    I found a better variation R, N, B, C, A, K, Q, B, N, R. In this variation there are 3 benefits:
    1. No pawn is unprotected
    2. White can't double attack a Black pawn in their first two moves
    3. The Queen is reunited with her King

      Thanks! And nice that Ed Trice is bringing Gothic Chess back!
      He was out of action for a while -- we'll have a video on that too -- but now we're really trying to connect with the thousands of Gothic fans who are still out there (and get new ones....)

    What software are you using to reproduce the game?

      There is a very useful "chessboard painting tool" found at the following site ... You can use all kinds of icons, beyond the standard ones, and you can define boards of any dimension: musketeerchess.net/tools/boardpainter/

    Nice video. Would be nice to get a reasonably priced 10x8 set with a vinyl board.

      AncientChess - do you sell just the 10x8 vinyl board? I had already bought the chancellor/archbishop plastic piece kit from HOS. They don’t seem to sell a 10x8 board in vinyl.

    Embassy chess, also played on a 10×8 board, also has a setup where every pawn is defended. The difference is simply that Embassy places King on e1 and Chancellor on f1 while for Gothic has positions reversed (Embassy has basically the same setup as Grand, incidentally). I haven't played any of these yet, but I'd be very interested to know from anyone who has which setup plays better, seeing as both correct the undefended pawn issue in Capablanca (and why Trice chose his Ce1 Kf1 rather than Ke1 Cf1).

      I haven't looked into it deeply myself, so I can't compare analysis of which plays best. But I think Ed Trice has done some considerable researching and testing. Did you see this video ...? ruclips.net/video/fa0qxN-5O1w/видео.html

    I like it :) - came here looking out how the good old queen have been moving by one square and now i ask myself is it worth exchanging a queen for a bishop and a councelor or for a rook and an archibishop :) if there are more pieces on the market (on the 8x10 board) then they point weight must be of a less value than the standard 1,3,5,9 weights :)

      Thanks for the good comments. According to Ed's computer analysis, the pieces come out with these values:
      P = 1
      N = 2.5
      B = 3
      R = 4.75
      Archbishop (B+N) = 6.5
      Chancellor (R+N) = 8.25
      Q = 8.75
      ... but as Ed points out again and again, this game is inherently more dynamic than standard chess, so the values of pieces are not so static ... it is frequent in this game to accept a noticeable material loss, for the sake of a more powerful position. You can't just, as often in standard chess, be a pawn or two up, and hope to trade down to a won endgame -- a lot can still happen!

    I am not the one who approves of any modifications of classic chess nor even to like it, but this one I find quite interesting. It seems to me this one will become popular, maybe even in some future become equal to classic chess.

      Thanks for the good comment. I do of course like the many variants, but agree that this one is in a different class, as a realistic further evolution of the game. Send comments any time.
