I'm reading a book on modern China by an american author named Evan Osnos, and he writes there that the character wei you showed is how the artist Ai wei wei got his name. I was reading it just today, what a coincidence that I also happened to watch the video!

      1) Hard parts
      A) tones
      B) pronunciation--- certain sounds
      C) some word phrase clause orders

      C) 2) all Adjective Prepositional
Phrases and Adj. Dependent Clauses always precede Nouns,
      opposite of English
      Etc.
      2) Easy parts
      A) NO verb by no. and person
      conjugations!!!
      B) Chinese and English basic word
      orders are same.
Suggestion--- to study a 2nd language or dialect, find each 1 s
reference grammar, on line or book, and compare your native 1st
      and target 2nd as follows
to examine forms, like word phrase clause orders, etc., and contents,
like words meanings both languages, etc
      1) same
      2) similar
      3) opposite
      4) different (extreme ex.--- at
times, 1 language has words to
discuss, but another does not talk about it, s s some websites give ex. that when a Chinese person
really likes another, and feels that
they are hot, they would not tell
that person but continue low keyed friendship, at least at 1st,
or controversy and mystery what if
any exclamations to say after 1 sneezes!?
      Hope that these help.
Zhu ni, hao yunqi!! Jia, you!!!

Also, if you learn other Chinese
dialects, be aware that they at times have different measures
      than "Mandarin" for same Noun.

I have just completed hsk 1 and the similarities between some of the characters was astonishing. I tried and compared some of them though I didn't know the trick as you're teaching. Eg.( 家,买)(写,号)(有,看)(名,岁)(在,住). Though these characters mean different things, their similarities encouraged me to be very particular about each character since a single stroke in a character could mean an entirely new thing. Thanks for this video.

Great video. However, during this International Women's Month, I want to remind you that you consistently used the male family members before the female ones. Not blaming you, I know that's the culture we were all raised in, and it's hard to break free of that conditioning. I'm just mentioning it so that you'll ponder why that is so, and what subliminal message that conveys, however unintented that might be.

    • @ABChinese

Thank you for pointing that out! I try to mix it up in my examples at least, but for this video, it was because the male examples were stronger points for what I was trying to prove... I was even hesitant to include the 姐姐,妹妹 examples because they didn't exactly sound the same

this isn't going to change. it's not supposed to be taken as anywhere near offensive, either. this is just how the world works. there are many other things you can do to solve this, rather than leaving comments on youtube videos without many views. can't you just enjoy the video for what it is?
