Great to see new stuff coming!
Thanks for the good comment! It took me quite a while to get this video done. I hope to do many more -- but my time is so easily consumed! Anyway, work on the book has been a long labor of love ... I worked on it with Jean-Louis for 6 years .. and he had already spent 5 years doing most of the research and first (French) edition. Please share it with chess and cultural history buffs you may know! :)
You guys (Cazaux and Knowlton) are so great! Putting so much effort into this!
I can't wait to get the book. I just ordered it!
Thanks for the great comment. I hope this book will be everything you expect and more. For us, this is the book that we wanted to have ... but it wasn't going to exist until we wrote and published it. It's really the best of what we have to offer the chess community
Hi Rick, do you try the newer variants with people with regard to evaluating your opinion of the gameplay etc? With your knowledge I’d like to hear what you think of this one:

It’s available (without rule enforcement yet) at Tabletopia.com
Great video! (From Italy) 👌🏻😉
grazie mille, amico mio amante degli scacchi!
I love stratego
Yes! The book goes into great detail about where Stratego came from ... and the whole family of related games
My brother and I loved it a lot, and when we looked for it, they had changed the dimensions of the board and some of the pieces. Disappointing. Then, I finally found a "50 Year Anniversary" classic edition with the original board and pieces.
Keep up the good work 👍
Thanks Guy! Please share this with other fans -- I think there's going to be a lot of interest once people get the idea of what this book is about
Incredible. This is what I've been waiting for so long... and its beyond my expectations. I can only imagine how much work went into this. Phenomenal. Count me in! and respect to McFarland... when you see that colophon you can expect top quality. and great indexes. Thanks so much to the authors. Ill get right onto it.
Thanks! You are clearly of the same mind as Jean-Louis and me. The fact is, we wanted a book like this too -- and finally, it could only come about if we created it. Yes, it really was a labor of love. Jean-Louis worked on his original French book for 5 years, then he and I took that book and worked another 5 years making this English publication as up-to-date, accurate and good-reading as possible... and yes, then McFarland held it for another year, putting it into their format and going back-and-forth with us over every little detail. I think you'll find it an amazing work -- 400 pages of really packed, painstakingly scrutinized and clearly delivered information. This was our magnum opus -- and yet, just a beginning point for anyone who is set to make further discoveries about the game's amazing legacy. ( aworldofchess.com )
Is hia shatar mentioned in this book?? And I also have interest in Chu-shogi, tenjiku shogi, makadaidai-shogi, tai-shogi,
taikyoku-shogi.
Yes! The book shows how to play
hia shatar, chu shogi,
tenjiku shogi, maka dai dai shogi,
tai shogi ... and several other shogi variants.
For the enormous taikyouku shogi (402 pieces on each side), the book shows the initial arrangement and translates the names of the pieces -- but the game is just too immense for this book to include the reconstructed rules of play. (interested readers are directed to the wikipedia page on that game)
I know these games are very modern but do you think you might do a video on twixt and another on tak.
I would love to -- great games! -- but I find it hard to even find time to make more chess videos, which are my main agenda. Coming soon, more on Gothic Chess
Please do more videos
Great video Rick!
Thanks for the good comment! There's a nice chapter on Timur in our book :)

Great book
Thanks John! I invite anyone who has a few minutes to write a (stellar) review on Amazon. The book has been very well received -- but it's taking a while for chess fans to catch on to what it's about. All good comments are greatly appreciated!
