      Hi. Really sorry for not getting back to you. I was away. I do hope your jam turned out ok. If it didn’t thicken, it could be used as a topping over ice cream or stirred in some yoghurt.

    Love how you show all your ingredients! I didn't know about the bottled lemon juice. Thank you for letting us know. Great way to recycle your apple pieces! Great tip on checking to see if your jam has set. Wow! I didn't realize it would only take 10 minutes to cook the jam! Very much enjoyed full watching your video! like 16 😊🌷🌼

      Alyena’s Kitchen Hi. Thanks for stopping by! It did only take 10 minutes to process but I did have to cook it for 2.5 hours for it to be thick enough to set. 😊

    Next time you do a steam canning video, would you please include demonstrating the jar preheating part? Thanks!

    • @LivingOffTheLand
      @LivingOffTheLand  4 года назад

      DannyH I should have another video in the next week or so that will be steam canning and I will be sure to show how I heat my jars. Thanks for the suggestion! 😊

      @@LivingOffTheLand How about lids? We are reading conflicting reports about the need to sterilize lids before use and handling them prior to canning. Some say that since the 1970s, sterilizing isn’t necessary. Some say that a processing time of 10 minutes or more sterilizing isn’t necessary. BTW-my wife and I are diving deep down the rabbit hole of canning! 😃

    • @LivingOffTheLand
      @LivingOffTheLand  4 года назад

      DannyH oh sterilization is a very interesting discussion for sure. 😉. So what you read about the 10 minute rule is what I use as well. If I do not process for 10 minutes. I sterilize. When I took a class with three master food preservers they said no sterilizing unless less than 10 minutes. I follow that rule. You have to remember that nothing you put in your jar is sterile. The food is not sterile. That is why we steam can and pressure can. To kill any harmful bacteria that could be in the bottle. I just finished filming my next video and I hope it answers your question for how i warm my jars. So this probably answers your question around my relish. My jars are never hot if my food is cold 😊. I think its great to see people getting into home food preservation. What better time to do it when there is talk about food shortage. I have been raising meat chickens now for 5 years and I love being able to feel that I have plenty of food just in case. Have fun and feel free ( you or your wife) to reach out anytime!

    • @LivingOffTheLand
      @LivingOffTheLand  4 года назад

      DannyH And for the lids I always warm them and try not to touch the inside to much. Its not recommended to boil them but I do put in a pot and heat them. I try to keep everything as clean as possible. I really am impressed by how you and your wife are trying to do things right. Keep doing your reseach. A good resource is the National Center for home food preservation. There were alot of things done in the past that are no longer safe. When I am in doubt I always check. I want to keep my food safe. Another thing that is fun is when you can start giving some to friends and family and not worry. 😊
