@@MsPinkwolf See,I had been in Kuwait, from 2019 to August,2021.So,I know what it is like to work in there.I was lucky, because I was not a labourer. My point is,for them,it is really hard. You know why? The employers will put them in trouble.I am afraid, you don't know the whole picture.
It's the same in Afghanistan. 99.9% of the people in Afghanistan are deeply conservative but the BBC always find the ones that believe in Lib Dem values to interview.
sorry but the so called "influencer" woman in a fully ventialted apartment doesn't suffer in this situation, it's the road workers, construction workers, people who pick up the garbage, homeless, people who work in facilities that are surrounded by metal (cuz of the heat it gets up to 80*c) Edit: she killed someone whilst under the influence if drugs and driving, and her family lawyer is claiming she didn’t do it
She was speaking for everyone that lives in Kuwait Mr. I know it all! Unless you live with us, you wouldn’t have a clue what we all go through. So save your theories for the ignorant.
As a Kuwaiti, I do not like how this turned out. BBC should've included other people like Om Naif or at least one labor worker instead of an influencer. Whether it's a municipality worker, a mechanic, or basically anyone else. They could've gone to several organizations that try to change the weather situation in Kuwait on a government level but have no voice. I admit, we are lazy and love our A/C and our cars, and tbh, I am one of them. But that doesn't mean that there isn't anyone trying to change it on a legislative level.
We see her experience- and she is well off imagine the citizens without options. Kuwait will be a ticking threat with planetary hospice as its own future.
@Greg Kanowitz This lady is a precious human. Not only has she proven trees can thrive in her community's desert, she has created a magical spot with shade and cool water to drink, all why using her own money! This is pure love for the planet and she harms no one in the process. She may not be able to solve the world's fossil fuel issues but she has made a magical oasis.... I stumbled across this story. I'm Australian and have enjoyed seeing these desert trees from the other side of the world.
I am Kuwaiti who lives in Kuwait , watching this video made me feel miserable , while the reality is not that tragic! We are privileged to have access to ACs and so and so , I just feel sorry for those who have similar issues but no access to AC or electricity or even water !
You are right. I’m not Kuwaiti but I was born and raised there. And the video is just an over exaggerated version of reality. There are ACs everywhere and you don’t have to pay for them. Kuwait might not be a developed country but everyone is privileged with basic necessities. I’ve never seen anyone living without ac.
@@joaboby2. But that's the point! The more air conditioning you use indoors the hotter it gets outside. As the girl said, it's a vicious circle. As for the lady who planted some trees,, the trees are few and she's keeping them alive with water. Planting millions of trees in the desert without water will be a different story.
Its not about the privilege you have, the issue is exactly that, being closed indoors more and more cause the temperatures are unbearable. I lived in Kuwait i know how hot it gets and i have worked with the military in the middle of the desert at Camp Buehring when i was a contractor there. On many occasions we have measure temperatures that have reached 70 or even 75C. You say its exaggerated cause you are used to the heat and its like a normal thing there but in reality its so hot i dont know how you will put up with it in 20 years
Am moving to Kuwait next month for a nanny job. But I already know, it's going to be hard like it was for me in Oman back in 2016, I started sleeping under my bed because of the heat, the cold tiles helped a lot, my employer was so financially strained and just generally a bad person because the family refused me from using the AC unit in my bedroom, I could have easily died from the heat. At yet another home in Oman, I used to wakeup at 3 in the morning because by 5, it would be too hot to work outside, as a housemaid then. It's her nanny, housemaid, driver and workers who use the bus train or walk to work that are truely affected NOT the employers
I hope you are okay. I’ve heard the hardships that happens over in those areas for migrant workers especially in Saudi Arabia + UAE + Kuwait. I wish you nothing but good luck
The one BBC gave her a 20 second clip in the report because she wore a face-cover. The ultra privilege "influencer" causing the issues gets a complete report about her "difficult life". The white western bias is so evident.
@@Dr.KhizarShabir-dl1ho I wish we can somehow donate or help her somehow. Planting trees is time consuming and can be financially consuming. Such a well-hearted lady ❤️

Did it occur to you that Kuwait, being a small oil rich nation, doesn't really have any poor people that can be interviewed for this? Not saying there is no poverty in the country. Of course there is. The immigrants brought in to do the dirty or menial jobs that locals won't do. The desert nomads outside of the cities. They aren't exactly made accessibly to the BBC.
What about um Naif? She's amazing. But I do agree, wish they filmed some people like construction workers, and people with no cars. This issue affects the most.
All the Kuwaiti citizens are affected by the heat, and people who work in construction zones or trash takers, but after all we are all affected by it. Not more and not less
She was easy to contact, happy to be on the BBC-some nice free publicity, speaks perfect English so its just lazy journalism to feature her-would have been much more challenging to follow a construction worker around. The weather man was informative and the tree planting lady showed some spirit -why isnt the Kuwaiti govt following her lead and planting trees?not like they are broke right?
They used to be called sales people but now have a much fancier name tho the same job.My guess is they dont last long as there is always something newer and shinier to be had.
Its really not fair how people are criticizing the influencer. Shes talking from her own standpoint. She has a mid range mom car and a simple apartment. Shes not that outlandish kind of rich. And as a mother it does concern her that her kids like many other kids in her country are deprived of a normal outdoor life that every kid deserves. Why compare her to the other lady? Both of them have different journeys. The older lady has time and money to plant trees but she has two little kids and a career. Just because she spoke about her own problems does not mean she is inconsiderate of the poor. I find her to be a very genuine and honest person. The issues she is speaking about concern everybody and she herself mentioned she doesnt have money to take vacations to cooler countries in the summer. And you're all painting her like shes some princess. Y'all so bitter.
The ‘influencer’ seems so self-centered and focused on her selfish needs. Kudos to the OLD woman for planting trees and doing something for the environment. 👏👏👏
Don’t like her....she’s not even like proper Arabian imo. Like I’ve never seen a gulf woman with such tattoos it’s kinda weird. And when people call her out for it she gets so salty and defensive...not a good representative for your average Kuwaiti citizen .
The influencer was interviewed because she is more relatable to westerners in terms of language, looks or habits, but apparently, that fired back lol, anyway hats off to the real hero of this story "Om Naief" a real beacon of hope to tackle this problem.
The female pensioner did a great, commendable thing. However don't blame BBC for putting the spotlight on the other lady It's had to relate with someone who is covered head to toe & you can't even see her eyes
What do you really expect from the BBC? They lie about almost everything or tell half truths forcing you to do your own research, so that's why I go straight to the comments without watching the whole thing .
@@notforsale1264 agree, theyre making quite a stir in the comment section and theyll even earn from it. Dont trust news channels like these, theyre basically just giving clues
Both women are important, both points of view are needed. One woman plants trees and urges us to adapt. The young woman warns us that excessive heat is negatively impacting families, and gives us specific examples. Both try to help, in their different ways, based on their life's circumstances. Complaining is good, and is needed, when there is something to complain about, like climate warming. One woman is retired, can make time to plant trees and is willing to sacrifice part of her income to water them. The young woman runs a business from home and raises her young family. From both their perspectives, they offer valuable insight. Complaining about an existing problem is an attempt to sound an alarm. Complaining is necessary, important, high value. We must pay attention when others complain. Don't blame the messenger.
I remember my time in the service, we were stationed in Kuwait for a month and it was incredibly hot even at night. The humidity was almost always above 90% and so it made basic activities incredibly draining even in the early morning hours. This was in 2005, I can't imagine how hot is now with the continuing climate change threat.
Kuwait has an advantage with its heat where most of the time the heat is dry. I dont know how long you experienced the humidity but its really rare to have humid weather in Kuwait. Most of the time its dry
It was in the summer of 2018 that the heatwave in North Africa got so bad even the desert tribes couldn't cope. They live in extreme heat all year round and that was too much even for them.
Not exactly. I was born and raised there. Kuwait is more of like an arid state, except some areas near beach where you experience humid air every now and then. But I’ve also lived in states with humidity of 80-90%. But in Kuwait it’s mostly 30-65%. It’s the UV index and dry heat that makes it warmer.

In Singapore it’s usually 30 degrees, I can’t imagine living here if it gets any higher. My heart really goes out to those living in the Middle East :(
There are places in Qatar where they have air conditioned the outdoors. No joke. The problem is that this type of heat is just dealt with by more air conditioning, which in return uses more energy and can create more pollution. It's a vicious cycle.
Singapore weather is more hot than Kuwait Due to humidity the number the temperature number goes down but the feels like temperature is much higher , in Kuwait it’s mostly dry not humid
Bravo to the lady who planted those trees, she should be an influencer to the people of Kuwait not the so call Instagram influencer showing her and kids lifestyle. GREEN VEGETATION CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE IN KUWAIT.
Yeah just because they can show off more of their physique they become influencers easily, but the woman behind the niqab is working for the temperature and a real influencer but she can't be the spokesperson because the world can't see More of her physique. That's the bitter truth 😥😥

I lived in Kuwait for a bit, and the addiction to air conditioning is both understandable and insane, I think the one example that fully encapsulates the insanity of it all would be the portable outdoor Air conditioners the size of an American fridge used to cool 1-2 outdoor restaurant tables for people who would choose to eat outside. The marina restaurant areas would be full of these running seemingly even when no one is around. The heat is truly unbearable but the methods to escape it seem to spawn from a laissez faire attitude from the excess of fossil fuel energy that provides an insanely low energy prices. I can't help but feel this is born from their own excess and hubris that their oil reserves can sustain this lifestyle. It most certainly can't for the poor working migrants who do not have the luxury to have an air conditioned Apartment or Car.
The city area definitely can do with more trees. I'm perplexed that the lady can do it out of her own pocket, but the Kuwaiti government with all its riches cannot do it.
Unfortunately planting tress is not as simple as you think. Most tress can't survive kuwait soil/weather and those that can such as "Conocarpus" they ruin the infrastructure with their large root but yeah the government can still do a better job
Hmm... I don't get what the "influencer" contributed to this video in showing her perspective on the country's intense heat. If anything, makes her look bad and spoiled. Yes, it's hot because Kuwaitis are enjoying a modern, civilised, concrete jungle in the middle of the scorching desert heat. I mean, kudos to the older woman and the meteorologist for recognising this, acknowledging the problem, and proposing feasible solutions followed by real action and "boots on the ground." Other than that, what I got from the "influencer" was whining about how hot it is, how much she and her family suffer, and how to live your life around this heat crisis by structuring daily necessities, etc. Pathetic and sad, I recommend an additional crisis be recorded for Kuwait to tackle... a detached generation of spoiled brats who want cooler temperatures without having to give up any of their modern-day luxuries or change any of their carbon inducing habits.

You wasted my time with Instagram person that no ones cares about. Don't feel bad for them I feel bad for the people who just have a hard time getting water and cooling off.
The fact that someone who does have a 'comfortable' life is struggling projects the greater struggle of the poor. We have all seen scenes of starvation & humanitarian crisis, we are all desensitized. But seeing 'the rich' struggle... that is new to me.
Most of the citizens here have high income and no taxes at all, and if ur not a citizen, and u don't have any income, by this point u will go back to ur home country.
I live in Saudi Arabia, specifically in Jeddah and if u’ve been there you know how hot it gets during the summer. We can barely have a 5 min walk outdoors and it’s 40 C max. To think that Kuwait literally reaches 50+C is just crazyy. I cant imagine how the workers there are living or those who cant afford a comfortable ventilated living.
I really hope so, but after following the recent news - I did not see any effort from the Kuwait government towards trees project or even a promise with clear schedule .. The excuse will be mostly on finance/funding the project..
Why you used social influencer, rich people, as your protagonist. Their life dont represent major people. It is disgusting. You should use common people.
She does have the resources to leave Kuwait and live somewhere where her kids 'could have the childhood she had, where they can enjoy the outside' as she puts it. She says that she doesn't but if she has dual nationality, which I'll assume she does as her mother is American, the only reason she doesn't do this is because of the luxury job she has. This is a serious issue but I think getting someone with more credibility to come on was necessary
She was happy to be on the BBC,speaks perfect English so they featured her.Agree it would have given a greater insight if a construction worker had been used for e.g but that would have been much more complicated needing permission etc plus it might have been difficult to get a worker to co operate as they would be afraid for their work permit etc etc.
Hello, kuwaiti here. Lived my entire life in kuwait. Nothing worse than going to work while forced to park your car under no shade in this heat. By the time work is done, the inside of the car temperature reaches 60c and no amount of AC helps. Imagine almost every single day getting cooked alive like that. Its inhumane. I despise the idea of leaving home no matter how boring it gets.

I lived in Kuwait for 3 Years, and believe me it is not as bad as people say it is. Even at 53 Degrees, you wouldn't drench in sweat and get dehydrated to your core due to the relatively low humidity. Sure Kuwait is very dry. but it is not as humid as Singapore, Malaysia and other equatorial countries. I think so too, but solar thermal power in particular, where many mirrors are arranged in a way that reflects all the sun's heat into a central tower to heat up some kind of salt which is then used to produce power
There was an Italian farmer in Fresno California in the early 1900's who was faced with a similar heat issue. He started digging underground courtyards with tunnels connecting the spaces. Once he dug down about 30ft he was able to grow trees in the soil. I realize underground tunnels wouldnt be practical for a dense urban city. But, it looks like there is lots of dessert outside the cities that could grow lots of trees and homes underground if they just excavated down far enough. You can build entire homes underground with vent tubes in the ceiling that act as venturi tubes to constantly cycle cool air passively.
If you have a rock climbing gym in your apartment, you’re not struggling. BBC probably couldn’t get government permission to interview real people like laborers.
Me myself as a Kuwaiti woman im really trying to save electricity and using reusable straws instead of plastic ones and tote bags instead of plastic bags. But the problem is the majority of people in Kuwait considering these things as copying foreigners. They are not aware of the things we are doing to our planet and the damages we are causing in the daily. Please be open minded to new ideas that can reduce pollution and global warming because we are literally getting fried alive. If you are not thinking of your self its fine its your body at the end of the day. But please think of the earth that your children will live in. 🌎
Ok great but try and be more impactful there is a lot of ecowashing. Straws aren't part of the bigger problems its to make consumers feel guilty where as the biggest threat to marine life is from fishing nets trawlers so instead buy fish from companies that dont destructively fish. Read more and investigate more you will find out a lot is just fraudulent and fake with covering the really impact full stuff because of monetary benefits.
Kuwait's contribution to the climate crisis is significantly smaller and miniscule when compared to the world powers. In reality, Kuwait is one of the worst countries in the world hit by global warming caused by other countries.
I like that old lady, at least she is doing something to help. If everyone just did a little as she has done, I believe it would make a huge difference.
Yep! I did read that if everyone in the entire world stopped using plastic straws and recycled and used electric cars the big conglomerates would still emit 70% pollution. Madness.

The video says Kuwait gets 100% of its energy source from fossil fuels. They aint helping themselves by not becoming a more green economy. Quite the opposite obviously
Kuwait should be thanking the British for protecting them when Iraq wanted to invade and annex the land. They should also thank the Americans for protecting them from Iraq in 1990s. Now they are lucky they have enough technology, smart people, and money to battle these type of problems. Imagine dealing with this unbearable heat situation while being a part of Iraq and becoming a war zone with no electricity and money?
Really, BBC? You couldn't find someone struggling with heat but a rich "social media influencer"? What about the foreign immigrants who work in construction sites and tea Cafeterias? Om Naief, God bless you ma'am. I hope your words and efforts land on some listening ears in government bureaus.
As an influencer all you are doing is complaining. How about doing what the woman in the desert is doing. Use your "INFLUENCE" to bring more plants, trees and green areas to your city. If Kuwait wants to continue using fossil fuels for their enrichment ,then provide the same for your and the World's Environment.
See this is the problem with global warming. Not that your average country gets 1-2 degrees too hot. But that certain places in the world becomes absolutely unlivable. And then where will people go... To your country.

Well we live in a hot desert climate so from the moment you are born you have to adjust. You can reduce the heat but it will never be to the point of going on a run or biking outside in the middle of the day unless you want to die from a heatstroke or have extreme sun burn.

Why don’t you get the perspective of the labourers who have to face the heat head on rather than a snobby influencer who’s always in AC buildings. Plus Kuwait weather isn’t like this all the time, winter has the best weather and night time isn’t that bad.
In the middle Eastern countries: uae Kuwait qatar Saudi Arabia etc. People have ACs and cars with ACs. You go from you car straight to the AC mall. No one walks anywhere. Most people beep their horn outside the restraunt or shop and the workers come out to take the order. The ones suffering are the labour class who are from South Asian countries. India pakistan Bangladesh Nepal phillipines etc. Its very sad to see construction workers and gardeners outside in 45 C plus heat.

The Story of two women; one is superficial "influencer" complaining about the weather and another brave one making an impact.
Some Influencers are only activist who only complaining without doing anything for change
Exactly.

Where is the water?
There was an Italian farmer in Fresno California in the early 1900's who was faced with a similar heat issue. He started digging underground courtyards with tunnels connecting the spaces. Once he dug down about 30ft he was able to grow trees in the soil. I realize underground tunnels wouldnt be practical for a dense urban city. But, it looks like there is lots of dessert outside the cities that could grow lots of trees and homes underground if they just excavated down far enough. You can build entire homes underground with vent tubes in the ceiling that act as venturi tubes to constantly cycle cool air passively.
