Last month, in a state-televised documentary, Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed argued that Red Sea was Ethiopia's "natural boundary," and that they needed a port on the Sea to break out of their geographical prison. In this video, we explore why Ethiopia cares so much about a port on the sea, and whether this could start yet another war.

First of all, Galla is an offensive term. Secondly, why would Oromo be the only ones recruited when for hundreds of years been oppressed and Abiy's treatment of them wasn't much different. As Somali, if Ethiopia attempts to go war with Somalia 🇸🇴, well then the consequences will be unbearable. It’s an excuse for us to liberate our Somali Region occupied by Ethiopia.
Exactly, they believe that taking Somalia will be simple, even during the weakest that Somalia was in the civil war America couldn't even establish control. Clans have stockpiled weapons since the civil war has died down, attacking Somalia is the best way to create unity, because most major Somali Clans will be targeted, and defending each other to defend our own land has always been the worst thing invaders can do. This news is totally wrong. Please stop listening and believing people who wants to spark a conflict between our nation.
I am Ethiopian living in Addis Ababa. I have been following this story attentively.
Dr. Abiy never talked about a war or a conflict with Eritrea. He said "we should always try to get an access to the redsea through negotiation. However, if we fail to achieve that, maybe in the future our children will". And he proceeded to list all the possible negotiation deals Ethiopia can offer which would be even more lucrative for Eritrea.
Every Ethiopian (with the exception of some people) knows how important Eritreans are to us. And we also know that how an armed conflict with Eritrea devastated our country.
Don't be alarmed by the words of a few treacherous Ethiopian and Eritrean activists and politicians who wants to propagate their anti-peace propaganda.

@@Mick_Unfilteredclearly shows how little you know about Somali people and the politics of tbe region. 30% of Ethiopia is inhabited by Somali people and they are the third largest ethnicity and second kargest region in Ethiopia. Ethiopia already occupies Somali regional state I’m from that regional state and we will fight for our independence our land and people will never be Ethiopian we must fight for independence no sea port or negotiations with Ethiopia until Somali people gain freedom and unity then maybe we can be friends and have open amidst trade runny economy and share the sea port but Ethiopia is goal is annex all of Somali inhabitted territories in Africa and that is such a dangerous evil plan and one that breaks international law
Ethiopia already imports and exports its goods through djibouti as if it were their own port, and it's super secure basically every major military has a base there so they don't need to worry about anyone messing with their cargo.
Edit: I should've watched the video before commenting, as Ben said in the video, Ethiopia's main concern with relying on Djibouti for their trade is that they have basically just 1 road connection to Djibouti, and an enemy could cut that road off. It's interesting that it's just a road, I've studied a decent bit of Ethiopian history (for a white guy in the US), and I recall there at one point being a Djibouti-Addis Ababa railroad and it was quite a big deal. I guess it must've gotten old eventually or something, or maybe damaged in the Italian occuptation during ww2 or something.
Another edit: I looked up the Addis Ababa-Djibouti railroad and apparently the one I was thinking of was built by the French and finished in 1917, but it slowly fell into disrepair and at this point it's almost entirely ceased operations (going off of the wikipedia article which appears to have only been updated in 2018, so by now it may have fully ceased operations) and it was replaced by a new one built by the Ethiopian and Djiboutian governments who mostly contracted 2 Chinese state owned companies to build them, and as of when the wikipedia article had been updated in 2018 it was still having some issues and not transporting that much freight, maybe by now it is but it said the old railroad was outcompeted by road traffic so maybe the road is still used more than the railroad.
Ethiopia doesn't want to pay $1.5 billion/ year in port fees
@realpolitics527 tbh I have no clue if that's a fair price, but I do know everything costs money, including operating a port. If they owned their own port it wouldn't suddenly be free, they'd just be skipping the middle man. And the entire country of djibouti is basically just a glorified port, so any money they get is more or less gonna end up going into said port.
Yeah but we pay too much money for our unstable economic situation(I'm talking about the overrise of life expenses)
One road connects to the port. An enemy would target the road, not the port, and disrupt their trade. Relying on Djibouti also makes Ethiopia vulnerable to Western states who have bases in the area and influence over Djibouti.
@boony7544 good point about the road, I wrote that comment before watching the video, after the video brought that up I do now get the problem. But as far as influence from western nations with bases in Djibouti, I believe Russia and/or China have bases there as well as the US, UK, and I think France, so there's not really any one block of countries with dominance over the area from the military bases. And all of the bases are there primarily to protect trade, so other than the very notable caveat that they have basically only 1 connection to djibouti, their trade through it is very safe, whether from pirates, foreign powers, or just about anything.
Edit: I looked up what countries have bases in Djibouti, and it's the US, China, France, Japan, and Italy, while Germany and Spain have troops hosted in the French base

The peace prize has been a political tool for western countries. They awarded the prize so as to manipulate Abiy to their side and also to sideline it from Eritrea. as an Ethiopian a very harsh skeptic of politicians in general big or small powerful or not people really need to take things into perspective when it comes to our modern politics. it is an objective fact that abiy has done the most for this country's growth by a huge margin compared to any of our previous leaders and so far hasn't made a move that warrants my full opposition, but in recent months has been teetering on the line. and one more additional thing i'd like to point out is that in his speech where he addressed the need for a port while he has stressed the need for sea access he has also (repeatedly) emphasized that Ethiopia is very much more than willing to share assets like the GERD and the massive Ethiopian airlines in exchange for the use of foreign ports. from what I've gleaned so far into abiy's personality as a leader, he is as the video suggested very strong headed on matters of national interest but is also very reluctant to use violence as a solution seeing as how the previous conflict impacted our economy.

Ethiopian president looking at his country on a map: '"I find your lack of ports disturbing."
The two plausible avenues for it are southern Eritrea (roughly its Southern Red Sea Region) and Somaliland. The former because it's a defensible strip of land with a pretty decent port with Assab (which World Port Source labels a "small" port compared to the one is Massawa, a "medium-sized" port), while the latter, as a quasi-sovereign but unrecognized state, would be easier to pick off... And in the aftermath Ethiopia can graciously give Somalia the areas they claim as Kathumo State, while still keeping the port of Berbera, with the rump Somaliland either joining the current Somali Region or possibly expanding into parts of the Somali Region because of historic grazing rights.
Djibouti is very unlikely, mostly because of how Djibouti hosts military bases for great powers such as the US, France, and China, and the nightmare of having to take over these arrangements will be a deterrant.

Our geographic proximity to the sea and near past history are strong natural inputs of mother Ethiopia to access a port!!
If you are referring to the D'mt and Axum kingdoms, then forget about it and move on. Eritrea is an independent sovereign nation now. Not to mention, modern day "Ethiopia" with its current boundaries didn't even exist until fairly recently. Plus, the entire world would be at war, if every nation looked back and tried to rearrange boundaries based on historical claims or their version of it.
Here is a brief history lesson for you: The 1889 Treaty of Uccialli established the boundary between the Empire of Ethiopia and the areas of Eritrea then in Italian possession. To be clear, Ethiopian King Menelik II agreed to the terms which gave Italy sovereignty over Eritrea in return for financial assistance and the unchallenged continuance of his kingship. How is it possible that in 2023, Abiy Ahmed shamelessly claims Ethiopia has a natural right to directly access the Red Sea as if it's a birthright? What kind of arrogance and nonsense is this?

Eritrea even offered its ports free of charge when Ethiopia was suffering from a food crises and needed an urgent shipment of aid. It was the TPLF led Ethiopian government at the time that rejected usage of Eritrean ports as they thought it would cripple Eritrea’s economy. As for Eritrea’s diplomatic reach, has nothing to do with Ethiopia. Eritrea has only had strained relationships with western nations, particularly the U.S., given their interference in the HOA. Don’t even know why that comment was mentioned.
