Over forty years ago, a brilliant and now disgraced director created a version of MacBeth and there will never be a greater version. It's naturalism, its verisimilitude, its mise en scene, its acting, its cutting, its casting all are marvels of perfection. One of the very few nearly flawless films ever made - and most importantly, a model study of perfect poetic scansion. MacBeth is one of the most mucked up plays, with many many film versions with wonderful actors that butcher the Shakespearean lines in a myriad of horrible ways and with a lot of confusing and lack luster direction. This one gets it so right. Bravo!
This is THE definitive Macbeth. Never equalled, let alone bettered. Francesca Annis was the perfect Lady Macbeth. Beautiful, seductive and feminine and utterly evil. She was utterly believable.
@sha11235 Like all great artists who sublimate their experiences, even, or especially the bad experiences, Polanski did it in his Macbeth. The Manson murders are there of course, but also the experiences of his childhood in wartime occupied Poland. The slaughter of Macduff's wife and children in his version of Macbeth, with the murderous soldiers breaking into a quiet domestic scene and the mother clutching her baby before all are brutally cut down, reminds me of the murder of the Jewish family seen from the opposite side of the street by the Spielmans in The Pianist. The quiet domestic bliss, interrupted by unimaginable horror. Nobody comes close to Polanski in that. The casualness of the violence makes it doubly horrifying.
I can't imagine a better film version of Macbeth ever being made. Throne of Blood is a masterpiece, but is more of a free adaptation than a faithful rendering of Shakespeare, and is missing the single most important element of Shakespeare's work: his language. Polanski's movie has it all--the story, the language, and especially the atmosphere. In fact, the only other film version of any Shakespeare play that approaches the atmospheric intensity of Polanski's Macbeth is Peter Brook's King Lear.
I'd say that out of all Macbeths I have seen, this one is also my favourite one. I'd say it has only one flaw - a flaw repeated by many, many productions - it shows Duncan's murder. It shouldn't have. Shakespeare left it off-stage for a reason. Viewers should not see Macbeth murdering the king, only hear about it - it would change the way we view this character. Also we, as viewers, should be left questioning ourselves - how Macbeth behaved while commiting the deed, and moments after it. Other than that, Polański's reading of this drama is brilliant.
Point well taken, though given that this was Polanski's first film after Sharon Tate's gruesome murder, I'm not surprised he visualized the scene this way.
Agree completely. Especially with this: "I can't imagine a better film version of Macbeth ever being made." Except I don't like Throne Of Blood. **THIS** , **RAN** , Branagh's **HAMLET** , Brooks's **KING LEAR** and Welles's **Othello** are by very, very, very far The Greatest Cinematographic **SHAKESPEAREAN** Adaptations In History. P.S.: **BÉLA TARR** 's (very, very abridged since it lasts only 62 min.) **MACBETH** , made for tv and adapted and directed by him when he was 26, shot on video, released on tv in 1982 and done in only two shots is incredibly *GOOD* and *WORTHY* as well, by the way.
The best version of Macbeth. The three witches bubble, buble toil and trouble, their trickery, Lady Macbeth's evil and equivocation asking the spirits to unsex her, Duncan's innocence and Banquo's heroism all contribute to advance the classic theme of good vs. evil. One of Skaspeare's great introspective tragedies. Taught it in highschool English for many years.
Many people here might not know but, there is an Indian adaptation of Macbeth, which is not bad either, rooted in Indian ethos and sensibilities. Maqbool, a part of Shakespeare Trilogy by Vishal Bhardwaj.
This version and the episode from 1992's Shakespeare: The Animated Tales best capture how I envisioned the story in my mind when I learned about it in high school!
I watched this in my high school English class and was thinking "this is so good! who made this?" Then when the credits rolled and it read "Directed by Roman Polanski", I actually shouted "Oh nooo!"
I saw it in high school in 1987 and I saw Polanski's name and thought, "When did he do this?" I was familiar with his name, but not in the greatest way. And his latest film Pirates had bombed the year before.
@@wasnt_it He drugged and raped a 13 year old. She says it was consensual, but he was in his 40s, so... yeah, the guy is a horrible human being. Another note, his wife was murdered by the Manson family
"In March 1972, during the trial of a fourteen-year-old male accused of the manslaughter of a classmate, the prosecutor referred to A Clockwork Orange, suggesting that the film had a macabre relevance to the case." ; )
The best version of Macbeth! Two people of irresistible outer beauty and inner demons. The amount of evil depicted in this masterpiece is interminable. But, as Dostoevsky said: "Beauty will save the world".

Remember that he made this film after the murder of his pregnant wife Sharon Tate by the Manson Family. You can see the similarities in this film.

IMO, the best Macbeth ever filmed. And one of the top ten movie adaptations of Shakespeare.
This was the best version EVER.

This movie is the worst movie I've ever seen. Fast and Furious and John Wick are way better.
Great Film. Polanki's Macbeth, Welles Macbeth, and Kurosawa's Throne of Blood are the best cinematic adaptions of this play...
They had us watch this in high school in 1986. I have watched it again frequently since. Sheer brilliance.

Yes, Hugh Hefner payed the movie.
