I Swapped The £300 Ford Fusion + £250 For This Volvo V70 D5

- I bought a Ford Fusion for just £180 and spend £120 fixing it up. I then swapped it plus £250 for this Volvo V70 D5. Did I get a lemon or something pretty decent?

Oh, and dont know if you noticed, but the black tags sticking out of the back of the rear seats is a load net - pulls out and sticks into the trim pieces in the headliner. They are capable of stopping 300kgs of force so will definitely stop dogs, bricks, luggage or whatever else you're carrying from flying around the car when you stamp the brakes on.
Not bad cars, i am an MOT Tester mechanic for a living and tested many of these and not much goes wrong with them.
I still drive the previous generation V70 - A 2.5 petrol, 1999 on an S plate and it hasn't failed an MOT yet - best car I've ever owned.
@@MalcolmCrabbe 2009 2.0D SE here - I haven't even had an MOT with an advisory on it, absolutely bulletproof.
Great to hear. Getting my v70 from 2003 this week, swapping a mazda 323 :D
2003 V70 2.4t SE here- still on all its original suspension and bushings (115k miles) - only bulbs and filters ever replaced!!
archiemorley45 think my bushes need doing, to be honest - they’re a bit squeaky but no advisories so far.
"Heated side windows" hahaha, no that's the antenna! ;)
🤣 The guy that tinted my windows argued with me regarding that and would not except he was wrong...
Even though its only on one side window.
It's very easy to think that at first glance. It's a very good idea on volvos part though.
I've got the S80 D5 SE Lux (manual) and I love it. The only thing I can fault about it is the CD player which stopped working about six months ago. They're impossible to get hold of. After trying every dealer in the country, all the scrap yards, pleas to in-car-entertainment specialists and even an email to Volvo's head office in Gothenburg, no-one anywhere can help!
@SpaceDoge Thanks for the tip. I'm in the UK so it'll be a long search.. Lol.. ;)
I had a Volvo once, was like driving a sofa, really comfy. Bargain.
i have an s60 on my drive i cant bare to scrap
@@chickennwatermelons1 if you're tempted them at least offer it to the S60 Facebook group!
Not really a bargain with a fucked DPF, and not concourse. Yeah he can fix it for £600, but it's not going to be a genuine DFP.
No, you have got probably the best estate in the land, not only built like a tank but looks great too ! side profile is amazing, mine is a 2005 D5 with 89,000 miles auto, full service history, never let me down after 7 years of ownership, have the usual ECU fault read outs, but nothing else, even the same battery 15 years on ! bought an aftermarket rear spoiler for £95 looks like a T5 now :-) feels like it will go on forever !
I was going to stick a spoiler on it. Makes a big difference for the money. The original battery has only just died on this one too. They seem to last longer in the boot, probably don't get as cold in the winter.
Such cars are not being made anymore, sadly. But nice to see a Volvo on your channel. Greetings from Germany.
Best choose :) definitely worth swap from fusion. Volvo v70 and S80 are very reliable cars. They are comfy and also materials used are top quality. D5 and 2.4 petrol are most reliable engines, everything from that era that has got 5 cylinders can't go wrong if you look after service intervals :) hope you will keep it and bring to shine. Good luck and can't wait to see work done on it !!!
s80 reliable?? kek
@@aleksuks The engine and the manual gearbox will run forever. The suspension will collapse, though. Oh and you will be constantly changing light bulbs.
Nice to see a Volvo on your channel I'm a Volvo driver have been for 20 years my d5 has 330000 at the moment looking forward to see it's progress 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Nice! They do seem to go forever :)
@@TorqueSteer the problem most have is the pre dpf d5s cream interior any guides on getting it clean and respectable would be greatly appreciated by the community that own these amazing cars I can't wait to see you work your magic on it I will share this with the Volvo pages I'm a member of there is a massive following for these cars in the d5 bracket and we are all willing to help and share experiences 😁😁
@@DjbiggieD666 AM Details APC plus AutoGlym magic erasers. No hard scrubbing, just gentle rubbing. Wipe off with a damp clean cloth. The cream interiors will come up brilliant.

I'm lucky I have black leather interior in my s60. I use baby wipes for cleaning inside
Great car you have there,I have a 2001 v70 ,manual, £230 off Ebay,156,000 miles ,full Volvo service history when I bought it.
Same colour interior, it comes up really well ,the paint is really good so it will take a good machine polish and really shine.
Read the owners hand book ,there are quirky things you will never find in other cars.
Load space is huge, I folded the seats down and fitted a cross trainer in the back of mine, and still had space for weights and barbells.
Enjoy it drive ,it will be hard to part with.
Wow! A real bargain. How come it was so cheap?
@@TorqueSteer The bloke I bought it off bought it at auction for body panel spares but the gray was darker than his car so he just wanted rid of it.
Probably the best car show on RUclips at present. Loving the content.
Thank you so much :)
My 2004 V70 D5 has just ticked onto 430,000 miles and still going strong. No DPF fitted to the earlier euro 3 D5 engines (euro 3 engine have a black engine cover).
I picked up a Volvo S60 d5 yesterday. Didn’t realise how good these cars are! Loving the videos 👌
Great buy Luke. Had a 2001 2.4l petrol one then swapped it in 2004 for a manual XC90 D5 and only let it go in 2018 (probable block crack - exhaust gases in coolant). 200k miles, about 50k pulling a dirty great twin axle caravan around the country. Most comfortable, capable, versatile and safe cars you will ever own. Keep it.
They do seem to be the complete package :)
Nice car. I think that you'll end up liking it so much and will find it so useful that you won't want to get rid of it in a hurry. I speak as someone who has owned a 1990 740 estate for 17 years :)
I must admit, it’s quite tempting even in it’s dirty state. I suppose I’ll have to see how it drives.
@@TorqueSteer I'm told by people who have owned and driven them that the D5 goes very well indeed. I wouldn't know, as I have next to no experience of post-2000 Volvos, as I prefer the RWD models.
I have ad an XC70 D5 for a week, 217000 miles! few little jobs need doing but it's a really nice place to be! and the power from that 5 pot is great.
Welcome to the Volvo club :) I think you've found yourself a keeper
Brilliant !! A solid D5 Volvo. I love mine best car I ever owned. You have a true bargain there and we all keen to see you work your magic on it. you may even be tempted to keep it afterwards?
Hi Luke. I recently replaced a 2002 Mitsubishi Pajero I owned for 15 years with a 2007 Volvo V70. Most secondhand cars both Japanese and European in New Zealand dealer yards are Japanese secondhand imports. I sold the Pajero not to a dealer for $13,000.00 (6,4000 pounds) and paid $7,000.0 (3,500 pounds) to a dealer for the V70. While the vehicles are not directly comparable I got a newer car with under half the k’s (180k to 84K) in superior condition for little more than half the price.
The V70 is immaculate, the quality of the paintwork is unbelievable, it is very smooth and quiet (which the Pajero wasn’t) very comfortable and very roomy. Mine has a 2.4 petrol non turbo engine while the car is not a rocket ship performance is adequate. My wife is amazed at the quality of the car and how comfortable it is. Being a Japanese import it has a few Japanese quirks like a Japanese GPS that pops out of the dash and speaks to me in Japanese and there is a ‘box’ above the left rear wheel arch that does….. I don’t know what it does.
Yes the turning lock is not great but I would never have noticed had you not pointed it out. Rear seat room, you must drive with the front seat a long way back. I’m six foot or thereabouts and there is more than adequate room for rear seat passengers. Leather seats - in NZ (and Japan) the sun is very harsh and leather will turn to cardboard if it is not treated with a leather conditioner regularly. I know as the Pajero’s leather seats due to my neglect are in poor condition. I have dosed the seats with Auto Glym leather balm in an effort to keep the seat leather soft.
I feel as though I am driving an immaculate luxury car and for a 15 year old car that is quite something. I think the decision to buy a Volvo V70 has been an inspired one.
I've got 160,000 on my 2006 S60 (saloon version of this car). 5cyl petrol version, left hand drive. Second one I've had. Bullet proof cars. Love them!
The filament in the side windows is for the radio I think
My Dads got one in metallic aubergine. It's a peach. Hard to kill and well built.
You will need patience if the rear bulbs blow they are entertaining to change.
You will enjoy.
Really looking forward to this.. Loads of profit left in that! keep the uploads coming now that were on lockdown haha.. Plenty of time now 😂
I've got a 2003 V70 D5 Euro3 (The best because no DPF and swirl flaps to go wrong like the later Euro4 V70's!) Mines manual as the Aisian warner autoboxes are ticking timebombs without an oil flush every 80K miles! And mines got 242K miles on it, I won it on Ebay for £510 3 years ago with stacks of receipts with it (Clutch, DMF, Intercooler, Rebuilt injectors etc, I get 53 MPG on a run with it, It's sailed through 2 MOT's since i've had it and it's a cracking well built car!
Great to see you wanting to restore and look after a genuine classic. Brilliant cars and bulletproof if they are maintained. Love seeing these on the road, so much car for no money
I've a V70 D5 at the moment and the drivers seat is comfier than my armchair. Just spent £900 getting it through the MOT but worth every penny. It just eats the miles up. It's a great tool, as was my 960 estate was (the four pot engine is bomb proof).
Its so nice to work somewhere where you are going to be alone and can leave your tools outside without having to worry about that they will get stolen
It makes all the difference. I feel like this video is already 10x better than what I've posted because of a good work space. Jobs typically take a lot longer too when you're filming so stuff is left around longer.
I have a 20 year old petrol 2.4 turbo version of this car. Currently on 155000 miles. I give her an oil change every 5000 miles, and she drives like a brand new car! Passed the last two MOT inspections with no advisories... Absolutely the best car I've ever owned!! 😍
He reminds me of the character on the cover of goosebumps book camp Jelly jam when I was a kid. Also I think this is the first time I've seen this channel and I'm very impressed with the depth and detail in this review and its a Volvo win win
Not usually a fan of such big cars but that's a great motor. Lovely interior makes a nice change from black even if it's less practical. Looking forward to seeing how you improve it over the coming vlogs 😃
The interior will be satisfying to clean :)
That’s awesome, so much car for the money.
Im 6ft, my dad was 6ft2, spent 8 years of my life in the backseat behind him. Never had an issue with leg room, so it's interesting to hear your views on it. Excellent cars though, truly. 8 years and 150k miles and it only ever ate consumables.
That must be terrible life. I'm sorry about you. You are free now? :D
@@Lordosvk Been free for 5 years, thankfully. Truly blessed haha.
Absolute work horse! I ran a 300,000 miler a few years back and it took an absolute battering. Great motors.
Luke, there is a big following for Volvo so I think the videos you do on her should attract more attention.
Keep it up and the work you put it will show it as a stonking bargain.
I watched the interior detail first and you did an awesome job.
Look forward to you other vids to come :-) 👍🙏🤝
If i'm not mistaken you also might have a rather rare Premium music package. Check for amp under drivers seart or passengers seat and take note of what color is the sticker on it. If it's yellow then it's Premium, if it's blue then it's High Performance. Also you can check for the center speaker which where navigation screen is (right above the radio unit).
I've had 2 S60 D5's now. 2004 and a 2008. Just swapped the 08 for a 07 V70 D5. Really nice cars and reliable af.
I drive a s60 D5 from 2002. Also in that time the memory seats will adjust automatically to the key. Impressive. :)
Tailgate spoilers look great on these P2s.
I own a 08 plate XC70. Best car I've ever had. I'm sure you'll have many miles enjoyable motoring in your V70.
As a Volvo enthusiast of young age (60) I feel you did well getting it for that price. Obviously you will save on labour costs because you can detail it your good self superbly and get persons to appreciate the new look and create the sale that way, but parts for DPF etc. could be expensive, so good luck with that. A 6sp manual should fetch 2000 easily......
Always loved the understated but elegant styling of the P2 Volvos. You're pretty lucky too - the SE trim comes with the sport bucket seats from the R models.
Decent cars these, very solid and not much really goes wrong. My last D5 had over 200k miles when I sold it and still drove nicely.
The only thing that I have found to compare those front doors to is a 1983 Mercedes 380SE. I've had a gas 2.4L T5 since November of 2015 and it's by far the most reliable (and fastest, and smoothest) car we've ever had. I've actually gotten bored and decided to replaced just about every wear item under the hood and behind the wheels, along with putting a larger intercooler in it. Hopefully I'll be able to see it to another 14 years on the road.
thats a great buy Luke ,well done, and i am sure you will still be in pocket after the work needed .
Solid cars, I have a 03 Euro 3 S60 2.4 D5 SE Manual (163hp), pretty much same car, I love them built like tanks, interior is same as yours but all mine is black leather, I agree seats are so comfy, I have done decat, egr delete, ram air cone filter, and made my own custom 3inch straight through exhaust and sounds incredible, quick cars as standard will be getting it remapped in the new year. Mine also has exact same wheels nice as standard. Have fun with yours! Merry Christmas too! 👍
Beautiful and well clean inside and out..
I just bought one out a dude in Basingstoke..
I Regretted so badly, the interior is so tired and worn even the 2 front seats 💺 are horrible 😫
Very bad deal.. No MOT, No brakes.. paid 400 quid
I already spend £110 at front brakes
Nice car mate! My dad used to own one to (2007, 2.4i). My aunt boght it from him and owns it to this day. The car now has around 350‘000 km on it and has no issues at all. By the way, the stuff on the rear side windows is the radio antenna and not heating.
Sherman tank of the car world there Luke, you got a good bargain that will easily do 400,000 plus miles.
Great car there. Definitely a good deal. Really enjoy watching these videos and seeing how you turn these cars round.
Funny youtube recommends me this now.
Got a 2006 V70 D5 in february myself, even with the 513.000km it has it drives like new :)
These have actually increased in value from 6 months ago
I do remember them being cheaper when I looked at them a while back. They seem to draw good money now.
@@TorqueSteer people have clocked on to how solid they are!
Been subscribed since about 166 subs mate ! Lovely channel
Thanks for being along for the ride :)
Great car for the money. I have a V70 D5 with 232k miles, runs absolutely perfect. Ideal long-distance car. Massive boot too, put the seats down and you can sleep in the back!
Great video looks like a nice car I think you got a good deal. Nice to see you are well . Keep safe mate
Luke, great buy. Been trying to get a cheap one of these for ages. What about doing a bit of research and then a detailed video as a sort of "buyers guide". Show what are common problems, what to look out for when buying one. Which engine is best and most reliable. How much it costs to fix common issues. etc etc
Great idea. It might be worth doing if I learn enough about them.
Love these soap-bar Volvos. What a steal, and in excellent spec too. Keep these alive.
Hi Luke, great video, you have done well in buying this Volvo, for the money it's clean and paint is good, and it's got miles to go yet.
Thanks Steven. To be honest, this one feels like a keeper.
My dad used to have a 2002 V70 2.4t manual, it was a great car we absolutely loved it. There was nothing better you could of brought with the price you brought it for 👍
I live in America and have a 2004 s60 . Of course it’s not a diesel or manual , and the steering wheel is in the proper spot lol . Great cars ! Achilles heal is the aisin transmission. Frequent fluid changes or it will be in the bone yard by 150,000 miles .
I bought volvo xc90 2006. all fine but there is some downsides! Abs, anti skid warning light went on, cd charger not working, alar syster service light. other than that is fine, all fine. very solid and nice to drive. fuel consuption is 6.9 liter per 100kms. Its manual sfifter
Absolutely superb car...what a bargain! I have 2005 model and would not sell it. Amazing build quality and there is not one fault. I feel lucky to own one... if I had more space I would buy another. Great video
this guy are lie man , its not 2007, just look sterring
i wouldn't even bat an eye doing a swap like this, I like the move you made, welcome to the Volvo community mate
Thanks dude :)
By the way not only you have store under the floor at the trunk, but also space at both sides. My father used to have stuff there also.
You absolute beauty! I've had three of these exact cars! Without a doubt one of the smoothest rides at speed and rows literally anything you can think off!
Brilliant buy!!
Edit: My advice would be to get yourself the roof bars and a cheap high vis vest. I've never had anyone infront of me in the right hand lane on a motorway 😂
Haha I love that idea. I can knock 10 mins off my morning commute.
Great buy mate, I'm looking forward to seeing you clean her up. I've a 03 V70, beautiful motor. Hope you enjoy
You should get the aluminium trim going on in the interior, it'll look boss.
I used to have it in that exact spec. amazing car.
Great quality content kid 👍
Absolutely love the car. Bought a volvo 940 Estate 2.3 lpt a while ago. Haven't picked it up yet but i already absolutely love it. A volvo is always a great purchase
Ooh, classic ! :) Proof they keep going!
I had a later shape V70 (not as good as the car in this review imo) after owning an 850 -fantastic cars with sweat 5pot 2.5, then an Audi A4, merc e320, Aclass, A3... now I have an 05xc70 so same as this essentially but wider track to clear local speed bumps and can honestly say this is the best all round car I have had... very satisfying ownership and better than the later model in terms of build, I look forward to the follow up videos and think you did very well for the money
I have a Volvo C30 and it seems to be a theme across Volvo's to have heavy solid doors like tanks even down to the smallest models.
Fantastic video as always Luke keep up the great work and most of all keep safe
Not heated side windows mate. Do you see an aerial for your radio?? They incorporated it into the windows 👍👍
I've wanted to upgrade my 2002 V40 to a V70, can't believe you got one for £550!
Oh I'd definitely recommend grabbing one of the underfloor subwoofers if you can, they make quite a decent difference!
Yes, Luke! Welcome to the Volvo club! Looking forward to a few good vids on this beast.
Thanks for welcoming me to the club :)
Nice video.
Old Volvo, Mercedes and bigger honda estates proved that the needed form factor is near to the blocky side with a 90 degrees tailgate.
You need to check out a V70R or at least a 2.5T.
Also an XC variant can be almost the same but still totaly different ;)
Nice car this. Just picked up a Saab 9-3 convertible for £1000. Hope to review it soon. Something to be said about the swedes, its like driving around in a lounge.
love my d5 v70 i'm looking to downsize though it's costing a bomb in fuel around £280 a month I look at other stuff but can't help looking at smaller volvos they're just so solid and that safety aspect esps when you have a family is reassuring.
I had a 2008 2.4d polestar(205hp and 450nm)really nice car.
Nice I have s60 d5 look after them and don't skimp on oil and filters and they look after you. I use 0/30 Petronas in mine. Lots of little mods you can do to make them better. Meyle HD drop links. Adjuster for the rear brakes. And poly Bush inserts for the subframe bushes. I plan on keeping hold of mine best car ive had. You're dpf should clear after a thrash in 4th on the motorway 😏.
Looking forward to seeing this bought back to excellent standards! Got yourself a good motor there Luke.
I bought a 2002 S60 2.4turbo petrol 3 years ago with 111k on for 1K as a stop gap while getting out of debt and In need of a bigger car. It's just turned over to 130k last week and I've never had a issue with it. I even now find myself updating the look of it with parts off a 2006 model to stop it looking so dated and can see myself owning it for a few more years
I've been thinking about getting one of these for a while, I've always liked the styling, the build quality and it's easy to stick my bike in the back. Having said that it makes no sense whatsoever because I live in a city and most of my driving is a mile to the shop and back...
If you will get one of those you will want to drive a lot more because the car is just that good. If you'll get one in good condition that is.
I have one and I really love it.
Look forward to the detailing video of that old beast! Nice buy 👍
The stripes in the back windows are not heaters - their antennas for the keyfob and (iirc) FM.
Awesome video and really a bargain. I have one myself, 2007 model with what atleast in sweden is called "CLASSIC MOMENTUM", basically a medium spec of the last modelyear for that particular bodystyle. It has around 202k miles, it's the smaller 2.4d 163hp version but it pulls almost just as strong as the d5. Mine's an 6spd auto though. I think your's would be the "summum" package in sweden. Awesome cars and really comfortable
Excellent Buy Luke, I’m looking forward to the detail.
Very very nice Volvo, would make a great mobile detailing vehicle with all that space!
08:58 when the long term effects of social distancing kick in
I had a 2003 D5 for 6 years and 158.000 best car I ever had. I would be interested in buying this should it be for sale?
I might keep it at the moment haha. It's had LOADS done to it.
Great vid, super car it’s a keeper
Very good buy man, yes it would have been better with an auto box but for that price, you can't be picky! I am looking forward to a very satisfying interior clean on this, it will definitely be one to soothe some OCD!!
Stay safe dude and sanitize that car...
Haha, I'm gonna go full blitz on it.
I believe the V70 and S80 are two of the best and most economical cars to own. Don't buy one later than 2006 though! I have driven S80's for 15 years and my TOTAL capital outlay has been £5,000 in all that time. Repair costs £0.00. My last S80 did 60mpg at an average of 60mph - in Wales!
I just got hold of a V70 with over 345k km, a relay and mirror replacement and it's legal.
Great car - what's the latest year you can get a diesel without the DPF please? Thanks.
I’ve had similar problems, 3rd gear and hold throttle down for a few miles and it may heat up enough to clean the dpf.
Used to run mine down the motorway in 3rd for a few junctions once a month once she was at temperature.
Never did the engine any harm and she used to run 2/3 mpgs higher for the next few weeks.
DonMorte2 exact same bud !
I have one of these. It’s fabulous. Had 11 Volvos too...
yep ..thats a step up from a ford fusion...must be 2 steps up...volvo my favourite xc 70 ..but just a tiny bit too expensive for me in monthly costs here in the netherlands..in taxes as well as in petrol costs...but they last a lifetime when taken care of..pure quality automobiles
We had an old XC90 for about 4 years............wonderful barges! Beware of the steering rack....I know you're only going to flip this car, but we replaced ours with a non-OEM one and it lasted 13 months......one month out of warranty and it failed! Second time we got a legit Volvo one....almost twice the price, but lasted until we sold the car. Looking forward to more updates :)
Thanks for the advice Paul, I want to make sure that it's not going to fail. I think I'd rather trust the original rack that's stopped leaking than a cheap aftermarket one.
Have a engine tuned S80 2.5T. Its like driving a couch with rocket engine. Comfy and insane fast. 😀
If the regen doesn't work, have you ever tried terraclean to declog the DPF ?
Great video hope you keeping well Luke.
