanks, is all I can say in logical wording.
I’ve heard this poem countless times over the years and every time it chokes me up
yes their idiocy also makes me wanna choke myself with a noose
To people who say guns aren't the problem between 2014-2015 over 350,000 people have been killed by guns. Between 1914-2015 3,000 have been killed my terrorists.
I don't know about you but to me those statistics don't add up.
wait, the gun just went off and killed someone? no one pulled the trigger or anything?
You are ridiculous.
+MeilaniDita how is that ridiculous?
I'm asking my English teacher if I can say this at a assembly soon
Yesss
The girl in the middle was on the verge of tears the whole time and it hurts my heart that they didn’t say one lie
this literally made me cry these girls are so wonderful I love it

no matter what country you're from, you can identify with this so much
