A - for determination
A - for being a quick learner
A - for hardly stalling
A - for not giving up.
Congrats to you for letting her learn and understand what 500hp feels like. I haven't driven a manual car in over a year and it's slowly depressing me .
#SaveTheManuals
Come on over I’ll re-teach you! :)
The one and most important thing that people don't ever mention when driving stick is the importance of identifying the grab point of the clutch and then PAUSING at that grab point to smooth the shifts. The whole thing about "slowly releasing the clutch" is just wrong. To get a car going promptly off the line, you have to release the clutch QUICKLY but PAUSE right at that grab/friction point where the clutch just starts to engage and the car edges forward slightly. That's when you have to PAUSE then slowly ease off the clutch. I wish the person who taught me how to drive stick would have told me this when I learned as releasing the clutch slowly from when it's on the floor will just make everyone waiting behind you pissed off b/c you're taking forever to get the car moving.
Very true
bro amen, the whole release the clutch and press gas at the same time is complete bs. i always ended up reving the engine too much, even tho i pressed the gas as much as lifted the clutch.
Just like you said, the trick is to already give a little bit of gas BEFORE you even lift the clutch. then find the biting point, pause there for 2 seconds and after that you can lift your foot off the clutch.
"you only press the clutch to marry the engine with the transmission" 🤣 Tommy L Garage
Somewhat accurate lol
Lmao
Kudos to Erica for genuinely wanting to learn and persevering! She did well!! And huge kudos to you Tommy for being so generous and chill with your expensive car 🚙
She’s good people !
I needed this. I just bought a 2017 BMW M4 manual an it’s been years since I drove manual
Congratulations! Great choice
I loved....”oh wow....it’s actually doable!” 👍 Good teaching! I remember when I learned to drive a manual transmission way back in the day, my instructor had me watch nothing but his footwork for a good half hour (without even looking up from the passenger seat) before I gave it a try I think that helped a lot to get the rhythm in my brain. 🍻
Before we started I had her watch a few videos too
I don't know why you in American feel it so difficult... here in Europe everyone learns to drive a manual transmission the very first moment he/she drives a car... so we have to learn: steering, keeping distance, braking, not hitting anything, accelerating... using clutch and shifting gears all the same moment... And every 18 year old manages to do it in few half hour practice session.
You are a good teacher. Not putting any pressure or blame on the Driver.
Thanks!
In countries where the majority is manual transmission, driving school cars have all the pedals on the passenger side too so that the instructor is ready to engage/react in event of emergency or if anything goes wrong.
Good job and it's just about patience.
Next time I need to get that pedal :)
When clutch and the throttle meets its go time.!
She did great ‘ cause most of us learn on a old beat up car. She had to learn on a M3.
Love her fett in sandals working the pedals! Very good to put camera on pedals!!
Haha
Great teacher, smart (and cute!) student. Great job you two!
Thanks!
so seamless, keke - Tommy explained it very well. But everyone stalls in the beginning.
Later down the line, your body remembers autonomously.
Tommy is probably thinking, need a good reason to change into a new track clutch.
Haha maybe that was my goal! Lol
wtffff she did sooooo goooooodddddd omg i tore stuff up when i first learned.... took HOURS lolll
She’s a quick learner!
Well done for a first timer. Balancing became easy for me once I started to reverse.
Great job!
Great video for the girls to learn how to drive a stick shift this is one of the easiest cars to learn with Hill assist and stall assist.
Thank you 👍
Ahhh Erika, the perfect student! She picked it up super fast. Nice job with the instructions Tommy 👌
Thanks!! She did great
Nice and calm approach, Tommy! Well done! And she learned fast too, so your clutch is probably still good! 😁
I wouldn't let go of the brake before lifting the clutch, though. Nor would I put it to neutral in traffic lights.
And the cool thing to teach would be the "roaming", when you just lift the clutch so that the revs drop by just a little, and then you can either roam with the clutch or use the gas to accelerate uphill. 😌
Thanks! Why would you not put it in neutral when at a traffic light? S
Brave man
She’s good people
You are brave, I once tough my daughter and I kissed my clutch good bye at the same time.
I kept my eyes on the footwork! Lol
What helped me 20 plus years ago was the concept of a teeter tooter when switching gears. Let off the clutch while giving gas.
Good idea !!
Trust me, those hill starts are scary when you’re a beginner, but thank God for BMW hill assist, you get time to catch it lol
I didn’t want to risk that one. So rental car it is :)
Flashbacks to teaching my daughter to drive manual on my former E36 M3 :-) Tommy you did a good job! The F80 has got to be a tough one to learn on tho - you just can't feel the clutch engage the flywheel through the pedal at all. Even with my CDV removed, and all rev matching coded out, I still have trouble taking off and doing the 1-2 shift smoothly in this car. I've been driving manual BMW's since 1995 and never had this issue before.
You’re right! It’s pretty numb learning on it
Great video it reminds me of my journey when I was learning to drive the stick myself in and since 2014 . Congratulations you did really good. I'm just trying to learn to be a good teacher at teaching someone else how to drive a stick.
You can do it!
The foot wear is important when learning I feel. She did very well.
Lol for sure
Hahaha, that's a cool video, love it!
Thank you and welcome to this side of the world!!!!
Well done. I normally don’t compliment folks but you made it simple for anyone to learn. 🤙
I appreciate that!
🤣🤣, great job Tommy, she makes it look like rocket science.
Haha
you are one brave man! :)
Ehh cars are meant to be shared
I’m making my wife watch this on repeat today 😂
Haha great!
I’am not too sure how the “ I have a stick” and the “keep going, keep going” part would go down with my wife 🤫😹😹
I’m getting PTSD from when I taught my wife watching this video. 😂
Haha
Another great thing about new BMW’s... hill assist!! They hold the car for 3 seconds so you dont roll back.
Took me by surprise when i first experience it. Sometimes its fun to freak ppl out when you roll back a little ;)
True !!!
Lol I love to do this 😜
You have the patience of a saint my friend.
Haha
Everyone needs to learn Driving a Manual some way.
Yes!
Is an M3! I wouldn’t let no one learn on it, RISKY
Ehhh it’s fun to share with friends
I Love Manual Transmissions there very Entertaining❤❤❤❤🚘🚘🚘🚘.
Haha I see what you did there
Always fun 😄 when you see someone else bunny hopping up the road ...
Lol so true
F80 is def one of the easier cars to learn manual in. I also learned to drive manual in an f80
TLG School of driving - send your spouse, save your marriage! Now accepting bookings! 😂
🤣
Hahaha
Whew - my anxiety. Also, f80 is the perfect platform to learn with rev match. Kudos!
Very true!!!
Nice work Professor Tommy
Haha thanks
That car will destroy pretty soon ..”no that’s fine” 😂
Haha
She’s lucky :) i learned to drive stick on a golf mk1 1.6 Diesel 😂
Diesel is awsome to learn on!
Hopefully there is a good public transport where she goes. Automatic transmission cars are not rare in EU anymore whats the worry, buy an automatic
I watched guys/girls in Canada allegedly able to drive the stick shift.....it was sad to watch.
My mate is a mechanic at the dealership and from what he observed if a clutch in a manual makes it to 50 k km, 30 k miles for the less fortunate its a miracle. Normally clutch should last at least 60k-80k miles.
Ok you’re a good instructor
Thank you!
not sure if you guys did this before the video, but it would have helped to do the gear changes first in the parking lot with the engine turned off. You go through the motion of changing gears from 1st to 5 for 10 minutes and it becomes easier when you are driving.
Yes we did this. But I decided to skip it for the video
I was lucky. My father taught me how to drive stick when I was 10 on a little Ford Ranger that 4 wheel drive low. It was almost impossible to stall that thing
Now decades later I’m still driving a stick, but now it’s an M2 Competition
Quite an upgrade there!!!
Lol I remember learning stick. My mom made me start on our inclined driveway because she insane ha
Haha wow
Ciekawy odcinek i pozdrawiam
Dzieki!!!
T,..my hat is off to you as,...I don't know anyone that I'd let them learn to drive a manual transmission in an F80 M3! One thing for sure,...she can tell everyone that she started to learn how to drive a manual car in an ///M3!
This memory will last a lifetime !
@@TommyLGarage ...even longer once she understands the significance of the "F80 ///M3". Check!
the only thing missing is you didn't teach her about the clutch biting point. She could have done it more smoothly on her first try. She is lucky to have a 500 horsepower manual car to practice on. stalling is almost impossible unlike 1.5 liter engine with 95 to 105 hp.
Good point!
F8x was probably the easiest car to drive as manual. Clutch is soft and you can take off without pressing the Gas pedal.
Very true
Great video Tommy
Thanks!
Made me nervous watching! Good stuff haha.
She did well
Using the hand brake is a better learners method for hill start. Not that it matters on the M3 but not all cars out there have hill assist.
True. We didn’t get to that part
Whilst driving I said to my wife "you've been driving my car, haven't you?" She replied "how do you know?" I said "because the clutch is totally shot.' She replied "Well don't blame me, I never use it."
Hahahah
hopefully the ad revenue can pay for a new clutch lol
Haha no way. Clutch is solid
The best anti theft protection in US is to have a car with manual transmission?
True !!
This is awesome!! Great job Rico, ready for Esthpania! Also, am I buggin or is that edytagelmoment on your nails 👀
Wow good eye!
Oooo the famous long lasting manicure??? I must know more!!!
nice girl + nice car , i forgot about what this video is :D
Haha funny

Marry the engine with transmission LOL
True story! Hehe
Where is the link to your driving school. I want to enroll my wife and daughter 🤣
Working on my website lol
You should have been teaching her on the Porsche, LOL

The sign of a man who has decided to sell his car 😂
Wanna buy it?? :)
@@TommyLGarage What would I do with my Jahre? 😇
@@RAElias twins!
fuck that. I would have rented a stick shift car on Turo for the lesson.
But where is the fun in that?!
First of all drive with shoes !!!
Haha
Love the videos, but what is opinion on bmw buying a F80 now
Love them! Want to buy mine?
This is gonna be interesting lol
She did well
Do u still like m performance version 2 steering wheel Tommy
Love it!
Not safe to drive a stick with sandals
true
Aka stock ass m3 with ots tune
Very stock
Your friend is doing really well if that’s the first time she drove a car. By the way she’s cute. Is she single? 😜
I think she might be single indeed hehe
@@TommyLGarage Well you can tell her I’m interested 😁
Should of rented a clunker!
This was more fun
Tommy she should have driven it barefoot
True !
lollll what?!?! that sounds like a awful idea!!
Haha
It's called manual or standard man 🤬
Ok
@@TommyLGarage hahaha gotta love the youtube comments section!
Reminds me of myself when i was taking my first driving lesson. And now,,, i shift like a rally driver and i sometimes do clutch kicks. I have a 150 horsepower 520i
Clutch kicks are next for her!
@@TommyLGarage nice!
I see you could benefit from the Ultimate Clutch Pedal. Major improvement for my M2C!
Ehhh I didn’t line it honestly. Had an opportunity to drive an M3 with it
Tommy, so you can engage and push down on the clutch as hard as you can (relatively), but when you release your foot from the clutch, you want to do it slowly and not in a jerky motion correct? So if you are in 3rd gear and someone cuts you off in a moment's notice, you press down the clutch, then go into Neutral and slowly release the clutch then after you engaged in Neutral correct? I haven't actually driven a manual car since I only own a 2001 BMW 740iA vehicle, but I use the sport transmission quite frequently. I know its not the same, but I am trying to learn this own my own since I want to own a BMW E39 M5 as my weekend-summer type of car that will be garaged only. Great video, thanks Tommy!
Great points!
At exactly 9:56 it seems like the clutch was being realesed pretty smoothly yet why did the car jerk?!
It’s a tricky clutch honestly
@@TommyLGarage what's exactly the right way of releasing the clutch without jerking can you please explain?
What if you need to hold the clutch half way for a long time?
You can’t
@@TommyLGarage how to creep in a manual?
I am distracted by something else
Like what? :)
As cringeworthy as watching guys at the gym that have no place teaching people how to workout...😬😬🤦♂️
Should never keep the car in neutral at stop lights either.
Tell me why
