- Printed by William Caxton, in Bruge, Belgium, the Game and Playe of the Chess was the 2nd book ever printed in the English language (the first was an obscure history of Troy). It was already the most-copied book in Europe, second only to the Bible, originally written in Latin by the Italian Domincan friar, Jacob de Cessolis, around 1275, translated into all of the major European languages. Here, for your enjoyment, a brief review of this historic work. AncientChess.com
