With Lee's and Mandy's permission, westerners (and non-westerners) need to understand something important about diwaniya (guest room) at 8:20 is that these are places where men meet and socialise every day as Lee said in the video. There is a reason behind the idea of diwaniya (or Meylas in the UAE where I'm from) which I would like to explain to everyone. It is traditional for men, in Arab Gulf region, to follow a strict etiquette when meeting women (such as no use vulgar language, no talking or laughing loudly, no prolonged eye contact, no ranting, and other things). The only time men have a bit of freedom of those formalities is when they meet and socialise with other male friends. Liberalists in the West portray that tradition as a form of sexism, which is laughable! The closest example of that men gathering culture in a country like, say, Australia (a place I lived in for almost two decades) is the local tavern. It is a place where Aussie men meet, drink and chat and rant after working hours before they hit the road home. The only difference is that Aussies don't have that strict etiquette when meeting women. Each culture interprets freedom differently. One more thing, diwaniya culture is not strictly bedouin. All sorts of Arabs have it, be it coastal Arabs, oases Arabs, or high land Arabs. Great work, Lee & Mandy!

I just want to comment to try to explain the co-operative concept. it's very old we had it in Kuwait since the 1960s I think. It's basically the local supermarket in your area, owned by the government, and has its own locally elected board, and its own budget. The locals (of the area) can have a membership, it is more like a loyalty program, you don't pay to get it, you get it only if live in the area. The more you buy from them through the year the more points you get, by the end of the year the board announces the profits they made, and based on it and your buying history you get a cash-back percentage of your purchases. For foreigners, it's a weird concept, but we got used to it a long time ago, and makes sense.
الكويت خليط من شعوب مختلفة هنود فرس عرب من الجزيرة العربية او من العراق وبلاد الشام فطبيعة الاكل الموجود في الفيديو بين هذه البلاد مثل الآش والمتبل والحمص
Harries The white one is ground grain similar to porridge, and yarish the red also grain but with tomatoes and spices very popular dishes in winter to keep you warm.
what a great discover Kuwait is! I also added it to my bucket list ☺ and Khaled seems super nice and friendly 😍About the cooperative: do people pay based on the income or does the cooperative buy a huge amount of food in order to get a good price and then the members of the cooperative can buy a small amount at a good price? Can't wait for your next video 😍
Gloria, thank you so much for your lovely comment, and for your wonderful support! I am so happy that you enjoyed our Kuwait videos as we had such an amazing time there, and wanted to share this fascinating country with our viewers! Khaled is absolutely brilliant, and we were so fortunate to have such an amazing Couchsurfing host. I think the Co-operative makes money from the ground rent on the buildings... I know there's something to do with groceries as well, as the shop assistants would ask if a person had a Co-op card. I'm hoping someone more knowledgeable can tell us more about this excellent system! This was our last Kuwait video... next week it's the first of many videos from our Saudi Arabia series, and we really hope you enjoy them! ~ Mandy 🤗😀
Thank you about me 😊. The cooperative is like a company but it's strictly for Kuwaiti people who live in the same district can be a shareholders, there are many cooperatives, one for every district, it contains a supermarket and other shops. Anybody can buy from any cooperative but gets the benefit only from our cooperative that we have its shares. The price supposed to be less, the yearly benefit might be more than the shares price, some times doubles.
@@Khaled_Alsharaf Thank you, Khaled! I tried to understand the concept of the co-operatives as they sound brilliant, but I couldn't quite grasp the finer points. Thank you again for being such an amazing host and friend! 🙏😁 ~ Mandy
The coops are government run supermarkets with fixed prices. Each person living in the coops district is a shareholder with a shareholder number. Everytime you purchase they ask for your number. At the end of the year profits are shared amongst shareholders (ususlly 5-8% of your total yearly purchase) in cash. Coops also provided free staple foods each month to every household, amounts are based on number of individuals in the household. It covers all your basic food (rice, pasta, chicken, oil, flour, milk, etc). If you have babies also includes baby formula. And finally, shareholders get gifts during celebrations like Ramadan and Eid... usually food baskets or thinks like thermoses/tea pots etc. There is a light competition in which coop has the best gifts. 😅

Yet another entertaining and informative view provided by Khaled for you. Thankfully you guys walk a lot as Khaled's culinary generosity would have you stack on the kgs "thirteen to the dozen". 😂 I found the dychotomy between the subsidised bread and the prices of food in the menu at the end to be strange. Plain bread is so cheap and yet what I would consider more often consumed drinks and dishes to be as expensive as here in Melbourne (Australia).
Hello Mac Cat! Thank you for your wonderful comment... it's always so lovely to hear from you! The prices at the end weren't actually that high when compared to New Zealand restaurants... one of the most expensive dishes at 5KWD = AU$24 or NZ$26, and it would be difficult to find a fancy dish at that price in NZ now! Khaled was an incredible host, and we know just how fortunate we were to meet him! 😀🤗🙏 ~ Mandy

The co-oop or what u can call it the supermarket in each suburb it’s like every district has one of these which has the services for the district such as hair saloon for women’s only , supermarket, barbershop for mens only,Indian restaurant and a random shop also they should have big parking lots and other restaurants. Now each district got 1 of these big building called ( jame’eia - جمعيه) and each block in the district got smaller version which is called ( فرع) meaning (branch) so each branch of the main thing (the jame’eia) has also barber and small convince store and an Indian restaurant and a bakery , by the way the bakery and the Indian restaurant sales food so cheap so everyone can eat and that is a rule in Kuwait to not leave any person hungry . Lastly , all of that branch’s and jame’eia people of the same district on their civil ID if it says that they are in this district they can have a share of the profit each year 6:47
Such an interesting city. Can I ask, you always seem to have a local with you on your videos. I’m guessing it would be quite difficult to travel alone there? Is this gentleman the same guy as you were couch surfing at his home? Or a guide?
Hello Annette, and thank you for taking the time to write such an excellent comment. Kuwait is fascinating, and we were so fortunate to have had such a wonderful Couchsurfing host in Khaled. He went out of his way to make sure we saw as much as possible, and we had a great time with him & learnt so much. That's one of the reasons we love Couchsurfing as the cultural exchange is priceless! We could have travelled on our own in Kuwait but it wouldn't have been the same, as we wouldn't have known much about the culture and food, and the best places to visit. In our Mirror House and Kuwaiti Towers video, we introduced Maged, another very active Couchsurfing host who has an excellent Instagram page & organises loads of great events: ruclips.net/video/d5B2IcjuDxA/видео.html I have to say that the hospitality we received in the Middle East was humbling... such kindness was overwhelming at times! It was similar in the 'stans, Iran & Iraqi Kurdistan... places that have such negative news reports about them, but where we encountered such kindness! ~ Mandy 😁😀

We appreciate your kindness and support more than words can express! 🙏😊 ~ Mandy

I think it's a brilliant idea 💡👏 Thank you for your excellent explanation!
الكويت خليط من شعوب مختلفة هنود فرس عرب من الجزيرة العربية او من العراق وبلاد الشام فطبيعة الاكل الموجود في الفيديو بين هذه البلاد مثل الآش والمتبل والحمص
Thank you so much for sharing this fascinating information. The food in Kuwait was delicious, so many tasty dishes 😁🤗

🙏😁 ~ Mandy
@@FrugalTravellersI

I found the dychotomy between the subsidised bread and the prices of food in the menu at the end to be strange.

Hello David! Thank you for your lovely comment. We had such a wonderful time in Kuwait.
In our Mirror House and Kuwaiti Towers video, we introduced Maged, another very active Couchsurfing host who has an excellent Instagram page & organises loads of great events:
