    Jamie McMurray is one of my all-time favorite drivers. For a driver that isn't anywhere in the conversation of being an all-time great, he made the most of his career with some of the biggest marquee wins. A Daytona 500, Brickyard, and All-Star winner and was always a threat at super speedways. He was never a champion, but he has some of the top trophies a stock car driver could ever hope for. An enigma of a driver, but that's why I love him so much.

  • @COCarDude
    @COCarDude 2 года назад +6

    Still love most of the #26 paint schemes, especially the Crown Royal schemes

  • @SiVlog1989
    @SiVlog1989 2 года назад +16

    In some ways, Jamie McMurray reminds me of one of Austria's most successful F1 drivers, Gerhard Berger. He was another Chaotic Good sort of driver, too inconsistent to compete for a championship, but on his day, he was unbeatable (indeed, his final win in Germany 1997 is a case in point. His first race back after illness and the death of his father, he talked about some mysterious power that affected him that weekend, enabling him to perform far better than even he expected. The result was pole position, fastest lap and race win)

    • @jt-hb8lh
      @jt-hb8lh 2 года назад

      Eh I wouldn't exactly compare him with Burger. He did beat senna in 92 if I remember correctly and he was quite consistent.

    • @SiVlog1989
      @SiVlog1989 2 года назад +2

      @@jt-hb8lh well, Senna beat Berger to only 4th in the 1992 F1 standings by a point and all of his wins at McLaren were either Senna letting him win (Japan 1991, when Senna had sealed his third and final title) or with Senna and Mansell retiring from races when they were ahead of him (Canada and Australia 1992). It would be unfair to say all his wins were like that, he dominated the Australian Grand Prix in 1987 for example, despite the fact that the underside of his car looked like it was about the combust. He admitted that he struggled at McLaren, going from a Ferrari that had a paddle shift transmission to a McLaren that not only was too small for his lanky frame, but had a manual transmission as well, which he had to get used to again.
      Like McMurray, he did have moments of mostly being an unremarkable driver, like the race after his final win, Hungary, he was in the lower midfield and was running a lap adrift of long time race leader Damon Hill.
      He was seen as a light hearted practical joker, getting Ayrton Senna to relax, enjoy things that weren't racing, inadvertently enabling Senna to be even better (and even after they went to separate teams, he still went to Berger for advice)

      At the end of his career he won 4 superspeedways: Daytona 500, the Pepsi 400, and Talladega twice. Also won the Brickyard 400 and won twice at Charlotte one of those being his 2nd cup start ever. That's damn good for a driver never really seen as a championship contender.

    2006 Bad Season > 2018 Bad Season. I would believe his 2011 season will be smack dab in the middle. High expectations from 2010 fell flat & the Joplin Tornado added more heartbreak.

    In my opinion, I think Jamie McMurray was one of the unluckiest NASCAR drivers out there
    He certainly did have talent but outside of his time at Roush with good equipment, he was never able to showcase his full talent cause he spent the majority of his Cup career with Chip Ganassi Racing and did the best he could with the team

  • @Dat-Mudkip
    @Dat-Mudkip 2 года назад +2

    McMurray was such an odd driver. He could be extremely competitive one month, then a backmarker the next. There's no doubt that he was able to get a car home, which likely helped him stay in NASCAR for as long as he did. They say that some people have either bad luck or no luck at all; McMurray fell into the "no luck at all" most of the time; he was just kind of there. That's _not_ a bad thing.

    • @evanwilliams6406
      @evanwilliams6406 2 года назад +1

      At least he could finish and bring a car home which is something certain drivers these days can't do.

  • @Cynon
    @Cynon 2 года назад

    McMurray's Roush tenure was mystifying, he was almost outside the top 35 in owner points by Martinsville in 06, I think.
    1:45 I forgot that, and in hindsight that's pretty funny.

  • @alextriplett9414
    @alextriplett9414 2 года назад

    The thing about Jamie McMurray is that either he was really consistent but could never win, like 2004 and 05. Or he would win races but be extremely inconsistent like 2010, reminder he only had eight top 10 that season, I think if he could have just pulled it all together he would have had a much stronger career and probably even more opportunities with better teams than chip ganassi racing.

  • @evanwilliams6406
    @evanwilliams6406 2 года назад +4

    I never liked this pairing, I wish Jamie drove the 2 instead of Kurt Busch. At Roush, Jamie could never get ahold of things and his structure never fit Jamie's style, it was a round peg trying to fit into a square hole. That's why he fit so well at Ganassi, once he finally got back there 2010, he had a Dale Jarrett 1996 season, just not as high in points and Jamie won the fall Charlotte race as opposed to the Coke 600. Jamie was always a guy I liked that I wished could have had a better career, very inconsistent but he was unstoppable when he was on and a fire seemed to be lit under him when was at Ganassi both times and you could see it when he came back, he made Martin Truex Jr. look pretty bad in comparison at the time.
